Yeah, I mentioned it in another thread. The time to launch is terrible, but the overall performance is slow in other areas too. Its basically unusable while its downloading lots of notes, and scanning through notes in a list is slow too. Older notes are really slow to show their contents, sometimes 2 or 3 seconds per note, which adds up if you need to scan through a dozen notes to find the right one. Mine's also a 2017 iPad (Pro) too so maybe that's something to do with it.

FWIW I started a thread on this on Sept 16.

I have exactly the same issue. Seems to work fine speed wise on my 2020 iPhone SE but runs like a dog on my first gen 9.7" iPad pro. Very frustrating. Previous version ran fast and smooth. 😞

Honestly, I would call the iPad version broken at this point in time, having tried working with it normally over the last two days. The performance is so bad it’s unusable, which means Evernote as a platform is difficult since I use iPad so often. We’re talking 2 to 5 second delays simply to show a note when you click on it. It can take 8 to 10 seconds if it’s a note I haven’t opened recently. Another few seconds if you want to edit the note. Opening Evernote and skimming through 3 or 4 notes to find the one I’m looking for and editing it should take a few moments. It’s taking more like 20 to 30 seconds. I’m going to stop using the iPad version for the time being and try and figure out a workaround.

If the iPad app is playing up, remember we can use the web app on iPads now so that might be a very temporary solution? I know that folks are saying speed is improving with updates so hopefully this will be fixed quite soon.

Hey just go to Evernote.com and sign in. Because iPads now use full web pages instead of mobile pages you should have the full web app available, I’m not too sure how great an experience it is but I have been able to navigate it without too many issues.

Hey, you get a nice light show for free, so why speed things up 🥱

It is visible in dark mode only: When I switch to another note on my iPad Pro 10.5, the note screen goes blank. Then it flashes 2 times in white, and then the new note is displayed. It is no problem when switching one note, but it really gets annoying when switching several notes during dark mode.

My support ticket is closed, the issue is known and under investigation. Flash, flash, ... flash, flash ...

Probably we should add some new equipment to our office survival package: Cool sunglasses 😎

I have a 2018 iPad Pro and I am also experiencing these slowness issues. A note-taking app should not be so slow on such a powerful device. I do have a number of notes and I excerpt out of books so some of the notes can contain much text, but the computing power inside a 2018 iPad Pro is enormous.

Combined with other bugs (old and new), I am seriously considering switching to something else which works across iOS and Windows. As best I can tell, Evernote spends most of its developer time on large businesses, and so their concerns matter much more than ours.

I'm on a Ipad Pro 12,9" (1st generation / 2015 model) running IOS14.0.1 and EN10.0.4.  Opening of notes and creating new notes takes about 2 sec. Scrolling through notes is good and smooth. Working online or offline doesn't change this. So it's workable but not as fast as it used to be in previous v8 versions.

Hi All,

I wanted to let you know that I've changed the main topic of this thread.

We do not believe that this issue is specific to iPad, and may affect other iOS devices.

We're further investigating into this issue, and I'll follow-up here once I have more information.

On iOS client 10.0.3 (1104765) (just like in previous 10.x as well) it is very slow to start the client on iPad Pro. It takes some 10 seconds before I'm able to do anything useful. During that time some of the touch gestures tries to go through but not correctly. Basically the current 10.x series has ruined the user experience due to the enormous delays in various places while trying to use the app.

Feel free to like this if you have the same comments, or post constructive hints how to get rid of the problem. Thanks!

The new app has a drawing issue. I am using iPad Pro 12.9" (1st gen) and the sketch function is lagging. I used to write notes without any issue, and now every stroke takes 0.5s to save it seems. I cannot take notes at all and need to resort to other apps...please fix!

Hi @Shane D., can you tell us any positive comments about progress in getting Evernote on iPad back on track and usable? You know, for myself I can say that the power of Evernote has been the direct and easy way to write any kind of memo right on the spot, and this capability has now been taken away abruptly, and this has continued for weeks now. This is not a good situation at all, and I'm sure you know it. It must be tough time to be part of ground-level staff at Evernote right now.

I must also say that I kind of feel personally cheated because just one or two weeks (or so) before this Evernote on iOS catastrophy I was exceptionally targeted with several email and in-app ads about upgrading my Plus subscription to Premium. Supposedly a major campaign just before the rollout of a major rewrite of the app with apparently inadequate testing. Must have been a major misalignment of the resources and situational awareness between marketing and engineering.

Same here. Very disappointing performance on IOS. Sorry to say this to the Evernote Devs, but this release is a catastrophe. It's got a clunky gui and is much slower than previous releases.
Please fix.

I switched to Bear. So far so good! The only flaw is a 'search and go to' a specific section of a long note. The app developers are very receptive to suggestions and indicate it is on the agenda for the future.  And it costs $15.00!

Slow, unusable, not syncing, creating conflicts in notes, iOS 14.1 on iPhone 8 plus. 10.0.4 app ---

the old evernote 8 or whatever worked just fine, was stable, fast and did what it was supposed to, its very disappointing that you subject us paying members to this, these issues should all be worked out before the software is released, very very unprofessional

I just updated and the new version is actually worse on my iPhone 12 Pro. It was bad on the iPad but ok on iPhone before now. Haven’t tried it on the iPad yet. Swiping to edit/delete notes is completely hit and miss, sometimes it doesn’t respond at all. Moving between menus is laggy and opening notes is as bad as it was. It also stutters a lot. The whole thing has this kind of airy imprecise feel and I keep having to swipe or tap multiple times to make things happen. This is just infuriating.

I'm having similar issues, just updated on my iPad and the new user experience is terrible. Slow, laggy, clunky performance when trying to do something as simple as move the note to a different notebook or add a tag. It's like someone specifically tried to make the app into everything I hate.

10.1 is unusable in its current state. I close the App and only the first note I click will open. Any other notes after that will just show up blank. Can't search for anything, add tags or edit any existing note.

UPDATE: Deleting & re-installing the App seems to have fixed this issue.

That is good to know. The current Evernote experience is so poor that it must be sensible, sadly, to find alternatives

I saw no alternative, my EV remains unusable.  To their credit, Evernote issued me a refund for the remainder of my Premium subscription.  I have been an Evernote Premium user since 2013 and really enjoyed and recommended the app despite the price but this was too much.

most of the time I‘m happy with performance on my iPad Pro 12“ 1st gen.

From time to time it‘s getting slow for a few minutes, after re-starting the app or switching back from another App - seems something in background is sometimes consuming brutal CPU power - so, it depends - it still needs improvement.

I find really surprising that someone though that was acceptable to release the new major version in this state.

I use an iPhone XS and an iPad Mini 5, both are powered by the A12 processor that absolutely breezes through every app, other than Evernote. Also use Mac computers that had no issue with the old app. I use Evernote a lot, and the the current state of the app really annoys me throughout the day. The saddest thing was that the only thing I wanted was the old app to be faster, but here we are.

Sorry, but I can’t possible renew if this doesn’t get sorted. Speed is core functionality, probably the most important feature for a note taking app.

Same problem of slowness at launch on my iPhone 8+.   Both the notes take forever to load, and the menu choices in the bottom left will not respond.

Makes Evernote unusable in a classroom situation where I'm doing a screen-mirroring presentation on a large screen.   Same lagging without screen-mirroring as well.  Please fix this!

You know what: I think my 10.1 on iPad Pro works a lot better after uninstalling and reinstalling Evernote the other day. I mean, there are still "10.x" glitches here and there, but the app feels much more responsive now. For example, I was able to open Evernote, swipe from left to get to my shopping list and enter new data there just like earlier with 8.x (or whatever was the version earlier).

Let's see how it goes...

Update: still not able to complete the offline folder downloads though. For example, a 1-note notebook download never completes after editing the only note in it.

I am finding performance of the new iOS app on my iPad Pro and iPhone 7 very slow. it takes about 7-10 seconds to load the app and then it seems to take a further 10-20s to consider it aught to sync. I then find once I have updated a note it takes some mysterious amount of time to sync that, often leading to duplicate and conflicted notes -  Ifind I need to leave the app open on the screen for a minute or two, to be confident it might have sync'd my updates.

Today I've upgraded by accident 🙄 to V10.1 on my iPhone Xs.

I've disabled any offline download due to known issues (stalled downloads).

Starting the App takes about 2 or 3 secs (after force quit).

Surprisingly the App runs without any performance problems so far:

  • switching between Notebooks: quick and smooth
  • scrolling through lists (e. g. 'all notes' view with 6 k notes) and note content: very fast and smooth
  • switching between notes and reminders view: quick and smooth
  • searching by text: very fast
  • searching by a saved search: almost instant results
  • searching by selecting suggested tags: fast refresh of new suggested tags
  • adding tags while writing a note (tag selector): most of the time quick, sometimes a bit lagy (maybe after adding more and more tags - I always have to search for a tag due to long list)

Device is not getting warm.

Maybe that "do not offline download" is a performance workaround? (because there are some issues and device is doing strange things while continously re-trying stalled downloads - don't know, just my 5 cent thoughts).

To summerize after 2 hours of using it: besides missing features and known issues it "feels" pretty good (speedy), UI looks great - a bit surprised to be honest.

My experience has been similar, I also don’t download notes to offline - it’s a mobile so generally always has some form of connection which is enough for me. My app on my phone has always been superb, it’s struggled more on the iPad but it’s come on a lot. Could still be a bit faster but in comparison to other notes apps it’s already generating the notes quicker, just not as quick as I’d like.

IF YOU HAVEN'T UPDATED ALREADY, DON'T DO IT. The new version in Windows 10, iOS, and web browsers is terrible. Worst of all for me, you can no longer search for text in an encrypted note after revealing the encrypted contents. Search overall is also really laggy. And the latest bug I noticed--when using the web interface in Mozilla Firefox as an attempted workaround--is that the web browser search box isn't formatting properly; as you type your query in the search field, the searched-for text moves left, out of view, so it looks like you didn't type the first letter (although if you switch to find and replace, the formatting fixes itself).

I appreciate your summary of using the app.  I too upgraded by accident, and was very unhappy with the app's appearance generally, and still am.

My experience thus far:

  • Making certain notebooks available offline has been amazingly slow, inconsistent, unreliable, and the download speed... it is really horrendous.
  • I suppose it's fair to say I got spoiled by earlier versions of the app being more informative with regard to download progress - up until (i think) 5 years ago, the iOS app would even show the size of each notebook - I found it quite useful.
  • One of the deficits for me, is the lack of an activity indicator showing download activity happening.  Previous versions had the animated "spinning wheel" next to the wifi symbol (upper left hand corner on my phone).
  • But just using the app to scroll through notes/notebooks is really quite fast - I was surprised.
  • Initially, searching by tag in the first version of 10 released was horrendous - often over 10 seconds to get search results using only 1 tag.
  • The UI design is good, generally.

I cannot thank you enough:  I downloaded ver 10 for Windows last week, thinking it would be an improvement.  But it's like regressing to ver 2, or 3, of the Windows client.  No, it's actually worse than that.

If developers or software managers would at least reach out to users via this forum, they would be able to learn what we really want, need, and don't want.  In that sense, we are a great resource that the company chooses to ignore.

Sigh.....

Almost forgot:

In previous versions of EN for iOS, there was a switch under settings to "Sync only on Wi-Fi"

WHY is this not yet in ver 10.x?  Wondered why is was getting "you're nearing your data limit" texts from Verizon.  I have to go into Settings / Evernote / Turn cellular data off.  So it's all or nothing?

As far as functionality goes, I'm really starting to think this version should have never made it past QA, or even Beta...

As you write yourself, the switch is already build into the iOS settings. IMHO it makes no sense to duplicate OS functions in the settings of any app. It is just bad design and can cause conflicts when the OS function gets updated one day.

If I want to stop data transmission briefly, I usually go to the control center and switch into flight mode. This is for sure easier on the iPad than on the iPhone, where it will stop incoming phone calls as well. Luckily I have an Apple Watch cellular, which means that calls come through even if.

⏱️

Open EN, select „scan document“ from the pop up menu beside „new note“

Position camera, wait for green rectangle to show, click

Wait for the picture to appear, hit „save“

New note opens with the scanned picture (1 Page)

⏱️

... 15 seconds total for a one page scan. Ok, now I have to enter a title, tag it, move it to a notebook. But this is my fat finger performance.

NO! This is not a workaround. Why are you even proposing this nonsense? The iOS app needs to be fixed, because Premium users are paying $70/year for an app that works. This one doesn't, but used to. So we're paying for the app to go backwards, not improve.

And in case you don't have an iPad or never used one, most of them only operate off WiFi and do not have a cellular phone connection. Therefore your "workaround" will not work.

The workaround is to FIX.THE.APP.

I agree.  I am a premium paying user and therefore expect the app to work on my preferred devices it previously worked on.  While my phone app and laptop work fine, the iPad is far from acceptable and is my primary tool of choice.  I sent a request to evernote today and have been told due to 'more than expected request' i may not receive a reply for 10-14 days - I wonder if they are all about the ipad issues?

Just spent some more time with 10.2. It pulls up notes faster (initially) for me than the previous 10x versions. After navigating through a handful of regular used notes, the app becomes unresponsive. Still too slow and unresponsive to use.

To put things in perspective, cold starting the Evernote app on my iPad Mini 5 (A12) takes 4sec+ from launch to current note being displayed, more or less the same to create a new note. Running on the same hardware, Bear app cold starts to display current note almost immediately, and you can start writing a new note well under a second.

For a mobile note taking app speed matters, a lot.

It's extremely enervating that Apple and others pour immense resources into creating faster and more power efficient devices, just to have those gains squandered by app developers. Personally, I will "cast my vote" on this matter by refusing to bankroll this behaviour.

Hi All,

I wanted to let you know that I've changed the main topic of this thread.

We do not believe that this issue is specific to iPad, and may affect other iOS devices.

We're further investigating into this issue, and I'll follow-up here once I have more information.

Dear Shane
Is there a solution here?

@Kim L If you want to address somebody directly, write an „@„ followed by the user name (without a blank in between), or send a direct message.

To answer your question, iOS is still on rel. 10.2, so how could anything have changed ?

For me, it works fine on iPhone 11 Pro Max and iPad Pro 10.5, a little slow on the iPhone 6S+ and quite slow on the iPad Air 2. All devices are running iOS 14.3, the 6S and the Air probably not being able to advance any further.

You don’t say what Mac you are using, and which MacOS. I am on BigSur, and everything is working as it should. On the Mac, you can decide to use legacy:

https://help.evernote.com/hc/en-us/articles/360052560314

Remember you are on Basic, so your „large“ notes are punny in relation to some of mine, giving the 25MB cap for Basic. If it is not working, maybe you have a conflict with the note size limit. Can easily be reached when talking about photos.

@PinkElephant

Thank you for notifying me, I apparently have two users . Kim L basic and Premium.

Both iOS 14.2(iPhone 8)  and OS X running catalina (mBP unibody 2016) is slow.
The error occurred when the new update of evernote (new GUI) arrived.

Some notes won't even load, and crashes the app. Maybe these are some of my larger notes. Any ideas of how to access them, and make them smaller ?

Thanks for your tips using legacy on Mac, but my main usage is on the phone. writing quick notes and snapping pictures - which is impossible as of now.

Anyways this is an app specific problem, and occurred only after this recent update - have tried uninstalling and installing. updating OS etc.

is there any news on anybody researching this  ? Otherwise I need to change to another note system.

I recently upgraded to a new iPhone 12 Pro and have to say, well, all performance issues are gone 🙂 to be honest, my iPhone Xs was already a pretty fast device, but 12 Pro is different - there is absolutely no lag no nothing - BUT, I don't want to say, solve these issues by buying new hardware...

Good to hear that performance issues in principle could be solved.

But I would rather prefer a modern Evernote version  - as a web service... - wich would work sufficiently and fast even if you have non high tech devices, which needn‘t be old, but may be consumer standard and it should work even well if your internet bandwidth isn’t the fastest.

I would also doubt that this solution will lead to a mentionable conversion rate from free basic to paying premium.

(But anyway if time will come I will consider an iphone 12 pro... 😉)

Im running..."v 10.5.7 build 458420 public. Editor: v114.1.14753. Service: v1.25.2" on MacBook Pro. The app is god awful slow. Is there any updates on resolutions to get this resolved??? I am so annoyed with it I am thinking about jumping ship to another app. Thank you.

Any update on this??? I am using the desktop app on my Macbook and it has become unusable now! The lag is so horrible it doesn't work. I am having to write things down in notepad and copy them into Evernote in order to have them with my other notes. Do I need to switch to something else or is this issue being worked on/ addressed???

I’m reconsidering finding a new app, I’m not paying for an app that no longer provides the performance it did, works fine on my phone just not the iPad.   Evernote has not improved and i have had no responses for months other than there is an issue and they are looking into it. They offered me a refund if i apply through the apps store and told me my iPad is too old now. Given my iPad is a work provided one I’m not likely to get a new one soon.  As soon  as i find  another suitable app I’ll be moving but will have good memories of Evernote for many years now. RIP Evernote.

THIS IS AWFUL!   I am running (no, I am crawling) with version 10.8.5-mac-ddl-public on my Mac which is running Mac OS Big Sur 11.2.   And literally Evernote now cannot keep up with my typing.

I've been a long-time subscriber to Evernote for many years and use it daily.   The latest updates to the client have been a major step backwards in performance.   I've suffered:

1. Notes opening which are blank

2. Typing into a note (large note as it is a running log of notes from one client) results in lag time between typing and text appearing on the screen that I am reminded of using dial-up 300bps models (or less) back when dinosaurs roamed the cooling earth.

Evernote - your quality has really slipped with these latest code revisions.    If things don't improve, I will be moving to a new Notes platform out of necessity as I take notes daily at work on calls, etc.

Hope you will fix this.   You've been a great app over the years, but performance of late is very poor.

Opening the app on my iphone is SO SLOW I usually forget what I was going to write between coming up with the thought and an Evernote NEW NOTE finally opening and ready for me to type.  There should be an instantaneous way to start writing.  Otherwise it is useless.  (Evernote USED to work this well before the upgrade).  Any thoughts on how to speed up the app opening and ready to use? Any chance for an INSTANT TYPE function that doesn't have to wait for the entire app to load and sync?

A 6S has appr. 1/10th of the transistors of a 12 on his chip. Plus it is short of RAM, which means it probably needs to swap a lot between flash memory and RAM. I like the policy of Apple to provide us with recent iOS on older devices, and in general our 6S+ runs well with most apps. EN v10 is an exception, it really suffers on that hardware.

Yes, it makes a huge difference.

We run EN on a 6S+ and on a 11 Pro Max. On the 6S, it is usable, but far from snappy. You need some patience. On the 11 it runs ok in all aspects.
