Ability to resize images

File this probably under "feature requests" because I'm fairly certain this isn't possible right now.

Can we get a method of easily and quickly resizing images inserted into notes with simple drag edges-resizing seen in most apps?

As a student I work with a lot of flow charts and images and it always annoys me when I have to insert a massive one that shrouds all the text in the documents. Makes the whole thing look clumsy and out of proportion.

This isn't currently available, easiest thing is to right click on the image, open in Preview, resize, save and then you are good to go.

I disagree. In fact, the lack of this feature has been the primary reason that I haven't fully adopted Evernote.

That said, however, I don't want to permanently alter the file size of images. I just want to be able to zoom out so I can see the whole photo at once, yet still retain all the original data.

I use my iphone to take pictures of important documents, which I store on my computer for easy access. It's easier than a scanner. However, because of the resolution of the iphone 4s camera, the images are so HUGE in Evernote that I can't even tell what document the photo is storing! And Evernote's OCR for this function would be a no-brainer.

Being able to zoom in and out is absolutely basic functionality that most every, if not every, image viewing software offers. IMHO, it's a sorely missing feature from Evernote, and is keeping at least one potential "Paid" customer in the "Free" column.

I for one strongly wish this feature be added soon because it's way too important, especially on a mobile platform.

I also agree that this feature is crucial, and the main reason I haven't adopted Evernote. As stated above, I can easily resize images in other programs, but don't want to do so because it would discard data.

It isn't a matter of resizing the actual linked image, but rather how it is displayed within Evernote. A behavior similar to Word, where upon clicking the image you get corner handles and adjust the image as you wish.

For a program that aims at helping organize your ideas, the lack of this kind of basic controls is a big handicap.

My specific example:

As a designer, I would like to use EN to gather inspiration images, photos, etc for a particular project. Much like a moodboard, where I could have a nice overview of the references, both text and images.

However, it is common to have very big images. The way EN deals with images right now would force me to scroll through notes over 20.000 pixels tall (aprox. 30 images), and bits of text lost in between. This is extremely impractical and annoying.

I'm sure a lot of people would enjoy this possibility, and use EN way more as a result.

Evernote has quickly become a tool that I use on a daily basis and has replaced other note-taking tools like OneNote that I used to use. So far, the only hole that I've found in the functionality is Evernote's handling of images. Evernote's great because it allows for quick and easy note taking on multiple devices but the inability to a) automatically resize images for your screen and reduce the file size of images captured using your phone, etc. really detract from the usability for image-type notes.

Agreed. I found this thread specifically hoping for a way to do this. I would love it if there was both the options to change the images native resolution and display size within evernote, but the latter would be just as well. I've been combing through scans of artbooks and copy-pasting inspiring images to reference later and, as is the nature of scanned raws, the massive image sizes are cumbersome and filling my 1gb limit far faster than I'd like. I don't want to resize and export these one at a time, although I will if I must, until this feature is (hopefully) implemented.

But then I remembered the great screencapture app "Skitch Plus" and gave it a try. With 3 clicks you can capture that image again, resize it and simply drag it back into evernote. Just make sure you deselected "Drag out as original size" in Skitch.

But nevertheless a direct resizing feature in evernote would be great!

yes, springpad makes thumbnails, but it doesn't have a desktop client, which is a big drawback for me. so i'm really hoping Evernote integrates this soon.

In my opinion, Springpad and Evernote have radically different aims, and are pursuing them in very different ways. There are lots of things that I like about Springpad (and all sorts of other apps). You'll want to use the apps that meet your needs, but what are some of the reasons why I rely on Evernote?

- Evernote has a sustainable business model with a plan to stick around at least 100 years -- I am still unclear about how Springpad's ad-based model is going to work as they scale up

- it stores my data safe and secure forever on its own servers, even if I never pay a dime -- Springpad rents space from Amazon

- it provides me with my own copy of the data on my devices, so I have offline access and total data security -- when I have no connection or Amazon's servers go down, Springpad is unavailable

- it is accessible from any device with native applications for just about everything -- Springpad has iOS, Android, and Web clients only

- it is conducive to a paperless existence by allowing notes up to 50MB in size -- I think Springpad still has a 5MB file upload limit

- Evernote is a platform with lots of third-party integrations, so that even if Evernote doesn't develop that particular feature you are wanting, someone probably has, and it works with Evernote -- Springpad has an API as well, but seems to have far fewer third-party integrations

This is an Evernote forum, and I am an Evernote Evangelist, so I guess you have to expect that I'd say something like this But, setting my clear bias aside, as I said above, there are some things to like about Springpad. My point is more that while Evernote and Springpad have some overlapping use cases / functionality, I think they are going in very different directions, and it is a good idea to keep this in mind if you are planning to work with an app for an extended period of time.

My images are the exact same size in terms of megabytes and height/width. Could you tell us how much it increased and give us some more details about your workflow? Maybe it is a difference in our scanners or scanner software. As for the forum software you mentioned, that seems non-sequitur here. Does it resize images?

+1 We really need this... if Evernote is supposed to be a flexible tool to Gather information only, then well and good. But if Evernote wants to improve the experience people have of actually going back and Looking at their information, then the editing tools need to be improved. Become a OneNote? No. But come on, make it so I can quickly adjust an image, left or right justify it, and add a margin. This is basic stuff.

This single missing feature just made evernote a waste of time for me to even review, and more to the point, they just lost any chance of a paid upgrade with me. Evernote is all over iOS and Mac, and you're telling me they think letting users resize an image they import is a waste of dev time? Well by all means, just remove image import all the way around then.

Look, I haven't seen a software package of any substantial backing that would let you import images and then not resize/manipulate them. Even free products like Google Docs does this... makes me sad.

Where are you uploading the pictures from? For instance, on the iPhone, it gives you a few options as to what file size you want to upload (actual, large, etc.).

I'm not an iPhone user (yet) but my Android doesn't have this option. The only thing I can do is lower the resolution on the camera. I don't understand why we can't simply have a setting to control this. The way I use Evernote, I can say that 99.99% of the time I would only want to upload web-quality images. The way it's being done now, the images take a long time to upload / download and they end up sucking up a lot of unneeded space in my Evernote account. The power of Evernote in my opinion is the way it makes it so easy to take a note and have it appear on all of my devices. Having to jump through hoops to reduce the size of the image really doesn't seem to fit with the simplicity that Evernote has obviously gone through a lot of pains to maintain in the product.

This feature (image resizing) was present in evernote version 2. In fact there was a keyboard shortcut for it - Ctl-h. I don't know what the reason could have been for removing it. For a while I was keeping an old version of EN simply for this feature. I don't know why they would remove it, but then I don't know why they can't fix some of the egregious formatting glitches that happen every time you past something that isn't plain text or why they would suddenly make tab increase the indent rather than insert a tab. The product does most of what I want it to and has been tremendously helpful, but it's still an ugly duckling.

I took some pictures (5) with my iPhone and uploaded to Evernote (as usual) and now, a month later, I wanted to forward them to a collegue so that we could disucss them. I really do not know if he will view on his PC or on his iPhone. However, one thing is for sure, the intention is to not kep the email after we have talked about them for a couple of minutes by phone. A simple "show me and let's talk abot it" transaction. Then delete them from his system.

He did NOT need the images any larger than 15kB jpg files.

I actaully wanted to keep the pictures in my EN at their full resolution as I have no idea what elese I might need them for later.

So, he now has a 20Mb file to download which has taken 20 mins and costs him 20% of his monthly data plan on his iPhone. He is NOT happy. And it took a long time.

This scenario happens almost daily...

There must be some way for EN to add image re-sizing across the whole of EN for people like me..

With image rotation it seems that they are adding some image manipulation, so I'm guessing that resizing will come along eventually.

In the meantime there are many many tools that you can use to resize your images. Use Preview, it's free, takes no time at all and has a bunch of other features that Evernote will probably never choose to add.

It's fine to make suggestions, I wouldn't expect (after having been here for awhile) Evernote staff to comment on all of them, particularly those that have prior discussion, and those that they've already commented on. As far as I know, they do read all posts here. Typically though, because it's Evernote policy not to disclose their roadmap (much less delivery timeframes), for feature requests their comments are likely to be of the "Thanks for the suggestion" type, or maybe a clarifying question (but I'm guessing that this particular issue needs no further clarification; the justifications and parameters are pretty well-known). Forum search can help you find other discussions in the issue, some of which have Evernote staff commentary.

As Jeff said (and has been mentioned on the board many, many times), Evernote does not publish their road map and/or ETAs. Pretty much the best thing you'll get is "thank you for the suggestion" or a similar variation.

While this is very useful to edit images, a general resize IMO is a standard feature.

Evernote without this feature, since I've posted my forum comment, has grown on me, and I'm now moving all my google docs to it. It's the best option I could find between google docs, Apple iCloud/Pages, etc.

Interesting - good video. I can see the power of being able to open the image in a separate application and save it back Evernote if you're looking to do complicated edits / changes. I think what I and other people that have posted to this thread are really looking for is simply the ability to control the image size / quality at the time that the note is created - without having to perform a number of additional steps after the fact. Not having this feature means that I'm sending 5MB files every time I add a picture to one of my notes.

+1 I'd be so helpful to be able to scale images. The image itself shouldn't be resized (so that I can open it in full size in external application), but it should be displayed in smaller scale. I can even do it in this web wysiwig editor I'm currently using to write this post. Since enex format is just xml it's enough just to add proper "width" and "height" attributes

Image resizing is a must! I'd go a bit further still: integrate indesign/scribus/quark type functionality. It could be an add-on maybe? Regardless, it would allow us, users, to make nicely laidout notes.

It seems to me that evernote is aiming to move towards business and sharing concepts. I am note sharing some scruffy notes with oversized images with my boss or team! No, I need to make my images fit nicely with the text.

And about using third party software to change the image size, it is simply ridiculous. I m taking notes, coping images from websites, taking pictures, screenshots etc... I dont want to be saving the image on a desktop or anywhere else. I am saving it to my notes, that is where the image lives and stays! So that is where it should look good!

Please I love Evernote, but this is becoming a real pain! I want nice layout! It is key to productivity!!!!!!

On the Windows platform the display size is adjusted to the window size very nicely. And a double click will open my native image viewer where I can bring up full size easily. On Firefox, the image size is also adjusted to the display window and right click has a view image option that also works ok.

As a business user, I often need to compose a note that includes images, graphs, even chunks of spreadsheets. For those I would very much like more flexibility in placement, sizing and text flow for the images in my note.

As a personal user who is just keeping notes for my own reference, i can live with the minimal display adjustment to current window. But I do not want to share a note with a boss or client where reading the note is a chore due to the images always taking over the entire width of the display space. I would prefer that the full size image remain available through context menu, but without even the minimal adjustments that, for example, Blogger allows, it's very difficult to compose a final report in Evernote.

PS I really like the copy and past of images feature: I find it quite convenient to use a screen grabber to select an image or part of an image on my monitor and paste it directly into a note.

Having read the posts so far, it sounds like there are two quite distinct features being requested here:

1. Adjust the display size of an image, by clicking on the image to display resize handles and then dragging these. This is useful in controlling the layout of the note, so fthat large images don't take over the whole display area. Almost every application that supports insertion of images into text provides resizing in this way.

2. Rescale the images to reduce their data size, either individually or when emailing to others. This is useful for reducing storage and bandwidth usage for syncing notes or sending/receiving EN-generated emails.

Both of these seem me to to be very useful potential additions to Evernote. The first is more critical to me, but I can see that others who use EN differently from me might prioritize differently.

I'd really would like to have this option too, my problem is that I take a picture with my iPhone and import in Evernote, now the picture is soo big in size in pixel and size in mb's......

Normally not a problem but I use Evernote for test reports and when I'm in the factory in China the internet is very slow or very expensive and I really would like to save bandwidth .

so please give us a resize option inside Evernote, the resize in Preview doesn't work well because the picture can be resized in Preview and "saved" when you close it but the actual size in Evernote will remain the same

At the moment, we can take several shots with one go with our Iphone or Ipad with evernote. I would like to be able batch downsize the images to 800 px or 2000px in width before saving it. This feature should be made available with skitch too!

I see EN's chief competitor to be OneNote, and the main reason I first used EN since the Mac version of Office does not include ON. Granted, EN should stick to their own design principles, but flexibility and control over note layout is a key feature of ON and would seem to be the same for EN (eventually). Image resize would be one improvement to put them on par. EN could go one step further and allow users the option of resizing the image as stored or only as viewed.

Registered here, just to be able to join in this feature-request. Notes with images are simply unusuable within Evernote. It's just silly to see just a corner of a photograph as the note, with text completely out of view.

Every other note-app I know has this feature. Heck, even this forum is able to show pictures in different-than-native size.

When I first used Evernote a few weeks ago, I spent 10 minutes searching for the option, never realizing that it might not be available. Then I used google, and was surprized that it indeed isn't.

It's just plain silly, imho.

Evernote is the only note-app that I know of that really works well cross-platform, with centrally stored notes. But as soon as other note-apps offer this option, I'm dumping Evernote, just for the lack of an image-resize option.

I value these features. My primary use of evernote is taking screenshots of software images and then writing notes about the images. To get the proper image size on screen I put images inside of a 1x1 table or bigger. This isn't too hard and sufficient for my uses. I can see that the images will start to take up too much space on my account, so I would highly value and even pay for a premium account if evernote provided a way to manage the maximum resolution of photos stored on their server.

More than just resizing images in terms of their overall file size, I'd like to be able to have an image not span the entire width of a note. If you could drag the corner of the image to make it smaller and allow text to wrap around it - that would be great.

Just in case you may not know. The linux clone version Everpad, has this feature. Resize image while keeping its size, no quality lost.

 

I guest Evernote use html as its back end display. If so, the dev should let user to edit the html code of the note, that would allow power users to fix the notes themselves. A lot of requests for features would be addressed as users could edit the code to suit their need.

 

The minute EN would make their ENML easily edited by the masses is the minute they start getting all kinds of support tickets b/c someone munged up their really important note.   As Jeff pointed out, there is a third party option for those who choose to use it.

 

It's always easy for users to say "the linux client/Egretlist/Clever/etc does this so it should be easy for EN to implement."  The difference is most third party apps answer only to one OS.  EN aims for feature parity across all platforms/devices (not that they are there, but it's a goal) and must insure features they add work well across all platforms.

Urk. From my experience, and maybe it's changed recently, iTunes on Windows is not exactly a poster child for "great" cross-platform development. My reaction spanned the gamut between "wretched!" and "Uninstall".

 

Java, on the other hand, is notable for its ability to make your computer cross-platform hackable.

1. Adjust the display size of an image, by clicking on the image to display resize handles and then dragging these. This is useful in controlling the layout of the note, so fthat large images don't take over the whole display area. Almost every application that supports insertion of images into text provides resizing in this way.

2. Rescale the images to reduce their data size, either individually or when emailing to others. This is useful for reducing storage and bandwidth usage for syncing notes or sending/receiving EN-generated emails.

Both of these seem me to to be very useful potential additions to Evernote. The first is more critical to me, but I can see that others who use EN differently from me might prioritize differently.

I now know how to resize picture (at least on Mac) by opening the picture in external application such as preview.app. However, for some reasons, while Evernote understands the picture is of lower resolution, it doesn't resize the display! For example, I take pictures of credit card receipts that I can store and later submit for expense reports. I don't need that picture to be 2 pages long when I print. Instead, I would like it to be in minimal size so when I print, it will be within a single page. Right now, the solution shown above just gives me a lower resolution picture that prints in the original size (2 pages per receipt typically).

 

At this moment, only way to go around doing this is to save the picture files, resize them in external app, then load each picture file to appropriate note. It is not an elegant solution.

I believe the problem that most of us who wants this feature are facing is it takes too long to sync when we take images with our mobile devices. I don't want to have to open the image up with another app after taking an image to resize it first before importing it to Evernote for syncing.

Aside from it being a basic necessary feature, it's not exactly hard to implement. And there are enough people frustrated with this!

 

I agree with the rest and would say that using images with Evernote is so badly implemented it's unuseable. I made a note with a photo I had taken, and when browsing the note on the desktop Evernote app, the photo takes up the whole window, making it necessary to scroll down to see the text.

 

I was going to pay for this software but based on this lack of functionality and poor customer support, I would say they've lost another customer.

I have been a paid member on and off for several years now. This year, I auto-subscribed to be a constant paying customer. While this feature is very importantly to me personally, it is an absolute must in our company of over 50 employees currently on paid subscriptions for evernote. While for Peter, the first point was more critical, the second point is more essential to the workflow in our company and how we use EN day in and day out. I should note that we currently have resorted to using a paid third party app that has implemented this quite well: FastEver Snap by Rakko Entertainment (apparently a SINGLE programmer from home was able to code this app, update it regularly, and sync it with Evernotes API). In the app, you select:

 

- the dimensions of the photo (which correlates to an acceptable size): lower quality settings for business cards, photos of clients, and other things we would like to load QUICKLY when utilizing 3G, or selecting higher quality when storing photos for magazine covers, website cover stories, notes, receipts, and documentatoin requiring OCR.

 

Our company employs reporters and journalist, foodies, photographers, accountants, and legal services among many things, and all of them are provided with a paid EN subscription currently. We are ALWAYS on the go and rely heavily on syncing our evernote photos (receipts, notes, pictures, business cards, etc.) via 3G/LTE via our phones instantly. Peter's point on display size of an image is aesthetically important, yet the efficiency and speed of which notes can be uploaded, downloaded, viewed, shared over mobile phones is absolutely essential to how we implement evernote professionally in the business (point 2: rescale to reduce data size)

 

The problem: FastEver Snap is only available for the iPhone. Many of our employees have already begun switching to Android based phones, and we haven't found a suitable alternative in the Google Android app store or elsewhere. So essentially, our company is back to square one... taking HUGE DATA HOG photos with Android smartphone cameras, importing it to Evernote AS IS, and incurring LONG WAIT TIMES to both upload and view the images for the sending and receiving end, while simoultaneously using up EN data transfer unnecessarily.

 

In recent months discussions for alternative means of datasharing, workflow, logging, etc. within out business has proceeded to action and we will unfortunately be dropping our 50+ subscriptions as needed to accomodate for the reasons discussed.

 

CONCLUSION: If a single young programmer is capable of programming this Photo Taking Evernote Syncing App with sizing options over the course of a weekend, AND ONLY charge a one time app purchase fee of $1.99, AND maintain regular updates on it that coincice with Evernote updates, my expectations are that Evernote ought to politely ask one of its elite programmers if s/he could spend an hour or two creating a resize function into its stock app, or a separate photo taking app for the growing mobile Android smartphone market (not to mention the mainstream iPhone market).

 

It could be however that our concerns are unique to our company and not expressed by the majority of EN iPhone and Android mobile users out there.

Thanks for the referral to FastEver Snap, I downloaded it and it works great for pictures taken from my iPhone.  But, what about images taken from the desktop?  I frequently take a screen image and paste it into irfanview (a FANTASTIC image viewer/manipulator) and cut the section I want and paste it into EN.   That image then dominates the screen and is huge regardless of the size of the image I paste.

 

This is horrible and I let my EN premium subscription lapse because of this.  Come on guys, get with it.

Might I add that the developer of FastEver is also quite responsive to email for suggestions, bug fixes, etc. Over the years, I have reported minor bugs that only occur in my unique circumstances, and he responded overnight with a solution or recommendation.

 

In fact, here is some food for thought: Perhaps Evernote ought to consider acquiring Rakko Entertainment and its developer(s) for their growing line of EN apps and highly personable programmers. Afterall, Japan is EN's largest and most loyal client market according to some articles, and also where Rakko is situated I believe. This wouldn't solve our Android smartphone EN photo-taking dilemma, but at least the existing iPhone users would have a nice package rolled into one.

 

The importance of this thread for EN probably should not be taken lightly. The 'Photo' niche is already very big and only getting bigger as evident by 'photo-features' in most apps being roll-out these days including Dropbox, banking apps such as BoA, Google Goggles/Glass, etc. The list goes on.

 

I'm sure the smart folks at EN must be working on something to address the concerns in this thread, if not assigning a committee to debate circles around it.

Replying to show support for this feature. I love the use of Evernote for taking notes in webinars. When I snap a screenshot and paste it in Evernote, the size is often massive and crowds out any following notes. Not looking for any type of photo storage, just a way to keep my notes tidy. Thanks!

I think this is a big issue to take into account. Since EN has availability to attach or snap images, the optimizing option for those images should also be included. I use EN mainly on mac but if I were to use it on my iphone which becomes a problem, large image files cannot even be shown. They need to be downloaded first in order to see them.

Another problem is that if I were to export my notes to html format, the texts and various size of images don't really seems to be looking good together.

And because the image sizes will be different for different sources, EN should put a feature like standard resolution or size for the optimization which would be very useful. This is not an image editing feature to say. It's just for the best optimization purpose.

This is one of the key things that holds me back from going premium. EN tag line is "Remember Everything" actually I'd like EN to remember it (so I can retrieve it later); to do it simply and effectively. Since a picture is worth a 1,000 words it is often a preferred way of remembering and jogging the memory. Being able to downsize the image so file is smaller is pretty essential to many ... would sure be nice if this were implemented by EN soon, AND it'd be great if one could have a couple of user defined presets so that you could invoke these quickly for different situations (photo of a receipt on a biz trip versus higher quality photo of textiles where capturing the texture of the fabric is important). Think I'll have to explore FastEver Snap and suggest to that developer to have user defined presets. SO far what I remember of putting a photo in EN from iPhone is that it was a horrible experience; ate thru my non-premium account monthly limit by "connecting" large file sizes without warning me at all (in user guide) or on screen that I was eating thru my usage limit. It is actually surprising that I am still experimenting with EN, and that is due mostly to this excellent forum, that unfortunately is consulted too often for work-arounds for what seems to be EN's have-baked features that can often create huge frustration.

Jackolicious perhaps I might be grateful that you dropped by and posted (afterall you are products manager), but I find your post non-enlightening. Has there been some recent change to Skitch that might address the post quoted above that implies having to make a round trip out of EN to Skitch is NOT painless, and does NOT effectively respond to customer typical use of EN.

 

I would become a premium user but amongst other reservations I have about EN, (what I consider) half-baked EN features is at the top of the list. Using a photo image of low resolution, small file size would be an extremely useful EN feature. The official website, and many articles, and ebooks on using EN recommend taking a quick snap shot of a white board, restaurant menu, clothes sample, window shopping, conference agenda, etc. but implementing that in EN is not easy let alone slick. Emailing images from an iPhone camera roll (where the iPhone allows reducing file size) is great but EN rotates some images 90 degrees so this is another gotcha. A recent thread on Google Keep mentions that it in version 1 has that part solved and manages (like many other software offerings) to orient a photo so the intended top is displayed in the up position. I would be thoroughly embarrassed by the poor implementation that EN offers.

 

I imagine that you might be offended by this post, however I believe that much of it is simply a statement of facts supporting my claim that EN has some mature features that are still really just half-baked. If it were not for this excellent forum and the ingenious work arounds that EN old-timers offer, I would have abandoned EN long ago, and I only started struggling with it 6 weeks ago. I care enough (and am hopeful enough) that someone with enough clout might actually get some things (that some/many here on the forum) feel are basic to actually work in an effective manner. Thanks for listening and considering making some of these things a much higher priority.

I don't think you know what you are talking about!! Case 2, or at least what I want to do is take "attach/insert" a photo into a Note so that the photo has a small file size. EN (and as far as I can see Skitch) makes this simple act pretty tough to accomplish on an iPhone. Just used Skitch and it "brought in" the photo at 6.MB and took 60 seconds to sync over wi-fi, and for me that is useless.

 

Others on forum have suggested the paid app FastEver Snap which I purchased and am using. I find EN development to be ridiculous requiring so many work around, other apps (your own Skitch) or something else to accomplish some pretty fundamental usability. One picture is worth a thousand words and EN's tag line is "Remember Everything" ... well here is a funny suggestion for you ... how about making it quick and easy to allow users to save quickly and easily what something looks like without it taking up enormous storage space. Sync would be quicker, it wouldn't eat up your server space, slow down the internet with unwanted and useless (for some memories) bloated file sizes.  While Skitch might be useful in some instances if you know how to take a photo that highlights what is important and what it is you want to remember then it is in many circumstances completely unnecessary to add anything else and the latter would only slow down one's productivity. Thanks for listening, but quite frankly I have given up on expecting Evernote to make wise choices on my behalf and will continue to rely on the forum as it is clear that EN will continue to require many work arounds in order to deal with the (far too many) EN annoyances. Why would you expect Evernote to make "wise choices" on your behalf?  You are but one of what was it last count, sixty million plus?, users.   They apparently have been making wise choices for a majority of their users.  Something that you call "some pretty fundamental usability" is not necessarily what many others would call fundamental.  The forum is ripe with feature requests that others call "basic functions" & many of them are different from yours.  (More fonts, highlighting, sub-notebooks, lan syncing, blah, blah, blah.) The app may not do everything you want it to do.  I know it doesn't do everything *I* want it to do.  But the apps & service continue to evolve & become better & better.  And there are workarounds that you can use or else find another app that better suits your needs.  But to broad brush Evernote as ignoring *you* is silly.

You can easily resize images (their physical size) in Skitch. From Evernote, that just means clicking the Skitch icon in the note editor toolbar and choosing an image (or right clicking an image, and choosing to markup in skitch). Then, resize the image in skitch and then save back to Evernote. You should be able to both reduce file size and decrease display size this way.

As far as I can see Skitch is an awful product.  Evernote can't deal with the images... "Evernote can not edit a note created in Skitch" so what good is that?  I usually want to put some text around my images to add value.  But, once an image is in Evernote then "Mark up with Skitch" and then pressing the + and - keys to resize the image does work.

 

FWIW, I stopped being a premium customer over this issue.

- Notes created in Skitch can not be edited because they contain other metadata that allow for some cool advanced Skitch functionality (think repeated PDF annotation)

- Let's say you have an image in a regular Evernote note. You can right click that image (or use the Skitch button in the note editor toolbar) to markup that image. Any modifications to that image will get put right back in place in the original Evernote note (complete with other content). Agreed, however for a company that has a tag line "Remember Everything" and in our western culture which is quite visually oriented (and perhaps increasingly so) the challenges in saving to EN a photo of a white board (from a biz brain storming session, or ...) or many of 100s of other suggested uses of EN is NOT easy if you want that image to be of small file size (so that it syncs fast; does not eat up your (free) account space; and does not needlessly use EN server space storing a 6MB image in the note when one of 150KB would probably be quite adequate. I have read some of the other threads around this and similar image issues with EN, and yes there are differences of how important it is to a particular user. I have my work around and from you and others have learned others for what I consider to be EN annoyances. None are yet deal killers, but it is one of many things that keeps me from becoming Premium, and one poster in this thread dropped Premium due to issues in this image management area.  And FWIW I currently view EN in 3 stages (Ingestion Digestion Retrieval): For some things it is quick and easy to get into EN; I'd consider highlighting text that I wrote or that was clipped from website a fundamental part of Digesting/Processing. EN is quite good at retrieval via search but if what comes up is not quick and easy to then utilize then some of its value has been lost. Many people suffer from and with data overload, so highlighting (summarizing and other strategies) are perhaps important to store those "memories" so that they have better usefulness when retrieved. Just my opinion.

I copied and pasted in some images from iphoto into EN and they take up the entire width of the note because they are high resolution. I deleted the originals in iphoto because I don't need the pics in two places. I'm glad EN kept the high resolution version, but I'd like to be able to resize it to a non-ridiculous size, while preserving the ability to open the high resolution version if I want.

 

I don't want to have to open Skitch for EVERY single picture that I bring into Evernote just to resize it. That's dumb.

I recently reactivated my Evernote account, and while I have found that the desktop app is much, MUCH nicer to use ( the old Mac app was laggy as heck), I am still flabbergasted that Evernote does not handle images in any sort of useful way. I can drop a bunch of images into a note, but there is still no way to arrange, caption, float, or resize them. OR I can make each image a note and then look at them one at a time. Sorry, this just doesn't cut it. Basic WYSIWYG image handling seems a no-branier. SInce my primary interest is in visual media, Evernote is sadly, still, not what I'm looking for.

I do not see how this can be done w/ Skitch.

Skitch can crop (delete pixels) and zoom, but that's not resizing.
