  1. You should use a true password manager for this type of info. Well again its all about convenience and who do you trust. Lastpass was hacked 2 years back. Evernote makes it easy to store information and find them. Even though i dont condone people to store things like password out in the open, but evernote certainly has the ability to store sensitive information. The encryption feature is also great but sadly its on "Per note" basis and not on entire account or notebook. A simple passcode lock will certainly add an extra layer of security on the existing secured and awesome Evernote. Hi. I don't think LastPass was ever certain if they got hacked or what was taken, right? My understanding is that whatever happened, if the evildoers got a tiny amount of encrypted data (usernames and passwords), it hasn't apparently resulted in anyone's account actually getting hacked. Evernote does a lot of great things, but when it comes to encryption and passwords, I think LastPass is going to come out ahead in any comparison. That's because they do it for a living. For example, Evernote doesn't offer strong encryption of data (64-bit). As for the password protected account on the Mac, I think it is really just for show, because anyone with physical access to your computer could just open Spotlight and comb through your stuff. Every Mac has far better protection (separate user accounts and filevault) than Evernote could possibly design into an app. That's just my opinion, though. I didn't follow up on that news. But all i am pointing out is, even the most secured services may be hacked by sophisticated attacks (be it lastpass, evernote or gmail). A group of people may track down the data centre of Evernote and walk out with their servers that contains user information. But Is it a likely scenario? No. But A user leaving his computer unlocked for 5 mins and a co-worker/friend snooping into the Evernote is a more likely scenario...and also a scenario that can be easily stopped by adding a basic passcode. 64-128 bit encryption is great, and I am sure eventually evernote will do more R&D on those areas to prevent unauthorised access. They have well over 200million in funding to date and also looking to go IPO in 2015. So I am sure all those money will eventually go somewhere to make the product more secured for sophisticated external hacks. Good points. Regarding your scenario, to put my advice another way -- secure your device and Evernote will be secure. If I were in your scenario, I could do far more to protect myself now than Evernote could do with all of their money and R+D. I think Evernote would agree (http://discussion.evernote.com/topic/1716-make-encryption-global/?p=18623). How? I have a hot corner (see your preferences) set so that just swiping into the corner of the screen shuts the screen off. It takes less than a second and the entire computer is locked. Even if it were stolen, the drive is encrypted (filevault), so it is pretty unlikely anything (not just Evernote) would be compromised. If someone wants to use your computer, just tap your name in the upper right hand corner, select the guest account (see your preferences) and you are secured.

  3. Hi. Welcome to the forums. There is no manual sort in Evernote. OneNote is a product that has it. Some possible workarounds with Evernote include using the Shortcuts area (on Mac) for manual sorting. Alternatively, you could create an "index" note with links to all of the notes for your writing, and move those note links around within the index note. Outside of Evernote, Scrivener is an excellent piece of software designed for writers. It uses the index card metaphor. I quite like it. This means that Evernote becomes my place for research and Scrivener is used for writing.
  4. Where are the antis? If you search the board, I think you'll find lots of support for it, and also many users who are ambivalent, but does anyone say they "don't want the option to encrypt notebooks," or they "are anti-encryption"?If by "they," you mean Vernote, then I can assure you they have heard. You can even find them in some of the threads responding. Just because they disagree and don't do everything we suggest doesn't mean they are not listening. Have we convinced them yet? No. But, maybe recent events are moving us closer to it. Maybe, if you offered your specific security concerns, and specific reasons for wanting it then that would be more convincing.
  5. Good points. I wouldn't be surprised if they float a date (as they did with 2fa), so it doesn't hurt to ask for a general timeline. However, they might not be able to give it, because this is a kind of test phase, and they want to see how it goes. Assuming all goes well, it might be quite soon. Encrypted notebooks would be great, especially if it was a SpiderOak Zero-Knowledge thing, but I wouldn't hold my breath
  6. True. It would have been nice if they could do it all at once, but I think a gradual phasing in of the feature starting with a few thousand people is a lot better than throwing it out to 40 million people, because any hiccups are much less disruptive this way. Obviously, you could upgrade to Premium for a few months if you want to take advantage of the feature! This is (in my memory) one of the few times when Evernote has explicitly said a feature is headed for Free when they introduce it, so I think it is good to see the commitment there.
  7. I haven't used Evernote much lately. Why? Because these features are crucial to what I'm using evernote for and frankly if it cant show me the appropriate image, and allow me to choose both the thumbnail, or OCR settings for images, I have no time for this product. Sadly we're using a business account, so I'm holding out. What OCR settings would you like? Are you talking about language settings? If so, you can change them. http://www.christopher-mayo.com/?p=85
  8. Hi. Welcome to the forums. It's not an omission, but a design decision (search the forums and you will find discussions about this). I would also like to see manual sorting, but if/until we get it, there are a couple of workarounds: (1) Arrange note links in a note to create a table of contents. You can move things about as you please. (2) Use the Shortcuts area to arrange notes as you would like.
  9. Hi. Welcome to the forums. I agree that the current system is not ideal, especially when others are unfamiliar with Evernote. One solution is to change the created date of a "table of contents" note to something far in the future (this will move it to the top in the default settings on the Web) and put note links to all of the notes in your notebook. Because you can arrange things in any order you like, with indents and the like, it makes the notebook very easy to navigate.
  10. Conflicts are so infrequent for me (I am using a Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Nexus 7) that I might only be able to use such an application a few times a year. More importantly, I don't subscribe to very many things, and I have a pretty high bar for services I will spend money to use. Microsoft, for example, has a new subscription model, and I am quite certain they will never see another dollar from me. I would have upgraded to Microsoft Office 2013 or 2014 for the Mac if I were purchasing a license from them (as in the past) with a one-time fee, but now that they want me to pay $10 every month for the rest of my life (the same scheme you suggested), I am afraid they have killed off this particular golden goose. I should say that I consider Microsoft Word to be one of the best word processors I have ever used, I quite like it, and word processors are central to my professional life, and I am not even willing to pay $10 a month for it. How much less am I inclined to pay for a service that resolves a few sync conflicts in Evernote If you have the programming skill, I'd recommend something more worthwhile. For example, I know there are many people, like myself, who would like to see Markdown support in Evernote, an alternative iOS app (in case the main one is acting funky), etc.
  11. Good luck with it, and feel free to ask any questions if those links don't answer them.
  12. Hi Rob. Welcome to the forums. You can only have stacks, and notebooks within those. There is a lot of discussion on the forums about how to handle the organizational tools available. These might give you some ideas. http://discussion.evernote.com/topic/22415-how-i-use-tags-to-replicate-nested-folders/ http://discussion.evernote.com/topic/33175-organizational-structure-in-the-stacknotebooktag-ecosystem/
  13. No worries. That's what I am here to do! By the way, Evernote has termed them "online-only" notebooks, and said we will get to the point when people's accounts are huge and it is no longer feasible to sync to every device (I reached that point in August last year). However, there are search issues involved with this, and so it is not here yet. If you want to hear them talk about it, check out 40:25-43:28 in "Evernote Podcast #28 – Gnarly, Dude," June 30, 2011, http://blog.evernote.com/blog/2011/06/30/evernote-podcast-28-gnarly-dude/
  14. Hi. I think this is the same as the longstanding request for "selective sync." I have merged your thread with the existing one. The good news is that Evernote has said it is "inevitable" and developers have confirmed that they are working on it. However, the bad news is that we don't have it yet.
  15. Hi. Welcome to the forums. Could you tell us what client you are using? The spell check works perfectly fine for me (see screenshots earlier in the thread).
  16. Hi. Welcome to the forums. I hope you don't mind if I merge this with one of the existing threads on this topic. This is an oft-requested feature, as is the ability to manually sort.
  17. What excuses? The spell-check works. I would say it even works really well. Please see the screenshots I posted. It might be more constructive to narrow down the Evernote client that is causing problems (Windows?) and talk about specifics rather than calling everything mediocre. I would say the point is to get the facts straight, identify any problems that exist, and then push the developers to come up with solutions.
  18. Oh, geez, I missed that. Looks like it. Cool. I guess all of us are on shard 1. Well, except for that newbie Chris! Five years already...
  19. LOL!!! That was posted after I'd trialed the beta & decided EN was not for me. But before I'd returned to EN in Oct 2008. And apparently it was never linked to, in all the subsequent nested notebook threads. Or at least I don't recall seeing it, if it was. I will Evernote the fact that I found something on the forum that you did not know about. There is a first for everything! By the way, I first joined Evernote in Oct. 2008 as well. My "Welcome to Evernote!" note is still there dated 10/28/2008. Fun fact: click on the girl wearing the "triple nerd score" t-shirt and you get taken to bustedtees (http://www.bustedtees.com/triplenerdscore#female). I wonder how much bustedtees paid to get an ad like this into everyone's notes, and I wonder when these ads stopped getting included in the first note.
  20. Thanks for posting that link, GM. I don't recall ever seeing that & have Evernoted it for future reference. I don't believe you BNF. I don't think it is possible for me to uncover something you haven't Evernoted already. Check your notes again
  21. Hi. I don't know why we can't have nested notebooks, but that is just how the system is set up. Look for posts by Dave (http://discussion.evernote.com/topic/1801-feature-request-nested-notebooks/?p=9002) for some of the thinking behind this. I am afraid I can only offer advice on the app that is, and not the app that could/should be. Tags, for most purposes, function exactly the same way as notebooks, so I don't see why organizing by tags is difficult. A search for tag:evernote or notebook:evernote will show you exactly the same notes, in exactly the same order. The only thing missing from tags is non-organizational stuff like the ability to share them, make them local, etc. In the end, though, if you are into hierarchies of information with lots of nested folders/notebooks or tags, then Evernote is probably not well-suited to your methodology. Evernote just isn't built for that kind of a system. Personally, I prefer the more "brain" like structure, but it probably isn't for everyone.
  22. What if my note wasn't synced yet, but was only just created locally? I don't find the option mentioned by you. I just see a "Restore" line, which is greyed out though for me, even though I'm a Premium user. What? Every 8 hours only? -.- That is no note/version history functionality! That is just a "backup" function, but it won't allow me to gradually roll back items I made within the last five or one minute. I fell for your deceptive marketing. -.- I can't understand why you cannot include true note history functionality for 40 € / year, when the volume of data is much smaller than what people throw into Dropbox etc. Because Dropbox, Box, Google Drive sync every individual change, why can't Evernote do so too? (At least locally, if not via Sync) Finally: Why does "Edit > Undo" simply not work?! It almost never works when I try it! It's like that since at least one year... It's an absolute disgrace that this still isn't fixed or working properly. (Like in every other PC software since 1997!) But it's probably just your way to lure people into Premium... Hi Philipp. Sorry to hear that the features are not meeting your needs. I don't think they are trying to trick you into purchasing Premium, though. If you contact support (see the link in my signature below) they will probably offer you a refund on the remaining amount of your Premium subscription.
  23. I'm not terribly concerned about spell check myself, because my notes are written for my eyes only, and I guess I am not bothered by an occasional misspelling. Besides, in my experience, the spell check seems fine. Then again, I am using the Mac, and I am not seeing the same problems that you are. See the screen shots below.
