Can anyone please teach me how to change shortcuts...
Im interested in change the HIGHIGHT shortcut from the original mode (Ctrl + Shift + H) to (command + H)

The only customizable shortcuts can be seen in Tools > Options > Shortcut keys. That's on Windows; it may be different on Mac. On Windows, the formatting shortcuts can't be customized.

  2. @Ataraxius, the selection color is indeed a light blue. I'm fortunate enough that, although borderline elderly, I can see colors OK. So while it looks nice to me, I can understand it might not be great for everyone. ?rant follows: More and more these days, software design seems to be done by 25-year-olds for 25-year-olds. That was great 30 years ago when it was mostly people that age using computers. A bunch of us in our 60s, 70s, and upward have grown old with computers, and our visual needs have changed. We're in better health than our grandparents were at this age, and we plan to keep working on computers for a long time yet. You kids need to pay some attention! (It's OK if you come onto my lawn though!) end ?rant.

@DTLow, there's no system-level highlight setting (if that's what you're saying) on Windows, unfortunately, which lets individual apps get oh-so-clever.

I don't remember have seen in the doc :

ctrl + click on the help button of the menu to show hidden options for advanced users.

You're right, that's not documented. It's often been mentioned in these forums, so I was aware of it. But I'm not sure it's mentioned anywhere in Evernote's online Help. However, that could be because these are options that Evernote does not want users to find easily and play around with, except when instructed to by technical support people. That's just my guess.

  4. Actually, bitcoin mining is something I expect some disgruntled Evernote user to complain about someday: "I need Evernote to keep a running but encrypted total of my bitcoin fortune, and I'm leaving for OneNote until it does!"

Great, now I drifted my own thread.

Seriously, if there are other thumbnail view users around, does anyone else see this? I should add that the disappearing act does not seem to be related to the content of the note: there can be images or no images, checkbox lists or not, long or short notes, etc. Recent creation or editing seems to be the only factor, and even it is not consistent.

  5. In thumbnail view in Note List, some of my notes don't display at all. It seems to be only ones created in recent days; yet some notes created in recent days do display, and I can't find a rationale. In snippet and card views, they display properly. After a reboot of my computer, this seemed to improve, but I still have at least one note that is not visible. It doesn't matter whether the note is open in the main Evernote window or a separate one, or whether it has synced or not. Has anyone else seen this?

Please note: This is not an invitation to promote what you consider to be "the best view." I like Thumbnail, and I plan to keep using it. You know who you are. ;)

Because you keep the context (the current notebook or the All notes view). Just to be clear I am talking of the tags visible in the note (below the title) not the tags visible in the sidebar.

Thank you, that clears it up completely! I see that when viewing a particular notebook, it shows notes with the same tag only in that notebook. I still don't make much use of tags, but this will be useful as I add them.

  7. I've finally bitten the bullet (and a chewy bullet it is too) and updated to v. 6.15 of the Windows program, skipping over the bugginess of versions 6.8 and following. One thing I knew was that some keyboard shortcuts had changed in the interval, so I just went through the whole set. I found that there are several that are still undocumented in the online Help article on shortcuts. Here are the ones I found:

    • Application-wide: Ctrl + Shift + I = Display Note Info (no longer starts a new Ink note)
    • Application-wide: Shift + Alt + T = Search Tags (not Jump to Tags, as the documentation says, unless that's meant to be the same thing)
    • Editor: Ctrl + Shift + Up Arrow / Down Arrow = Make selected text superscript/subscript (see a post by @emerick here)
    • Editor: Tab at end of table to insert new row (not documented in the Help article on tables either)
    • Left Panel & Note List: use of Tab / Shift + Tab to move among panels
    • Note List: Ctrl + Alt + L = Copy Internal Link to the clipboard
    • Note List: Not really a keyboard shortcut, but really useful info that doesn't seem to be documented anywhere (except this post by @CalS): Right click a note and press Ctrl when selecting Copy Internal Link to copy an external link to the clipboard, that is, a link that will open the note in the Evernote program from elsewhere in Windows (e.g., a desktop shortcut or a link in a document)

@Shane D., sorry to flag you down, but I wonder if these could be passed along to whoever works on documentation and help. Evernote has a great set of shortcuts, but undocumented ones aren't too useful.

That's the Eisenhower method for task prioritization.

Interesting. I'll probably never be disciplined enough to do either this method or the Ignatian Examen. (I only linked to it; I didn't say I do it!) But I love the Eisenhower quote itself: “I have two kinds of problems, the urgent and the important. The urgent are not important, and the important are never urgent.” For me this points to the philosophical question of what really matters in life. What's the long-term, long-view reality and necessity? In the modern world, the really important things in life tend to lie under the surface of "Do it now!" spurious urgencies. It can be a real challenge to get to them, or even to recognize that they are there. This system might be one way of beginning to notice them; "Important and Not Urgent" might turn out to be the most significant category of all.

@Wayne Hazle, I apologize for drifting your thread! This was an interesting question, and I thank you for raising it.

  9. Very interesting post, @dbvirago, in a couple of ways. First, it makes me think of the folks who have reported on these forums that Evernote did lose data, and they were heading to OneNote for safety. I've never had any data loss in Evernote either; I'm sure it does happen, but good user habits are probably the first line of defense (maybe in OneNote too).

Secondly, this once again intrigues me about the many different ways of using Evernote. You've been using it (I gather) as an "everything in one place" repository for emails, documents to be stored, etc. I do a small amount of that, but I use Evernote mainly to take notes: to jot down ideas, copy pages from books or articles, grab Websites, record information about professional services (from builders to doctors), etc. Much of this is related to specific projects I am working on or want to work on. Being able to do this on my Android phone and on my desktop and laptop Windows PCs allows me to have a brilliant idea over breakfast, and massage it into a useless, overthought lump at my leisure. :D

To me, it seems that what are (or perhaps were originally) sidelights or ancillary features to a note-taking app (attachments, emails) have for some users become the central purpose for using Evernote. That seems to me to be the nature of a really great computer program: it gains uses as it gains users. The only downside is that I suspect it can leave the developers scrambling to keep up with their users sometimes!

  10. Hmm. I find that for me it's :D, not D:, that gets turned into a box, undoubtedly substituting for some emoji my system can't display. I followed the auto-formatting instructions, and did Tools > Options > Note > Note editing and deselected Automatically format text elements, as @msg5's screenshot also shows. And this turns everything off except the emojis. Sheesh. The only other strategy currently available is the other one listed in the instructions: "To revert auto-formatting back to the original text input: Go to Edit > Undo from the menu bar, or use keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Z." Is there an emoji for :stupid:? If not, why not?

Hmm, that makes me think: if Evernote would really listen to it's customers then there would not be so many peoply "Whining" ?

Could be. In that regard, the notice about updates and reorganization of these forums is interesting:

Among other things, it indicates that the purpose of the reorganization is to "hone in on the user sentiment more accurately and expediently, and help to provide a better overall Evernote experience."

  12. Thanks for the clarification. As I understand it, sharing in general is to an app, not to a specific document of that app. E.g., sharing to an email app creates a new email; you can't send it to an existing draft email. Sharing to a calendar app creates a new calendar event; it can't be sent to an existing event. Etc. So (again, AFAIK) it's an Android limitation, not specific to Evernote. In any case, it does seem that you have to start from a specific note, not from a photo. Hope that's helpful.

I'm a new users and can't see how to move a photo from my Android (specifically via Google Photos) to a specific Note. If I select a photo to share on my Android (Pixel 2) it gives me the option to send to Evernote, but then it appears as a new note in Evernote. I want to send the photo to a specific note. Is this possible?

Hi, @jimmyray, and welcome to Evernote and to the forums! Yes, this is done by adding an attachment to the particular note, using the paper clip icon on the top toolbar. Tap that while you're editing the note, and Photo will be one of the options. The dialog to choose the photo, at least on Android 8, kind of reeks, but it does work. Also, to the right of the paper clip will be an icon representing the most recently used attachment type, so if you have a bunch of photos to add to a note or notes, tapping that each time will take you directly to the photo dialog.
