error in installation
Dave-in-Decatur replied to kpat's topic in Evernote for Windows Issues (Versions 10.0 and above)
I only did sad emoji on your post because is not an option. Win7 is no longer updated for security. Turning off virus and threat protection (for whatever they're worth), you might as well search online for "make my computer a bot distributing illegal materials" and follow instructions. -
Stay with Plus plan or upgrade?? Legacy or v10??
Dave-in-Decatur replied to karmalg's topic in Evernote General Discussions
The v. 10 Home page has a number of widgets that you can add and customize in various ways to make it work for you as a launching pad. Definitely worth the time to explore and work on. -
Photo Upload Disabled
Dave-in-Decatur replied to Display Name Not Needed.'s topic in Evernote General Discussions
Never thought of adding a profile pic to my Evernote account, but just tried it and succeeded in literally 1 minute. I did have to pick one that was <700KB, and then use the crop tool, but it was no problem. As others have asked, please give details of where the problem is occurring. -
Stay with Plus plan or upgrade?? Legacy or v10??
Dave-in-Decatur replied to karmalg's topic in Evernote General Discussions
Hi, and welcome to the forums. You're right that if you upgrade to Personal, there's no downgrade path back to Plus. AFAIK, there is no correlation between plan types and Evernote versions. But if you want tasks and the integration with Google calendar, I don't think they are possible in Legacy. There is a bit of a learning curve going from Legacy to v. 10, but I didn't find it overly burdensome. What I did was use the v. 10 Web client (available on any plan) until I got a computer that v. 10 would run on, and I got accustomed to the interface that way. I've found it to be worth the effort in terms of things that work better (or at all) in v. 10 (even though I don't yet do much with tasks and calendar integration). Ultimately only you can tell whether you'll find enough value in the Personal plan to justify the greater cost. But if you're wanting to make Evernote more central, you may find particular value in the ability to search attachments, access note history, and use the Home page (in v. 10, if you go that way) as a central base. -
Hi, and welcome to the forums and to Evernote. Lots of people expect to be able to do a hierarchical system of notebooks and subnotebooks in Evernote, like the folders and subfolders in the Windows filing system. I would like it myself. But alas, that's not how Evernote is designed. You've discovered stacks and their limitations already. People who really want a hierarchical system generally use tags and subtags, I believe. I don't, but I imagine that a tag enthusiast will be along shortly to show you how.

Searching Notes by specific Date for Every year
Dave-in-Decatur replied to rlavie's topic in Evernote General Discussions
Hi, and welcome to the forums. If I were doing this, I'd definitely use tags. It would be simple to create a tag for each required date, then just go to the tag and see the list of notes from each individual year. But I don't know how you could automate is so that notes for each particular date show up on that date. But patience ... if it can be done, someone here will know how to do it! -
Hi, and welcome to the forums. Please look around them a bit, for instance at these threads: https://discussion.evernote.com/forums/topic/143224-javascript-error-since-last-update/ https://discussion.evernote.com/forums/topic/143243-latest-update-broke-evernote/ https://discussion.evernote.com/forums/topic/143291-is-official-evernote-no-longer-works-under-windows-7/

As discussed at length in these threads, and maybe others: https://discussion.evernote.com/forums/topic/143224-javascript-error-since-last-update/ https://discussion.evernote.com/forums/topic/143243-latest-update-broke-evernote/ https://discussion.evernote.com/forums/topic/143291-is-official-evernote-no-longer-works-under-windows-7/ -
Well ... "the management" seldom looks in on this forum (if ever), and you would need to send them some feedback to make this request. You can always ask. If you have a paid subscription, go to https://help.evernote.com/hc/en-us/requests/new. If not, go to the Web client, click on your account name, then click Share feedback in the drop-down dialog. AFAIK, Evernote has not said that they will discontinue the Legacy version, nor that they will continue to let it interact with their server databases forever. We who still use it are kind of guessing; I liked it, but now that I've gotten used to v. 10 I actually like it much better, and plan to discontinue using v. 6 in the near future. It is possible to back up the local database from v. 10; there are threads in the forum discussing it, if that's what's holding you back.

Help - just lost 2 years worth of notes
Dave-in-Decatur replied to Marcus Castillo's topic in Evernote General Discussions
Hi, and welcome to the forums. These are primarily user-to-user forums, so we're not able to help you recover notes directly. A couple of suggestions, though, if you haven't tried them already: Have you checked the Evernote Web client in a browser to see whether the notes are still there? That would show whether they have in fact been lost from your account, or are just not showing up for some reason in the Mac desktop program. If they're present in the Web client but not the desktop, then I'd suggest doing a thorough uninstall, including removing the database, which may be corrupted. I'm not a Mac user, so someone else here would have to tell you how to do that. Secondly, are all your notes gone, or just notes from the last two years? IOW, are notes more than two years old present and accessible? If everything is gone, is there any chance that you logged in to the upgraded app using the wrong credentials (such as a different email address)? That would create a brand-new, empty account using the different credentials. Simplest check is to log out, then log back in, being careful to use your correct Evernote credentials. But if there are notes present from longer than two years ago, then something else is wrong. Apologies if you've already tried all this. At that point, it would be necessary to contact Evernote support: https://help.evernote.com/hc/en-us/requests/new. If you make this an Account issue, you should be able to get support whether you have a paid subscription or not. -
@d0d, I just experimented with this, and I can see what you mean. The sidebar scrollbar seems to have too much overlap with the width control, and the result is a narrow operating space. The scrollbars in EN are narrower than those in Edge browser and in Acrobat reader, but the same width as in TextMaker (a Word alternative). So I'm inclined to see this as a choice made among options in an interface programming tool (speaking on the basis of my nonexistent programming experience). I guess my responses are: (1) If EN had chosen the wide toolbars instead, there'd be a big thread here from people complaining about the loss of precious screen space to a stupid fat scrollbar. (2) I use a mouse wheel or the scrolling function on my laptop's trackpad instead of clicking and grabbing on scrollbars--wouldn't that be a simpler alternative to moving to another platform?

This kind of reply from tech support is fairly common from all kinds of software and services, in my experience. They are required to follow a script. (And remember, in this day and age tech support is a job that no one would do if they had any other choices.) The script apparently starts with "Do not read the request in detail. Get a general sense of it from the subject line and then tell them how to do what's not working." Which, of course, I have already tried two or three times. How this is considered time efficient by the people paying the support staff is beyond me. But perhaps there are enough people whose internal script starts with "Do not read the directions. Try to make it work the way you wish it would work." that an initial support approach of RT*M pays off. So, yeah, just venting. Nothing to see here.

ToDo-notes vs tasks vs calendar
Dave-in-Decatur replied to BosseJ's topic in Evernote General Discussions
Yes, I've saved this thread to my Evernote note on learning to use Tasks, once I decide to plunge into them. As they say, there are no dumb questions! -
Shortcut doesn't work (Desktop/Mac)
Dave-in-Decatur replied to BosseJ's topic in Evernote General Discussions
Very strange that some shortcuts can be edited and others cannot. In this case, it plays out as another example of Evernote's inattention to non-US-English users. -
Using Evernote Mobile on Samsung A7 telephone.

Search the forums for Evernote Android slow: there's a thread with that in the title that has lots of discussion regarding slow experiences with the new Evernote on Android, specific devices, etc. -
Can not access to billing page
Dave-in-Decatur replied to louisng's topic in Evernote General Discussions
Hi, @louisng, and welcome to the forums. That page looks quite a bit different from what I see. Perhaps it is due to my US location, I don't know. Below I have pasted in what I see. To be certain you're actually at the Evernote billing page, use this link: https://www.evernote.com/BillyBillingProfile.action. -
Apologies if I've been obtuse about this, or maybe just over-reading your remarks. Honestly, some of my obtuseness may be generational. I'm older (I surmise), and don't use social media (for reasons that have nothing to do with age). It doesn't occur to me that anyone would be interested in hearing about my system and process apart from some ongoing discussion about systems and processes, or my offering a recommendation. So I will give you one free "OK, boomer" on this.

The system-of-tools internal discussion is one I'm familiar with. I've got 3 that I use together. Evernote is great for gathering research and creating initial formulations of ideas, especially at random times when something I'm reading or thinking about stimulates ideas about a different project. When I want to shape the research materials and ideas into a structure and craft the relationships among them, I use Scrivener. It leans a bit toward fiction writers, but is highly usable for nonfiction. It is not as usable across multiple platforms as Evernote, but can give vastly more structure than EN. For actually drafting and polishing a text I use Nota Bene, which is a superior multilingual word processor that incorporates formatting and bibliographical tools designed for academic and other nonfiction writing. But Nota Bene has its own system for storing, indexing, and retrieving research information, which is very fast and precise, and its own tools for structuring. I'm still working on how best to move info from EN to Scrivener to NB in each instance. NB also lacks EN's cross-platform and in-the-moment capture capabilities. Its structuring tools are less sophisticated than Scrivener's, but I would not dream of doing high-end writing, esp. academic writing, in Scrivener rather than Nota Bene. So it's a kind of ecology that does repay attention to how the tools interact, and how materials behave in each one. Each of these three is a complex enough system on its own, and frankly I think figuring out the best plan of work keeps my wits sharp. But the idea that I occasionally see in these forums of using Evernote as the one-and-only strikes me as taking "leanness" to an impractical extreme.
