  1. The comments I have posted about OneNote are for OneNote Mac. It appears that OneNote Win has many more features. For example: macrosaddinscustom styles (like MS Word)TemplatesSort Everything by AnythingHere is a great addin: Onetastic is a free multi-purpose addin for Microsoft OneNote 2010 and 2013 See more at: http://www.omeratay.com/onetastic/#sthash.FRufUidr.dpuf IMO, having macros and templates is HUGE. There is so much one can do with these to customize and make your work more productive. I have read comments from the MS OneNote team that they are hard at work on the Mac client, and plan soon to add more features to it. As I posted above, MS has made a strong committment to cross-platform.
  2. GM. we're clearly on the same page here: Better, more flexible, encryption is a feature that is well within Evernote's grasp. For example, adding optional encryption on a per Notebook basis. Failed security is in the news almost ever day. Having proper security for their data is rapidly becoming understood and required by more and more people. IMO, Libin needs to forget about replacing MS Office, and focus on making Evernote the #1 guerrilla of information (personal and business) managers.
  3. Sentinel, thanks for sharing. EagleFiler looks impressive. How long have you been using it? Would you mind posting a brief pros/cons comparison with Evernote when you have time? From what I can see the biggest drawback is cross-platform capability. Looks like it runs only on Macs. For me, I'd need it to have an iOS client as well.
  4. Just found and viewed this very good video intro/tutorial to OneNote: OneNote Tutorial by PCClassesOnline.com (YouTube) I highly recommend it. I found it to be the quickest way to get a basic understanding of OneNote, including its structure of Notebooks > Sections > Pages Two Key Differences between Evernote and OneNote: Web Clipping EN is much better, providing many options, clips text of full page, article, simplfied article, and selection ON clips ONLY an image of the full page -- no options to clip web page text Tags EN is much better, allowing you to easily create, select, and SEARCH on tags. ON has a preset selection of tags, but Tags are NOT searchable!!! EDIT: For comparison, here is the Evernote Tutorial by PCClassesOnline
  5. Well, to me sync is like save, it can and must be bullet proof. I'm not saying it is not hard, but that it must be designed and implemented right. Syncing of data and files has been around for decades. Problems, errors, user errors, can and will happen. The key is having a system that recognizes when it is out of sync, and offers tools to the user to correct. It seems to me that every time an EN client does a sync it should at least compare the client's note count with that of the EN Service/Cloud, and take appropriate action if they are different.
  6. I had some sync issues with 2 of my Macs and iPhone 5 a couple of weeks ago. After a delete and reinstall of Evernote on my iPhone, all devices are now in sync, reporting the same number of Notes as EN Web: 11,016. But I am dismayed and appalled at the number of sync issues being reported in these forums on a daily basis. Maybe some are due to "user error", but there are too many to discount all of them. IAC, a well-designed and implemented system should, IMO, greatly minimize the possibility of user error. I've also been using DropBox as long as I've been using Evernote, and I've never had a sync error/issue with DropBox. I have had it installed on 3 Macs, 1 Win PC, 1 iPhone 5, and 1 iPad Mini. No issues.
  7. Great article Alan. Thanks for sharing. From my perspective, the main benefit of Evernote has long been that it's available on almost all platforms. Looks like Microsoft is going after cross-platform and improved sync as major thrusts: Evernote sync used to be rock solid, but for the last few months that have been many reports of sync issues. I have experienced two sync issues (Mac and iOS). If MS gets it right, it could mean real trouble for Evernote.
  8. OneNote for Mac and iOS Users I just ran across this MacWorld article which you might find useful: Microsoft OneNote embraces Mac and iOS users with a raft of new features, Jul 30, 2014 Combined with the new DropBox Pro (1TB for $10/mo), this might be a better solution than Evernote for some users. The great thing about DropBox for Mac users is that you can use Spotlight to search the DropBox folders/files for both file attributes and content.
  9. Recent IOS versions work quite quickly, just an FYI. Evernote works fine (speed-wise) for me on both my iPhone 5 and iPad Mini. I have over 10K Notes, but I think JB has many more.
  10. As opposed to stuff that happened in the future? Could be. Have you seen the Fringe TV Series? They have "Observers" who can see throughout all time, with it's many possible variations. I've been watching it for the first time on Netflix. Fantastic show. Sorry for the off-topic post.
  11. I'd say that OneNote is a strong candidate. I've noticed a number of long-time Evernote users have also been using OneNote and/or are in the process of switching to it. It's on my testing to-do list. It's free, so you could download it and give it a try. Now available on Win, Mac, iOS, and of course all the MS platforms.
  12. @HuggyTheBear, I'm not sure if you intended it this way, but your post brought a smile to my face. A little humor goes a long way.
  13. Well said, cwb. I agree completely. I especially like your last point: It's a fair point for posters new and seasoned alike... If you don't know, don't say. Keeps the signal to noise ratio down.
  14. Scott, maybe you're looking at a different version, but EN iPhone 7.4.2 on my iPhone 5 shows the following options under Settings > Premium > Offline Notebooks: Do Not Download NotesDownload All NotesDownload Selected Notebooks
  15. But, isn't that just the problem. The elephant is supposed to never forget! EN should be a solid, mature app/system, and a solid mature system simply doesn't have these problems. Well said, John. I couldn't agree more. I am appalled at the number of posts of sync issues that I am seeing every day.
  16. I feel your pain. Sorry to hear that Evernote failed you at a critical moment. I have often used Evernote iOS for the same purpose. By now, you've probably already thought of this, but when I am going to depend on Evernote to show critical information (like an online ticket, sales receipt, etc), I make sure before I leave home that I can see the proper Note in Evernote. As you can see from the many posts in these forums, Evernote (all platforms) seems to exhibit strange behavior for some users. I don't know what caused your problem, but I have learned to verify my Notes entered into Evernote shortly after entering them. I almost always do a manual sync after entering a new Note or making changes to a Note. If I have entered a number of notes using EN Mac, I sync EN Mac and then make sure they show up in EN iPhone before I go out. Hope this helps.
  17. Agreed. A COPY from an Evernote Note (from any client) should provide fully compatible HTML5 code to the clipboard. Evernote Team: Don't you find it embarrassing that a COPY from an Evernote note and a PASTE to THIS Evernote forum does NOT work very well ???
  18. Phils, TuskTools Treeliner is a GREAT tool. I strongly encourage everyone to view the excellent YouTube video if you have any interest in outliners or hierarchy. For those of you who don't think hierarchical systems add any value, I challenge you to watch this video. It might just open your eyes to a great new way of organizing. I should mention that it integrates tightly with Evernote. Phils, I'd love to see a Mac version. Any chance of one being available any time soon? Finally, ATTN Evernote Designers. You should view this video to see an excellent, powerful, yet simple way to construct complex boolean searches.
  19. For any EN Mac lurkers watching this thread, it is CTRL+CMD+H on the Mac. Evernote really needs to provide a shortcut for EN Win, maybe CTRL+WIN+H ???
  20. Dave, I think you make a sound argument for Evernote to strongly consider providing sub-notebooks. It is very clear and obvious to most that when you say "After all, the customer is supposed to be king???" you are NOT just talking about yourself, but the many, many customers who have for years requested sub-notebooks. Companies who continue to ignore the needs of large blocks of their customers run the risk of going out of business. Word Perfect and Blackberry are two examples that come to mind. The sleeping giant Microsoft seems to be waking up with respect to Note taking/capturing/organization with its OneNote app. They have recently begin making it available on more platforms/devices, and improving its capability. And, like Evernote, they have started making some versions FREE. Just look at what Microsoft did to Netscape Navigator. I was also once a huge WordPerfect fan, until they failed to adopt the GUI of Mac, then Windows. So while today I prefer Evernote to OneNote, that might change in the future. It just depends. Furthermore, Evernote has CHANGED ITS MIND on several major features. The best example is the Business version of Evernote. After years of saying they wanted nothing to do with creating/supporting a "business" version, they have done just that. The way I see it, understanding the need and value of organizing and viewing information in a hierarchical manner is something that is very obvious to some people, and, apparently, does not register with others. That's fine. No one who asks for sub-notebooks is trying to force anyone to use that method of organization. But there are others who don't seem to understand its value that continue relentlessly to argue against Evernote providing sub-notebooks. Frankly, I just ignore this segment and continue on. So, I continue to urge those who would like to have sub-notebooks in Evernote to continue asking for that feature. There is no harm in asking, and maybe someday Evernote will provide it.
  21. It's interesting. The thumbnail in the Snippet view was the BIG thing Evernote promoted when the Snippet view was released, quite some time ago. But the problem is that their algorithm often doesn't select what the user would have selected to represent the Note. Even Evernote/emerick admitted it's shortcomings: The problem is when the Evernote algorithm chooses an image that has nothing to do with the Note -- this is actually misleading and may cause the user to skip over that Note when he/she is visually scanning for a certain Note. IOW, the thumbnail is supposed to HELP us find the Note we want, but in some cases, about 30-40% of my cases, it actually misdirects/misleads us. That's why allowing the user to do a simple right-click on the image and select "Choose thumbnail" would be so great!
  22. You can't exclude NB from a Search, but you can exclude Tags. So, as a work-around, you could assign a Tag to all Notes in the NB you want to exclude. The Tag Name could even be the same as the NB Name. Let's say the NB name is "Personal". So you create a Tag named "Personal", and assign to all Notes in the Personal NB. Then you could so a Search like this: "-tag:Personal" and whatever other Search terms you'd like.
  23. While that will work, it's a bit laborious. For those that need to do this often or want a simpler method, see: Copy file or folder path to the clipboard in Mac OS X Lion I use this and it works well.
