  1. My observation is that EN is neither Win- nor Mac-centric. Over time, first one platform, then the other, pulls ahead. I remember that EN Win had several important features, like Left (Vertical) List View, Assign Tags (CTRL-ALT-Z), for quite some time before being implemented in EN Mac. In fact, the Assign Tags feature is still not in EN Mac. And, there are still a number of EN Win options that can be set by Registry changes that are not available to EN Mac.
  2. @Metrodon: Point taken. A number of new features in Ver 5.6. So, maybe you're right: Doesn't look good for sorting text. Don't really understand this though. I've written web pages (decades ago) that provide dynamic sorting of text. It's really not that hard.
  3. I'm not sure the first version of a re-write is a good indicator. I think the main objective was to just reproduce the feature set with new code. Has anyone seen new features in EN Mac 5.6.x?
  4. Another approach is to create separate Evernote accounts, one for personal, one for work. Then you could share from your personal account only those Notebooks you want to share with your work account. Of course, while at work, you could use the EN Web client to access your personal account.
  5. About the best you can do is to create Local Notebooks on the computer where you want the Notes to reside. Local NBs are available only for EN Win and EN Mac. Local NBs are NOT sync'd by design, so they won't show up anywhere else. If you use Local NBs, be sure that you have an active, frequent backup system to protect them.
  6. I completely understand your frustration. Sync can, and must be, absolutely accurate and bullet proof. Issues with sync have been reported a lot recently, and one can only hope that Evernote is hard at work on solving it. Having said that, I have developed a habit that helps me avoid 99% of sync issues: Manually sync, and sync often. Don't rely on the autosync. Always manually sync after: Entry/Edit of an important Note The end of each session The end of each day You're finished with one device, and want to switch to another device You first start using another device For important work, view the Notes on the other device to make sure all Notes are sync'd Backup important and hard-to-replace Notes. Go to File > Export to export as an ENEX archive file. Make sure you have an active, frequent Backup system always running (at least once a day, hourly if possible) I use Time Machine on the Mac for hourly backups of changes A lot of people use the online backups like Carbonite and CrashPlan I know it may sound/look like a lot of work, but once you get into the habit of doing this stuff, it becomes automatic, second nature. You may want to give this a try before you throw in the towel with Evernote. You can also do a one-month upgrade to Premium account ($5) so that you can get full Evernote Support to help you resolve your sync issues.
  7. Looks like have have current versions Evernote -- that's good. Unfortunately, the Free account does NOT provide the "Note Version History". That might have helped. EDIT: 2016-12-02 3:36 PM CT Fortunately, you can upgrade to Premium (for only 1 month if you so choose), and then "Note Version History" will be available, even for Notes changed prior to the upgrade. Since you say your EN Win Notes apparently didn't sync to the EN Cloud, the only possibility of recovering those Notes is on your local system. Do you have a backup of the EN DB on your Win machine after you created the Notes, but before they were overwritten? If you don't have a backup, sorry to say, but I think you are SOL, unless someone else can jump in here with a brilliant solution.
  8. Need more info to help you: What is your desktop platform, and what OS ver? What is your mobile device, and what OS ver? What versions of Evernote are you running on each? Do you have a Free, Premium, or Business Evernote account?
  9. I don't see the point in posting multiple quotes of what has already been said in this thread. It's a real waste of space and just clutters the thread. What's more, it doesn't change any of the other posters view. There's nothing wrong with people continuing to express their need for sorting. Who knows, if CUSTOMERS continue to complain and request this feature, Evernote may someday see the light!
  10. The way I view and use Evernote is this: Don't put anything unencrypted into Evernote that I consider sensitive. For sensitive documents I want in Evernote, I encrypt them first (like PDFs) Many PDF tools offer 128-bit encryption Adobe Acrobat X (and later) and other tools also offer 256-bit encryption, but you won't be able to view the PDFs inline. Finally, I am in the process of evaluating Wuala which provides highly encrypted Cloud storage that also can sync to your local files like DropBox.
  11. Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse, it does. Check out the strong, adverse reaction to the new EN Web Beta. Thankfully, I rarely use the EN Web client.
  12. @Sqril: No worries. I know Evernote advertises its Business version as a collaboration tool, but, IMO, it's really not. I've seen lots of complaints about EN sharing. Recently there have also been lots of complaints about syncing. So I wouldn't go there. Confluence is only $10/mo for 10 users, so that seems like a very low, reasonable price to me. They have a free trial if you want to test it out.
  13. @Sqril: If you're looking for a good collaboration tool, there are several out there that are much better than either Evernote or OneNote. You can do a Google on "collaboration" to find lot's of choices & reviews. Here is one that I have NOT used, but has been highly recommended: Confluence
  14. For those of you who generate really large files, you'll be please to know that Microsoft OneDrive is here to help. Just received this announcement by email: Doesn't affect me. I don't have any files over a few hundred MB, much less 10GB! Most of my files are << 100MB
  15. I don't know why we haven't seen any posts from Evernote employees in this thread. I think it really leads to more and more misunderstandings and mistrust. At this point it seems that we are feeding on the negativity of one another. IAC, I wanted to share this post by EN employee Jackolicious, who now may be known as "The Cricket" Hey folks, cricket here: I'm glad to see this discussion in the Mac forum. Our power users are everything to us. We (the Evernote team) are all power users too. I have 5 digits worth of notes and was growing frustrated too. We are working on it. We just released Evernote for Mac 5.6. This could easily be called the biggest power-user release we've ever done. Our sync was completely rewritten from the ground up. We reduced the opportunity for crashes significantly (and if you do crash, our new crash reporting system ensures that we tackle the most frequent crashes before every release). Our note editor is brand new to handle old features better (like bulleted lists), new features (image resizing, table resizing), and features we can't even talk about yet! Search was rewritten to sort by relevance so that users with large numbers of notes get better results (not just more of them). I guess what I'm trying to say is: we're working on it. Making an awesome place to store your life's work is our life's work. Keep the discussion going. We love the feedback.
  16. I wouldn't want to encrypt the metadata, what you call "attributes". That way they could still be used in searches. My thought is that it would work just like the current text encryption. Everything is always encrypted on the Evernote Cloud. When you select a Notebook you would have an option to unencrypt -- perhaps by a button or right-click. You would enter the password for that Notebook, and when you select a Note in that NB, EN would unencrypt it, and it would stay unencrypted as long as your have EN open, or until you press a button. Could be the same button that acts like a toggle switch. When you sync, the EN client would encrypt the changed Notes before sending to the Cloud. The UI for this is clearly something that needs to be carefully thought through, tested internally, and tested with users for feedback before it is locked down.
  17. As I think you know, I'm fully aware that Wuala is not a PIM. My only point is that their mobile app is an example of implementing high security using zero knowledge keys. The point is that it can be done. Whether it is encrypting Note text or a file, the principle is the same. Evernote could encrypt the Note body while leaving the Note metadata unencrypted. This would permit good searching.
  18. Wuala has mobile apps. I'm with you on the midnight (and noon) oil !
  19. I am setting one up where alternatives can be discussed as well as tips & tricks for migrating to Onenote. I will share what I am learning. Anyone who is interested, please PM me. I will let you know when it's ready (won't be today - possibly tomorrow). To clarify, I am setting up an alternative site to discuss these issues freely, solely out of respect for the fact that this is the Evernote forum. I think it's in poor taste to discuss the finer details of leaving EN on their own message board. IMO, it's a bit like setting up a date with your new boyfriend while your old boyfriend is still in the room, packing up his stuff. EDIT: BTW, the forum I'm working on is also open to EN staff. I realize it's a bit of a conflict of interest. But maybe it's also something you'd find interesting/helpful, too. You're not prohibited from joining. I just don't want to utilize EN's resources to discuss this topic . I promise I won't let anyone flame you. It's up & running. If I missed sending you the URL, please let me know. Thanks BNF. Can you please post the URL here? If not, then a PM will be fine.
  20. Very interesting Their video is very good. Their pricing seems very reasonable: FREE for individual users/small groups, $10/mo for groups > 5. Collaboration seems to be their strong suit. While Evernote claims it provides "collaboration", it does NOT provide the collaboration that is generally accepted, that most users expect. Sharing is NOT collaboration, IMO. What is not clear is whether or not they have Win and Mac apps, or all is done via a web app. I have requested more info.
  21. I have Evernote open on my Mac all the time. I have not noticed any degradation in the performance of other apps while Evernote is running. Of course, this depends on your CPU and memory.
  22. Have you tried using the EN global shortcut key to create a new Note? This provides a EN Note in a separate window that allows you to enter Tags and Notebook. Seems like this would address most of your needs.
  23. Why? Seems to me that there are benefits to both Evernote and its users (us) to discuss the shortcomings of Evernote here. I think that most of us would prefer Evernote to fix the issues we have identified. If we hide our concerns/alternatives, then Evernote might be less motivated to make the necessary changes. There is a very old adage: You can't fix a problem until/unless you identify it and acknowledge it.
  24. Since it seems that we have focused on the security features/issues/concerns of alternate PIMs, I thought you might find this helpful. From The Best Cloud Storage Services that Protect Your Privacy, Jul 2013 I found this to be an excellent article that covers the following: The 5 Best Cloud services with encryption (including SpiderOak and Wuala and others)Cloud Storage Services that Don't Value Your PrivacyHow To Add a Second Layer of Encryption yourself to services like DropBox, Google, etcHow to setup you own private Cloud storage service Remember that MS OneNote uses MS OneDrive to store your Notes.
  25. Microsoft Contact for OneNote It looks like there may be a direct contact at Microsoft available for OneNote feedback. On the Onetastic for OneNote site I found this contact info:
