  1. In my limited testing, it appears that the preference setting is only respected for future notes, not past notes. You can change how past notes appear by clicking in the top bar of the previewed pdf and then selecting the "..." menu and from there selecting "Title." If you are still getting PDF previews with new notes and your global setting is set to "Title," then I would ask how are you inserting the PDF files into a note? I vaguely remember hearing about a bug that caused PDF preview images to appear when PDFs are inserted a certain way, and not when inserted another way. You might try a few different ways of inserting a PDF and seeing if that makes a difference. If none of that helps, I suggest you open a support ticket as you may have found a new bug.
  2. It's an interesting thought experiment. As a private company, EN doesn't have to be very transparent about users. My guess is 250m is the number of users who have ever had an account in the last decade+, and the number of active users (monthly active) is much, much, smaller, though impossible to accurately estimate. As for paying customers, this is much easier to estimate. Evernote has been rationalizing its pricing plans worldwide over the past couple of years. Low income countries can get Evernote for $20-$30, and high income countries pay $70 - $100, with those numbers reduced somewhat by student discounts, temporary 1-year promotions, and the remaining legacy plan subscribers (though those are renewing at significantly higher rates). By guestimating average revenue, Evernote probably has somewhere between 1.5 and 2.5 million paying subscribers, or less than 1% of the supposed 250 million figure. This would be an atrocious conversion rate by freemium product standards, especially considering that free users with unlimited storage undoubtedly cost them quite a bit of money. However, if the actual number of Monthly Active Users (MAUs) is only 80 million or so, then 2 million paying subscribers works out to about a 2.5% conversion rate, which is more respectable (though still not fantastic). All this to say I expect additional restrictions / curtailments to Free accounts over the next year to help push frequent Free users to upgrade to Premium.
  3. While I hope you're right, I tend to believe that it can always get worse, so we'll see. Fingers crossed.
  4. Layoffs are normal after an acquisition, it's the (apparent) magnitude of the layoffs that is concerning. I wonder how much debt BS took on to buy EN? It could be that they need to increase operating margin to service the new debt, just like Elon Musk has slashed expenses at Twitter to service the debt he took on as part of that acquisition. Let's hope Evernote doesn't go the way of Twitter - where software development has practically ground to a halt since the acquisition and which has increasingly experienced glitches, small outages, and overall service degradation.
  5. The layoff announcements continue on LinkedIn. Heavily skewed to software developers, QA, and other product people over the last couple of days. They include Geoff Barry, whom I don't know, but whose posts announcing a new desktop release I always read religiously. Some people on Blind (an anonymous app for Tech people to chat about the industry) are claiming that the three rounds of layoffs total 50% or more of EN staff. I don't know whether that's true or whether that's exaggerated, but clearly the cuts run deep. There continue to be no open positions posted on the EN website, so it's not just a question of Bending Spoons wanting to trim certain skills and hire in others. I'm beginning to get concerned that the primary focus on BS will be on monetizing their acquisition, not on improving the product. And that makes me sad.
  6. At the beginning of last year Ian Small indicated that the new sync architecture should arrive in 2022, so yes, it's late. He's actually been hinting at it for at least a couple of years now, so clearly it's been technically very challenging. Hopefully the engineers working on it were not adversely affected by the recent layoffs (though I imagine even if not directly affected, having many friends and colleagues laid off can't be good for productivity in the near-term.)
  7. I agree there could have been more communication, but it doesn't necessarily imply such a dire attitude towards customers. I've been through similar corporate upheavals before, and even when well planned out, it's a very busy and often chaotic time. And remember Bending Spoons is (as far as I know) quite a small company who has never acquired anything the size of Evernote (in fact it wouldn't surprise me if Evernote was far bigger than BS in terms of number of employees at time of acquisition.) Not to mention the distance (physical / time zones / cultural) which makes things more challenging. This would be great. And it doesn't have to be very detailed to be reassuring. There's also all kinds of other communications which in the grand scheme of things don't tell us much, but which would make nervous users feel better, and ultimately I think that's what some of us need, some soothing of anxieties. For example, hypothetical reassuring communication from the BS CEO might cover some of these points: Tell us that the EN business unit is reporting directly to him, as it's the largest and most important unit in all of BS As a long-term user of Evernote, he is passionate about the product, yadda yadda yadda As such, he is 100% focused on Evernote's success, and is spending the majority of his time in the first half of 2023 in Redwood City, Austin, and Santiago, three of the cities where most of Evernote's employees live Though they've had to make some painful decisions, there is a strong leadership team in place at Evernote comprised of longterm Evernote employees and some experienced BS staff He's excited about Evernote's roadmap and the team has already started working on it. He can't wait to share more about his plans for Evernote next month As previously mentioned, the next major feature is real-time sync, which is on-track to launch publicly in Q2 (or insert rough date) Then next month, follow-up with another email about roadmap could be something like: Reassure users that there are no plans to remove existing / beloved features Reassure users that subscription prices will not change dramatically in the near-term (or rip the bandaid off and announce new pricing plans ASAP) As a long-time user of Evernote, not only is he passionate about the production, but he has a vision of what it could be. He wants to build on "remember everything, accomplish anything" by continuing to develop capabilities in this area (OR articulate another vision of what EN could be) He's going to leverage BS mobile expertise to e.g. improve mobile app capabilities, particularly on tablets He's going to open up beta testing opportunities for more users, so that the most passionate EN users can see features early in development and help shape them via their feedback He'll have more to say about this mid-year Etc. All hypothetical and just one example of a possible way to reassure users without (IMHO) unnecessarily creating competitive concerns by signaling future product direction in too much detail.
  8. Yes, that is expected, but there do seem to be a number of engineers laid off as well, among other technical roles. Time will tell whether this heralds a change in strategy / direction for EN or not. Based on what I've read, the technical cuts seem to be focused on just a couple of teams.
  9. Don't knock it 'till you've tried it. There wouldn't be ~700 votes for this feature (tied for second-most of unimplemented features and only about 50 votes behind the leader) if there wasn't significant interest. There are other forums which support both markdown codes and the common shortcuts Ctrl/Cmd-B, and I (and many others) find it easier to type the star codes when I know as I write that I want to emphasize a particular word. When editing after the fact, I do as you probably do, and use my mouse to double-click on a word or highlight a longer passage and then Cmd-B or Cmd-I. But in free-flow writing it's faster and less error-prone to use markdown for styling individual words for emphasis.
  10. I could see the utility of a fully markdown-compatible (or as close as possible) export. It would be a nice portability feature. I suppose this feature request could be split into three, rough order of feasibility / likelihood (as per my opinion at least): 1. (the most practical short-term IMO) of adding a few more markdown functions for bold/italics/underline 2. Adding the ability to export into markdown (as close as possible) to facilitate note portability 3. Updates to the editor to allow switching to a "markdown" mode
  11. Navigate in Chrome to chrome://extensions. Activate Developer mode in the top-right corner. Wait a moment (or two), and (possibly optional) refresh the page. At the top a bar should appear with an "Update" button. Click the button to update all extensions. I'm not aware of a way to update through the extension settings. An uninstall/reinstall probably works as well for anyone who doesn't want to muck around with the above settings (though it's really quite easy once you do it).
  12. I can reproduce this. I just forced an extension update to 7.30.2, and it's not yet fixed. I imagine this is a bug that will hopefully be ironed out quickly.
  13. Personally, I'm not looking for a complete markdown implementation. I agree that's impractical given the rich options that the Evernote editor supports. But just a few more markdown features would be welcome, similar to how Evernote already supports hash-marks to indicate header levels and backticks to start code blocks. Very high value to me and (presumably) easy tweaks would be seeing **bold** support and *italics* support. Markdown doesn't officially support underline, but I'd love Evernote to add underline support as well (perhaps _underline_). A bonus for me would be "> quote" support, though that would require Evernote to add support for quoting text, first!
  14. Welcome to the Mac! Command + ' jumps to the tag area at the bottom of a note. You should see a popup if you hover over the "add tag" button on the bottom-left of a note which helpfully reminds me whenever I forget. Also, use Command + / to see a list of all keyboard shortcuts. You can filter the shortcuts by typing in "tag" and see a list of potentially useful tag-related shortcuts.
  15. I like this idea. Is this actually useful or does it just make a pretty picture? I've seen these visual representations many times, and people gush about how cool they are (and they do look cool), but I've never seen someone actually demonstrate how they used it to accomplish something they couldn't do just as easily another way. I've also used software in the past which created similar graphs (network software, for example) and didn't find it very useful then, either.
  16. Also experiencing this folks, and it started with the most recent update. Don't have time to do a full reinstall right now, so we'll see if EN pushes a patch before I get sick of it and wipe the app.
  17. As I mentioned in another thread, related to the widget functionality but not exactly the same, the ability to create new notes and other quick items by long pressing on the app icon still hasn't been reimplemented. Shame, because it's one of my favorite mobile features.
  18. It's missing. And for me personally, it's also STILL missing my personal favorite way to create a new note, long-pressing on the launcher icon (which was supported by the old Android app, to be clear). 😟
  19. He's definitely very sour on Evernote and doesn't fully explore or explain the linking capabilities. That said, I totally agree with him with respect to no tagging improvements, and especially: EN's inability to perform inline actions e.g. using @ signs or [[ brackets. MANY productivity apps have implemented something along these lines using one of those two conventions, and Evernote still not having done so is a big miss, IMHO. Still, while I find Evernote lacking in this respect (and in the poor sync, though that should be fixed soon, hopefully), I haven't found anything that replicates everything I do like about Evernote, so I'm still here, for the time being. Really, I want to hear more from the Bending Spoons CEO. He's supposedly a long-time EN user, and so he must have an opinion on areas he feels Evernote is lacking. I'm selfishly hoping he's a tags user and is aware of the growing @ and [[ convention in productivity software! 😂
  20. I have had issues clipping Gmail emails before, and I sympathize, it can be frustrating. I just went to test and it seems to be working for me (allowing me to choose which emails of a thread to clip), so I wonder if something else is going on with your config? Sometimes I have had temporary issues which resolve by reloading Gmail, or quitting and restarting the browser. Worth a try if you haven't already. I would also make sure you are running the latest version of Chrome, and perhaps consider trying another supported browser as well. FWIW, I am running Web Clipper 7.29.2, and Chrome 109.0.5414.87 (Official Build) (x86_64) for macOS.
  21. That's good news. Can we expect any significant performance improvements with respect to how quickly this local index updates? For example in the legacy client, I could be searching or filtering on a tag, and if I then web clip a page with that same tag, it would pop up in my filtered notes list almost instanteously. It was delightful. It provided immediate feedback that I had tagged something properly. With v10, it happens far too slowly to give that warm and fuzzy feeling.
  22. Do you find it strange they didn't keep him on for a bit for transition purposes? Nor give him a chance to say a public goodbye? Nor even mention him in the first public communication post-acquisition? For better or worse, he's been a very impactful CEO as far as Evernote staff and customers are concerned, signing off on and overseeing the complete re-write of the clients, launching the project for real-time sync improvements, and so on. I also noticed that Evernote listed several open positions on their "Careers" page as of the day the deal closed, and as of the next day they are all gone, and still gone. Like you said, not necessarily unexpected, but it does make me wonder whether the plan is to be in cost-cutting mode and not growth mode. Although I agree to an extent, there is a lot of planning that goes on before a deal closes. Often the high-level organization structure has been decided, whether a new CEO is being brought in, whether a President or GM will be appointed who will report to the Bending Spoons CEO, whether there will be a temporary leadership appointed to usher in the integration of the company, and so on. None of that has been communicated, at least not publicly. Also, it's my sense that should the acquiring company have plans that would be eagerly received by its customer base, that they would discuss those in a more specific way than the very vague initial communication from Bending Spoons. Could be nothing, but it does make me wonder...
  23. I hope they take their time with this change. I'm eager to enjoy the improved sync, but this is a massive change that could cause more issues than it solves, so I hope it's rock-solid before they release it. That said, if anyone from Evernote is reading, I'm willing to beta test if Evernote wants to expand the current test group.
  24. Which is somewhat to be expected. Obsidian, Roam research, and others have been polishing this feature for quite a while now, so I'm not expecting Evernote to hit a home run on the first release. I do hope it's a very solid first pass, though.
  25. It's active on the Android version that I just received today. For what it's worth. Edit: and I can't test it because it requires a paid subscription. I'll wait to see some folks give it informal reviews. If it works decently, it might actually nudge me back into a paying user. I do really want some of those Android fixes I've been clamoring about for years, though... Fixing those as well would definitely get me to subscribe once again.
