Tawmiswithaw 2 Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 I can no longer link between notes on my desktop. When I try, I click on the link and it now takes me to my browser rather than the note in my evernote app. Help! What happened! I need this for work...
Level 5 Adjusting 276 Posted March 31, 2014 Level 5 Posted March 31, 2014 That helps a little to explain things, though I guess I am still a little unclear about what classic means in this context. This is probably because I didn't do a whole lot beyond copy/pasting note links (I thought this was "classic," but it seems to work the same way as always for me). Note links have changed slightly recently. Here’s how they should work:- When you paste a note link into Evernote, it should work the same way note links always have and take you directly to your note without leaving the Evernote client.- When you paste a note link outside of Evernote, clicking on it should take you to your browser which, once you log in, will take back to the Evernote client. The reason for this is that you can now paste a note link into a Word document (for example), and give that Word document to someone else. If the linked note has already been shared with that other person, then it just gets opened in their client, otherwise it allows them to ask you to share it with them. What I described above are the new note links.Classic note links work the way note links previously did.If you just copy and paste within the Evernote client, you won’t see a difference between regular and classic note links. Paste into another app and you’ll see the difference.
Level 5* GrumpyMonkey 4,320 Posted March 31, 2014 Level 5* Posted March 31, 2014 I just re-installed the client using the dmg from evernote.com and I'm still not seeing the "classic note link" option. Very strange. I don't see it either. However, after right-clicking, if you press the option key, it'll appear. My guess is that the screenshot posted earlier is actually from a beta of some kind, because it doesn't make sense that we'd be running the same app (5.5.1 (402628 Direct)) and be seeing different stuff. Even with the option key pressed, I don't see the shortcut. Weird. And, to Evernote, I'd say this is not a good idea. It was already confusing enough to explain as a Share URL and Note Link. Now, we have a classic note link? How are new people supposed to know what that means? In addition, when I copy a note link and use command + k to paste it for selected text, the resulting note link is blue, even though it is a regular internal note link. Perhaps I missed something above in the thread, but this doesn't make sense to me. It ought to be green, right? Thank you Thank you! After over a week, I finally have a solution to my problem! Furthermore, I totally agree that this is a very strange choice by Evernote... I don't know how this could be advantageous to anyone. By the way, I am the original poster of this topic; had to delete my old account - long story. I'm glad I could help. As with many new things, there are bound to be bumps in the road. Personally, I am unclear about the difference among note links, classic note links (that are kind of there, but now kind of hidden from everyone too), and share urls. Why not come up with a naming scheme that better explains the functions? At any rate, the classic note links thing needs some kind of explanation, I think. Internal note links, external note links, and shared note links? Just a thought. And, I am not sure if "external" note links accurately explains what is happening with the classical ones...

DavidR 5 Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 I use note linking all the time, and I love it. Or, at least, I love the way it USED to work. patnpm 30 Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 Just to clarify, as the original poster of the screenshot I'm running the vanilla non app store evernote 5.5.1 402628 direct the classic note link option appears whether I alt right click or ordinary right click, no difference.
Tawmis 1 Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 The way I used to use links was this:1. right click on a note2. scroll down to, "copy note link"3. Highlight text in new note4. right click and scroll down to "link" --> "add link"5. In the box that would open, I would "Cmd-V" Perhaps a bit of an over-complicated way to do it, and I have been using the method where you simply paste the link into the note, but I like to be able to give it the title I want. I do not always want the title of the note I am linking to. I have sufficient information to work around the issue; but I though I would explain things. Thanks again Grumpymonkey. Tawmis.

Jasp 5 Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 I've got something similar going on. (v 5.5.1 402628 Direct on Mavericks, since you ask) If I right click a link and select 'Copy Note Link' and paste it into an Evernote, as is, I get the link I want which works within the EN desktop client and the text is the name of the destination EN. The link looks like this: evernote:///view/..... BLAH But if I use the link in some text in the second EN, I get an HTTP link (https://www.evernote.com/shard/....BLAH)%C2'> which opens up my browser rather than in the EN desktop client.

Not sure what youmean when you are saying "in the second EN". Do you mean, if you paste the same note link a second time, it gives you https://? There has been a bug where pasting a note link into the cmd-k menu (to add a URL to text) would paste an http:// link even though it should be pasting evernote:///. Is that what you are referring to? If so, this has apparently been resolved in the latest 5.6.0 public beta which you can update to now if you'd like, and should be released as a stable release fairly soon.
marlacparker 3 Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 Thanks for this thread. I thought I was going crazy, not being able to rediscover how I made green links in EN to other notes without going through a browser. I had not done this for months, so missed the changes. To summarize, using source = the note where I want the green link, target = the note I should get to by clicking on the green link, what works for me now in EN 5.5.1 (402628 Direct) on OS X 10.9.3 (13D65) is either of these two actions:open my source note in a second window, drag my target note to the source, I get a nice green link with the text set to the title of my target note, which is fine. ctl-opt-click on target note to see Copy Classic Note Link on the menu, pick that, go to source link, paste, I get the same green linkI can edit the text of the green link by moving the cursor with the arrow keys and typing inside the word (not on either end, that wont work) and then deleting the original letters once I have the text that I want. I never noticed this behavior before but it might be standard os x behavior: if you ctl-click once, and let go, the floating menu stays up. You can then repeatedly press/unpress the opt key to see the menuitem change between Copy Note Link and Copy Classic Note Link.
jwood86 0 Posted August 15, 2014 Posted August 15, 2014 Just to add my experience (and thank you to OP and helpful replies so far on this thread): I used to be able to right-click "copy note link" and it would give me a "evernote:///view/" type of link which opens the corresponding note within the desktop client (mac evernote 5.5.1) Now, if i follow the same procedure it creates a "https://www.evernote.com/shard/" type of link which opens in my browser by default (very annoying) Thanks to the help of some of the replies to this post, I've found that I can opt-right-click "copy classic note link" which gives me the "evernote:///view/" type of link which is what I like. Annoying that it took me about 30 minutes of troubleshooting, and another 15 min of reading through half of this thread to figure that out, but alas - all's well that ends well, I guess. I agree with the replies saying that this particular feature is very nice, but it's verbiage and implementation could be somewhat more clear. Keep up the great work and thanks for the help, y'all!
Tawmiswithaw 2 Posted March 28, 2014 Author Posted March 28, 2014 Now, none of that explains why it’s not working for you.I’m trying this on the exact same setup as you and it’s working fine. When you paste a note link into Evernote, is the link showing up blue or green? Are you using any third party extensions that might be interacting with the copy or paste operations? The link is showing up blue, like it always does.I am putting in the link the same way I always have done it. I'm not sure how a 3rd party extension would work its way in there. I found out part of the problem. I found that I had two Evernote accounts, and that was messing with things. I only have one now. Now, it zips me over to my browser, recognizes my preference to have the note opened in the Evernote app, and then brings me to the main Evernote app, and opens the note I linked to in a completely different windowThis will not work for the way I am using Evernote. I have a single note open on a 2nd monitor, and I need to be able to go back and for between links quickly. The way it does it now, it completely upsets the task I am working on, which has made me go back to pen and paper for the last 3 days. I hope this will be dealt with by early next week!
Beeber 2 Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 I'm having the same problem. I'm not sure I understand your first sentence though. Notes on your desktop? Within the Evernote application or outside it? I have notes within the EN application with links to other notes within the application. I updated to the latest version of EN a few days ago. The links that existed before I updated will open the linked notes in the EN application. New links that I've added since the update now open my browser and take me to my Evernote account on Evernote.com. I have a ticket opened for this but so far their only suggestion was to delete and reinstall EN. That didn't work. I found some information in this forum where back in January they changed the Windows client and this behavior happened with links pasted outside of the EN application (For example in a Pages document). There apparently you want a link to a web page. But the problem I'm experiencing is entirely within the Evernote application. I'm dead in the water with my project until this is resolved.

dedukes 1 Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 Hi, all. I'm also having the same problem. The link function has always worked fine for me until this morning. Before this morning it has always linked to a file within Evernote. Suddenly this morning when I copy a note's link I get a url pointed toward the file on Evernote's site. It's happened on several files, and I've made sure that I didn't inadvertently share the file (which in the past has generated web urls instead of internal links). Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this or what's going on? I'm using Version 5.5.1 (03/25/2014) build 402628 on OSX (Mavericks). I wonder if this started happening on release 5.5.1? Thanks!

I'm having exactly the same problem. It sounds like Tawmiswithaw does the same thing I do, which is to embed note links in text using the Command-K shortcut (mac). This as opposed to just pasting the note link, which will appear as the note title and be green. To rephrase it just in case I haven't explained myself properly, I can retrieve a note link (by right clicking and selecting "copy note link"). I can then either paste it directly into another note (where it will be green and display the title of the linked note) or I can highlight some text, and use CMD-K to embed it. For the former technique (when the link is green) the actual link will begin with this: "evernote:///view/". But when I embed the same link it is automatically reformatted to begin with: "https://www.evernote.com/shard/", which causes it to redirect to the browser. I know it will then redirect you back to the client, but it's rather inconvenient. I usually prefer to embed note links into the text of my choosing, so it would be greatly appreciated if you could fix this. Thanks!
Ross Catrow 0 Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Bummer! This breaks/mangles/complicates opening notes from other iOS apps.
patnpm 30 Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 If you ask it to produce a link from the menu Evernote will produce 2 types of link for you: 1) http:\\..... type links which will open in your browser and refer to the web client2) evernote:///view..... type links which will open in your evernote client, on your mac or iphone. Up until the recent update if you pressed the menu command 'copy note link' would give you a type 2 link which you could paste in other notes, or in other apps. NOW - 'copy note link' gives you a type 1 link. If you right click on a note, there are now 2 options, copy note link and copy classic note link. I presume this is meant to differentiate between type 1 and type 2 links, but it is buggy and produces the same type of link - sometimes type 1 and sometimes type 2. Hopefully they will sort this out in a new version. I hope that the prioritisation of type 1 links over type 2 links doesn't take hold. Type 1 links may help people who share a lot of notes. Type 2 links are absolutely crucial for how I use evernote, and without them I'd probably move to something else
patnpm 30 Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Forgot to add - the only way to make sure you get a type 2 link now is to drag a note into another note (or into itself) which gives you a green link. If you right click on that, select link and then select edit, it opens a mini window with the link which you can copy. So far for me since the update that has always been a type 2 link.

Type 2 links are absolutely crucial for how I use evernote, and without them I'd probably move to something else I'm using the Mac client (5.5.1) and I can't find any "classic note link" option. If I right click on a link I can only select "copy note link".

Marcus4 2 Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 I just re-installed the client using the dmg from evernote.com and I'm still not seeing the "classic note link" option. Very strange.
Idea
Tawmiswithaw 2
I can no longer link between notes on my desktop.
When I try, I click on the link and it now takes me to my browser rather than the note in my evernote app.
Help! What happened! I need this for work...
