Actually desktop EN (v6.25) does have an audio note option...

Yep but this is the legacy version. I'm comparing latest available versions of Evernote and Nimbus Note for each platform.

If Evernote 6.x had evolved in a proper way I wouldn't been even thinking about other software. Unfortunately they abandoned old Evernote philosophy, turn great program into useless *****, and above all they have absolutely no respect for the users. Not at all.

  2. I wonder what are your afterthoughts on Nimbus Note. I found it a great solid candidate to replace Evernote. It is not perfect, but in my opinion it looks and feels much better than EN v10. There are at least another thread about it, but i'd like to summarize differences.

These are just some pros/cons I have noticed after two days of using Nimbus (there are a lot more of course). I am using Pro version of Nimbus.

    Pros:

    • beautiful simple interface (apart from snippets view, see below)
    • much faster than Evernote (tested on macOS, ipadOS, iOS and Windows)
    • great easy-to-use editor (i my opinion way better than the one from EN)
    • nest folders (subfolders) for notes to any depth,
    • you can set colours to folders and notes (good way to highlight important items)
    • you can select any image from the note as a thumbnail preview
    • instant internal linking (just type "@" and search/select from pop-up menu - amazing!)
    • ability to provide internal link to any block within a note (what a great little thing!)
    • code block with language-specific colour highlighting
    • attachments for a note (not inside a note)
    • no keyboard shortcuts problems on Windows ;)
    • video and audio recording (on mobile devices)
    • workspace level (great for switching between i.e. home and work, up to 5 workspaces in Pro)
    • single attachment size up to 1GB
    • lots of tiny features (like captions for images, note preview when hover over internal link, etc.)

    Cons:

    • EN has way better snippets view (see below)
    • no annotations for images,
    • no annotations for PDF files,
    • no sketching / no pencil input support (I don't care about this issue since Notability is my app of choice for handwriting notes/sketches),
    • flat (non-hierarchical) tags,
    • no voice recording support on desktops (Windows/macOS) - edit: desktop EN doesn't have this feature either, my bad
    • no built-in player for voice and video recordings (they exist as attachments - m4a and mov respectively)
    • on mobile devices no instant search (and SERP is on another tab)
    • maybe I'm wrong but I can't find geolocation info (according to product info there should be "Notes Geotagging")
    • it seems to me that synchronisation is slower than in Evernote (but it might only be my case)

    Migration process:

    • pretty decent import (much more reliable than the import tool for OneNote)
    • missing thumbnail preview in snipets list (I had to manually select desired image in each note and set it as preview - which was pain in the...).

    Snippets view compare:

    1783744696_Screenshot2020-11-11at17_36_54.png.67f660b9403a64c76ea8ee2abb3aa1d4.png

    Nimbus:

While migrating from Evernote you can try Nimbus Pro for free for one month (which is great since free version is limited to 2x50 = 100 notes).

Maybe there are users on this forum who are using Nimbus for some time and can share some thoughts with us? As for now I am very happy with Nimbus - but maybe there are some deal-breaking disadvantages that I simply can't see right now.

    Can someone recommend other applications?

There are plenty of them, you might find this reddit thread very useful:

    So far I tried myself:

    • DEVONthink - unacceptable: no Windows/Android version, it is also way too complicated
    • Joplin - could be great, runs very fast, has Markdown support, but it has ugly snippets/notes list and it must be self hosted (which one might find as an advantage but still synchronisation is not so smooth like EN does)
    • KeepIt - unacceptable: no Windows/Android version
    • Nimbus Note - this one is very interesting because it brings experience very similar to Evernote; there are two missing features though: no annotations for images and no pencil input support (I don't care about the second issue since Notability is my app of choice for handwriting notes/sketches) - here I summarized my experiences: Evernote vs Nimbus Note - is it worth to switch to?
    • Notejoy - it is focused on teams rather than personal use
    • Notion - an "all-in-one workspace" not for people who wants only note-taking app (it is overcomplicated)
    • OneNote - too complicated (in my humble opinion), but it is a very polished stable software, well designed, feature reach, and if you have already Office 365 subscription - it is given you for free; currently I'm transferring all my notes to OeNote using this tool to test performance (it is very slow by the way).

I hope this give you a hint. Still you should install and try each of those programs yourself.

  4. I just installed new version 10.3.6. The overall performance on my MacBook Air is terrible. Horror, the horror.

The legacy version 6.25.2 was working very nice, scrolling through notes was smooth, images/thumbnails appear instantly. Now with v10 it looks like slow-motion joke. Everything appears with heavy lags. Needless to say that competition programs work much faster as well. I had no other option than to roll-back to legacy version.

What makes me really sad is that I don't believe they will be able to significantly improve performance in the future. They mess this up so badly that the only solution is to buy more powerful devices...

Why do you consider the Version 10 product "beautiful"

One might say that it is actually beautiful :) (and objectively speaking, it probably is -  it is certainly more consistent across platforms).  But I putted this adjective in quotes due to horrible bugs. I was forced to use legacy version as well (especially on Windows due to keyboard shortcut bug).

I have one serious problem with OneNote, unfortunately. The philosophy of the program. All those notebooks, tabs (sections), notes and notes inside notes (floating text-boxes) ;) This information architecture doesn't convince me at all. OneNote is much more polished and powerful, no doubt about it (especially "inside" the single note). But all I want is to make very simple notes (usually plain text, headings, lists, images and attachments). And I need powerful (instant!) search engine. OneNote is a giant combine harvester. And I need a bicycle. So far Evernote was my bicycle, but now it is completely broken (I can't use Windows when Evernote is running, i can't use pencil 2 on my iPad, etc). Owners and developers don't give a *****. Sad but true.

I was never convinced by OneNote. To complicated interface, especially desktop one, and too complicated note (all those floating text-boxes and other widgets - I always keep thing simple, one under another). What I love about Evernote is that I can collapse sidebar, and see only snippets on the left, and the content of a selected note on the other side. I don't have time for placing notes in certain stacks, stacks in notebooks etc. I keep all my notes in one gigantic notebook and rely entirely on search (and tags) because I don't like wasting time organizing things. But that is my way of using. This kind of user experience is impossible in OneNote (in my opinion).

On the other side - I have an Office 365 subscription and I will have (I think it is the best office workspace and I am using OneDrive cloud as my primary storage). So OneNote is in a certain sense "for free".

But I'm still looking for something else... I was thinking about DEVONthink, but I work on Windows as well and they don't offer win app :(

  8. Thanks for your reply @stocky2605 but I hardly believe that this is a performance issue. This is iPad Pro, only two years old, with Apple A12X Bionic onboard. Everything runs super fast (even Evernote itself).

My guess is that they mess something while implementing pencil interface. The best proof is the lack of support for Pencil 2 (double-tap does nothing).

Drawing with both pencil and finger is fast. But the line made by pencil is way too thin, and it is very very "shaky", uneven, not smooth enough (sometime barely visible).

I have no such problem with other apps (like Notes, Procreate, Notability, etc.).

  9.  @dicaetano my blind guess is that they want to make "similar experience"  to macOS (Apple Command+Backspace) 😂 This is so pathetic... @Mike P that's true 😂 they could end up with some Ctlr+Alt+Shift combo. That would be nice...

@Shane D. again and again: bring back preferences. Allow users to define desired shortcuts. But first of all:

    • never take control over system-wide shortcuts (like language modifiers)
    • don't change behavior of default Windows keys (like DEL!)
    • place all necessary commands in the menu with visible shortcut (why there is no "Delete note" command in "Note" menu?)

Why you don't follow any proper UX rules, any design principles?  How could anyone know that you changed the shortcut? It is Windows, not Mac.

I got an update to 10.3.6 today, but it doesn't fix the issue…

Don't be surprised - they didn't do anything about our problem.

    Here's what they did:

    • Issue where selecting a note in a stack or the trash required two clicks
    • Occasional issues with dragging large ENEX files to the note list
    • Miscellaneous bug fixes
    • Stability and performance improvements

Unfortunately lack of preferences/keybord-shortcut settings - which is a critical bug - was not included in "Miscellaneous bug fixes"... ( @Shane D. who cares about "note in stack" while we can not use Evernote entirely!).

Now I can't type capital “ś”, and it still doesn't work when Evernote is on the background

The thing that you can't type capital "Ś" is OK (it wasn't cover by this rule),  but AltGr+s should produce lower case "ś"

If this basic rule doesn't work for you - there must be some other issue :( I'm sorry that the AHK is not working in your case.

  11.  Hi @jnizniowski

    12 hours ago, jnizniowski said:

“Ś” works fine, “ś” works only when Evernote isn't running. If it's on, AltrGr + s is catched by Evernote for screen capturing.

That is very strange. Let's forget about capital "Ś" for a moment. Can you check what will happen if you put in your script file this rule:

    RAlt & s:: Send {Text}ś

Noting more, just this one line (let's be sure no other rules interfere with that one).

  12. New Evernote that I unfortunately installed yesterday (what a mistake!) is a nightmare...
It makes my primary way of interacting with iPad, which is pencil, totally useless:

    • drawing with pencil is a madness! It looks like the handwriting of someone with Parkinson's disease  (when I write something with finger - it looks OK) - see 01.jpg (and before you ask - pencil works perfectly well in other apps, it'a a bug in Evernote)
    • selecting tool (the razor) is almost invisible when used with pencil (I circled the word "Apple" - note one single blue dash) - 02.jpg and again working well with finger - 03.jpg
    • there is no object-selecting tool! No way to easily moving drawings (razor cuts objects! what the heck?!) - there should be two modes of such tool: 1) cutting, 2) selecting (there is one more nice-to-have feature - selection by just crossing other lines, or only when whole line/shape is outlined - the same way like in CorelDraw - but i guess it will be too much for you...)
    • now try to remove highlighting that you made over something else - only the highlighter path. Good luck... Or try to move highlighter path somewhere else. Good luck again...
    • double-tap on pencil doesn't work! (by default it should switch to eraser)
    • there are sill missing strokes (so no @AgnesP it is not fixed)

Why want you use standard solid reliable way of sketching interface - the same like in Notes?! It it almost perfect. You can't come up with anything better. Just copy the Apple interface.

@Shane D. how on Earth could you publish such a buggy version in the store?!

Few days ago I have upgraded Windows version. It is a total disaster (no preferences, no keyboard shortcut settings).

Now it looks like you completely broken the iPad version (and you can't easily downgrade to previous version, for a vast majority of users it is simply impossible). I am afraid to install the macOS version because I will get a heart attack...

(Tech note: I have quite popular iPadPro 8,3 (11" 2018), but I'm pretty sure that these bugs also apply to other iPads. I use Apple Pencil 2. Latest Evernote 10.1 on latest iPadOS 14.2).

yeah, me too... Somebody fix problem?

Unfortunately you have only 3 options:

    1. downgrade to to latest legacy version,
    2. use keyboard scripting language for Windows like AutoHotkey and script like this one,
    3. get rid of Evernote and use something else instead :(

After 10+ years of using Evernote I'm thinking on third option myself. Sad but true. Evernote developers completely disregard users. Even if they fix this particular bug - who knows what kind of disaster they'll bring upon us in the future...

Unfortunately, that doesn't work for me. I've been already using AHK, and I have some scripts, but this one for some reason can't do the job.

Can you tell us what the symptoms are? It doesn't work at all, or maybe just with capital Ś? Are you sure that you have Alt Gr on the right side of the space (there are keyboards with "normal" Right Alt - in that case you have to modify the script and add Ctrl as well).

    You can add

    #Warn

at the top of your AHK script - it may reveal some warnings.

True, it is not up to me, but it is you who might look as a person who have absolutely no idea how keyboard shortcuts work.

When you're posting something like this:

Evernote mess this up entirely. Bunch of stupid morons. I feel sorry for them. For now I suggest to downgrade to latest legacy version. Just do this and that to roll-back. Shame on them, but that's the only option.

it's OK. One might even have an impression that you actually care and want to help us. It's OK.

But when you writing something like this:

"unfortunately there are no settings in the new desktop clients yet. They will return with a future update, no roadmap, no date"

    or

It's Windows. Stupid Windows. It should detect Evernote v10 and adopt to it.

No, it is not ok because it doesn't help anyone.

  16. On 11/5/2020 at 10:58 AM, PinkElephant said:

This seems to be a general problem with EN v10 on Windows. Since currently there are no settings, there is no switch to turn it off.

To solve it, uninstall and go back to the prior version. You can reinstall v10 once settings are added. You can also run both side by side.

What on Earth are you talking about?! It has nothing to do with Windows!

There is a general problem with Evernote and your complete lack of elementary knowledge on keyboard shortcuts (language-specific layouts).

Stop being ridiculous @PinkElephant, it's pathetic...

Unfortunately this effects in sending "Ĺ›" and not ś. Maybe I'm doing something wrong :)

The real cause of this issue is missing BOM header. Simply save the file as "UTF-8 with BOM".

For all those who want try this AutoHotKey work-around - check the attached file for a basic script. Download it and save as i.e. c:\AutoHotkey.ahk

Then simply start AHK with the file above as a parameter (you can paste the line below into command line):

    C:\Programs\AutoHotkey\AutoHotkey.exe C:\AutoHotkey.ahk

It should remap AltGr+s into "ś" and AltGr+Shift+s into "Ś" (depending on whether Shift is pressed or not):

    This is the script itself:

    RAlt & s::
    If GetKeyState("Shift","P")
       Send {Text}Ś
    else
       Send {Text}ś
    return

    AutoHotkey.ahk

  18. @PinkElephant this is not a tiny bug that can be simply skipped, postpone for better time...

This is a critical fundamental error in the project! Thousand of users using Polish-programmer keyboard layout (probably 99,9% of users in Poland) cannot use Evernote.

Many of those users have premium subscription.

You did the mess. And you are going to do nothing about it?

@PinkElephant it is not about missing Preferences itself. They grab system-wide shortcut (Ctrl+Alt+S) without asking user. And now we cannot use Evernote anymore
