  1. No. I downloaded Backupery and simply asked it to backup my notebooks into enex files. I had 7 notebooks and it took about half an hour to complete. After that, I could see that there 7 enex files that had been created on my backup external drive. So far, so good ie: this is exactly what I was expecting it to do. However, what I didn't expect is that it actually altered my original EN inbox by putting in 70 blank notes in there. I deleted them all but wasn't really sure what happened. Actually, I was pretty worried initially because some of those notes are pretty crucial and, at first, I thought I had lost all the data within the notes. However, I then figured out that the real notes were sitting in all of the other notebooks and what I was seeing were just blank notes all sitting in my inbox. It was pretty strange and I assume that it must be a glitch. For example, Gazumped who has 400 notebooks would probably have seen 4000 blank notes appear in his inbox!
  2. OK. However, I noticed that when I looked at my inbox there were about 70 notes that had appeared there. These were all blank notes ie: apart from the header there was nothing else. They all said "Not available in the free trial". I am appending one example and a screen shot of part of the entire list. The actual notes are fine and they are located in all of my other notebooks. I suspect what happened is that I am seeing 10 notes from each of my 7 notebooks showing up in my Inbox all at the same time. It was not a problem and I was easily able to remove them. However, if someone has 400 notebooks they may have seen 4000 of these show up. Just a head's up.

  4. Thanks Denis. Actually, Backupery completed doing its download. It was not clear to me from the website what it was actually downloading in the trial version. I thought I saw the number "10" mentioned, so I thought perhaps it would be 10 notes of each notebook? The final download was much smaller than my entire database so I'm pretty sure that it did not download the entire database but only a certain number of notes from each notebook. The exact number was not clear to me. Anyway, the program works and for someone who has a lot of notebooks it would probably be a non-brainer. I have 7 notebooks and it was very easy for me to export an enex file of each one to my Gdrive. So, I don't think I personally need Backupery. However, from what I could see it does work well. Thanks.
  5. I understand. By the way, this is one unexpected advantage of using a system that de-emphasizes notebooks. My only notebooks pertain to Work, Home, Inbox etc. So there is a total of 7. Most of my organization is on the basis of tags, naming conventions etc. Therefore, all I have to do is manually export 7 files which I am beginning to realize will be much simpler than dealing with Github or Backupery. In retrospect I realize that much of the discussions centering on optimal organizational approaches did not really mention the backup advantages of having fewer notebooks.
  6. Hi Gazumped, Question on Backupery. So it completed running and I now see that it has downloaded an enex file on each notebook. However, couldn't I do the same thing by simply right clicking on the notebook and selecting "export notebook" ? In other words, is this all that Backupery does ie: automate the downloading of the enex files to a backup location? In only have about 7 notebooks so it seems as if I could easily do this myself. Or is there something else that I'm missing here? Addendum: With Legacy I would download the enex files in this manner but I would also download the user.exb file also. This exb file has disappeared with v10. According to Pink and others the new way is to swap in the entire database folder. Therefore, my new backup technique will be to manually backup the enex files and the database folder once a month. Don't really see why I need the Backupery program at all.
  7. So after following several threads here regarding how to backup EN v10 (windows) I decided to try Backupery. I elected the trial "limited" version so I could see what it could do. There is an option to "continue using in the test mode" rather than "buy a license key". Even at this initial stage I was not sure what the trial version would do because of a spelling mistake regarding how many notes on each notebook would be sampled (I don't want to elaborate on this right now). The program appeared to start backing up my database but eventually just hung with a "not responding" message on top of it. I tried closing it down and then re-opening without success. Ultimately I had to use Task Manager to force it to close. I then re-opened it and it said "Backup in progress" and "Completed 668.9 MB". A few minutes later the "Completed 668.9MB" changed to "Comple" (actual spelling). No idea if it is still backing up, if it's done, if it's failed etc. In short, very buggy experience. I was hoping that by paying for this program I could avoid the complexity of dealing with the free Evernote backup in Github. I am not a techy, have zero experience in coding, and was reluctant to go on a steep learning curve in Github. these lengths.
  8. Thanks Pink. So if I ever have to reconstitute EN I replace the folder with the synched folder? I will also keep a backup of each notebook as an enex file just for safety. I also keep a copy of all my “Add to Evernote” folders.
  9. Just want to make sure that I am understanding how to backup the data file. The Settings gives me the following path for the Evernote local data: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Evernote when I go there I see something like this. There's no one actual database file like I was used to seeing on Legacy (that one was called username.exb). Instead there are now entire folders and I don't know if the database file is one file enclosed within a folder. When I try to use my sync software to sync this folder to an external hard drive it tells me that there are 3500 files to synch.
  10. This is not an unheard of policy of retaining customers. I encountered this recently when I cancelled my cable TV and my Sirius satellite radio subscription ie: I called up and asked to cancel and they immediately offered a discount to retain the business. I've seen this many times over the years. One thing that should be noted is that these offers are not always forthcoming and that means that you take a risk in cancelling your account ie: you can hit "cancel" and not actually be presented with an alternative offer. Therefore, this is a game worth playing only if you're absolutely sure that you are unwilling to pay the current price but could be convinced to continue with the service at a lower price. I don't want to play games with a service as important to me as EN.
  11. Just out of interest, this "notejoy" appears to come out of the blue. I've been following this forum for years and many alternatives for EN have been discussed. I don't recall seeing Notejoy discussed before. I took a look at their website and they look like an EN clone. It's always nice to have alternatives but I would be very cautious transferring my entire organizational life to an entity that hasn't been tried and tested by years of usage. Perhaps they may eventually be a better alternative but I certainly wouldn't make a switch like this over $100..
  12. Just purchased a Win 10 machine and trying to set up some backup protocols onto an external hard drive. Thus, I was trying to locate the EN database file for periodic backups. The description of the location of this file on the EN help pages is: "If you choose to backup the Evernote data directly, the data that must be backed up lives in the C:\Users\[PC Name]\Evernote\Databases directory, so you'll want to make sure it's included in your backups. Some older versions of Evernote databases may exist in the C:\Users[PC Name]\AppData\Local\Evernote\Evernote\Databases directory. I do not see the database file in either location. When I go to C:\Users\[PC Name]\ I do not see an Evernote folder in that path. And when I try the C:\Users[PC Name]\AppData\Local\Evernote\Evernote\Databases directory option , I do not see an "Evernote" folder in that path. Instead, I see something that says "evernote-client-updater". If I go to AppData\Roaming\Evernote I see a folder that says "databases-off-the-record" but it doesn't have any data in it. In short, how the heck do I find the database file? I seem to recall that in Legacy there was a feature within EN itself that would point you directly to where that file was sitting. I don't see that in v10. My plan was to do periodic backups of the database file as well as all of the enex files. I also backup my "Add to EN" folder which houses all of the pdfs that I export into EN. Also, did a search for username.exb and could not find that file anywhere on the hard drive. I am assuming that the newer v10 does not use that file as the database?
  13. I also received a request to pay another $70 going forward for my pro subscription. Nobody likes a price increase but EN is currently the one program that I use for every aspect of my life, both home and work. I do not deal with paper anymore at either place (it's all scanned and in EN). I use EN as a database for all of my bills, statements, manuals, projects etc. I use the Task manager to set all of my tasks. I use the clipper dozens of times a day to clip things from the web or any other work project that I'm involved with. I interface with my employees through EN and use it as the place where I dump their projects and then monitor what they're doing. I use EN to keep track of every project at home and work including detailed travel plans and arrangements. My EN is linked to my ipad, iphone and several windows computers and it's all pretty seamless. In fact ,not a day goes by that I don't need to consult with EN at least a dozen times (usually more). I am absolutely dependent on EN and paying another $70 is not going to change that. For those that are dropping their subscriptions I can only assume that they are less reliant on EN than I am or much more sensitive to price.
  14. Is there a difference between forwarding a Gmail directly to Evernote, as opposed to using the Gmail add in? The add in seems to take considerably longer to load but gives you some additional options which I never use anyway. Sometimes I notice that the gmail arrives in Evernote in a different way depending on which of the two methods I use. I may be mistaken about this.
  15. It was remarkably speedy. Within 3 minutes of downloading En onto the new hard drive I had full utilization of the program with every note and attachment available. I do, however, want to have the actual data downloaded to the computer because it makes me feel that I have a safe local storage of all the information just in case something happens to the EN servers. Also, I tend to export all my notes every so often to google drive using the export feature. Since it's impossible that everything downloaded within those few minutes how do I know when I can start exporting entire notebooks to my Gdrive? In other words, does the actual data load locally over time? This is not a computer that I would ever use "offline" but I still like to have all the attachment data in the local machine.
  16. A bit confused about this. Today I installed win 10 on a brand new computer and then downloaded EN onto it. Within a few minutes I saw every notebook and all the notes in the notebooks. I even looked at pdf's, word docs, spreadsheets etc to make sure that I wasn't just looking at thumbnail images. How could this info have populated so quickly? Or was I looking at information that was being transmitted instantaneously from the EN servers? My understanding in the past was that it took many hours of constant downloading to get all of that information over (about 10,000 notes). Just to be on the safe side I left EN on active focus overnight.
  17. In Legacy, once you assign the notebook to the note it instantly disappears from focus ie: it's whisked away to that notebook. So there was no other choice but to assign tags first (which keeps the note in front of you) and then to assign it to a notebook. In v10 (web, iphone etc) once you assign the note to a notebook it stays in front focus allowing you to then assign tags. So you can assign tags and notebooks in any sequence of order. With v10 even after you assign the note to a different notebook the note still sits there in front of you (in the current notebook you are in) until you physically click elsewhere. So technically I can be looking at my "inbox" and yet the note I see on the right side is labelled "Work" instead of inbox. Not a big deal but several times I've glanced at my EN and mistaken the notebook that I'm in because of this.
  18. I've had a hard time figuring out how exactly to do this. On the Evernote help section it implies that you can use @ and # respectively to send your email to the proper notebook and tag. Here is their example: Email Subject: Hotel Reservation @travel planning #japan (this would have the title Hotel Reservation and would go into the "travel planning" notebook with a tag "japan". It does not seem to work for me. In the subject line I put Testing123 @work#ah The email is then forwarded to EN and here is what I see: I've tried it multiple ways ie: I've put in a space between @ and "work", or I've eliminated the space between 123 and @work but I never see the email being forwarded to the correct notebook. On the other hand, the tags always work correctly. Why is every email going to "Inbox" instead of the notebook that I'm trying to demarcate? Thanks in advance,
  19. This is an old thread but I can confirm that as of 8/2023 the apple watch is still not able to "Append to Evernote". It works great on the iphone itself ie: using Apple Shortcuts I can dictate an entire note which will then appear as a transcript in my EN inbox. It's absolutely seamless and I use it quite often. On the apple watch I get an error message that says "Could not run Append to Evernote." As Pink was saying I now have JustPressRecord on the watch and am using that when I don't have access to my phone. It's unfortunate that the apple watch does not have any integration with EN. For example, would be great to see the Tasks there or to leave an impromptu note.
  20. I started playing with the shortcuts app and discovered something quite interesting. My shortcut allows me to tell Siri to "Dictate". This then takes my dictated message and sends it directly to a specific note in my inbox in Evernote. The interesting thing is that every dictation that I make is appearing in the same note called "Dictated Text". It's actually quite nice because I can refer to that one note and see everything. In some ways it's nicer than JustPressRecord because it delivers a perfect dictation and places it exactly where I want to see it without my doing anything else. I hope eventually to be able to create a shortcut that will create an actual Task with a date and time. For anyone who wants to use this:
  21. Hi B Higgs, So that looks like a shortcut that you prepare on the iphone? I assume that you prepare it on the iphone and then use it on the watch? I'm not well versed with the Shortcut options of the iphone but it looks like it could work very well. I like Pink's "JustPressRecord" and I am routinely using it; however, it requires the additional step of going to the iphone to retrieve the transcripts and to forward it to EN. If you forget that step it obviates the entire purpose of the exercise.
  22. I noticed something strange on my win10/ EN v10 yesterday. I needed to refer to a note that had two images in it. The images were photos of a contract that I had taken days ago and sent to EN. For some reason I could not see the images at all. On the left I could see the tiny thumbnail with the two images; but on the main screen...nothing. I tried different things and finally went to a win7 machine running Legacy. Sure enough the two images were there. After a while they also appeared on the v10 machine. This is not the first time and it's troublesome because my first reaction is to think that I messed up and the content is lost.
  23. Thanks Pink. I've been playing with JustPressRecord and really like it. Do you happen to know if there is any way to record on the watch and to have it go directly to EN? Currently it goes to the JPR app on the iphone which means that I have to remember to go there and then share it to EN. If the whole point of JPR is to never forget a thought, it seems as if I would still miss them unless I remembered to retrieve them from the phone.
  24. Just purchased an Apple watch SE (first generation) and noticed that Evernote is not showing up. I looked on the iphone and did not see that EN was an option to download for the watch. Many of my other apps downloaded automatically to the watch but not Evernote. When I bring up the app store on the watch itself I see a lot of other options eg:onenote, todoist etc but not evernote. The only thing there that says "evernote" is a paid app called "Fastever3" which is described as a "quick note taking for evernote". Any reason why evernote is not an option?
  25. Thanks Mike P. Good catch. I got lazy and was using the ctrl-alt S.
