  1. I'm finding that this forum is devolving into gripe sessions from people who resent paying the price or who don't like the various tiers. It's somewhat annoying since I generally come here to learn interesting things from the EN luminaries on this site. The only thing that people on this site can provide is help and advice to one another. We have no control over the prices and it has already been well established that EN itself does not participate in any of these discussions. Not even clear to me if they monitor anything here. Yes, there are some annoying things with EN and experts on this site can provide helpful hacks and workarounds to them. I would prefer that there were moderators to simply put all of the gripes in a sub forum and allow the rest of us to benefit from the EN illuminati . There are very few forums around that have people at this level of expertise who are so willing to give of their time to help other people. It's truly remarkable and we risk losing their enthusiasm with all this tangential stuff.
  2. This was my point. There are many such alternatives but they often require layers of other stuff to get to what you have with EN. Also, some of these alternatives do not have as seamless a web clipper as does EN.
  3. YOU may have found Joplin "today" but a lot of other users here have found Joplin a long time ago. And many of them are right back here again. I think that using a variety of work arounds and hacks you can probably make Joplin work similarly to EN, but it will not be as good. Ultimately, you may find that the hassle factor was simply not worth the savings. Many people try things like this with pricey programs eg: Adobe, Word, Quickbooks and sometimes you can cobble together a solution that's "almost as good" but it will certainly not be better. In some cases it's decidedly worse and ultimately you need to return after having expended a lot of effort. The increasing costs of products tend to enrage the consumers but often it's something that just needs to be paid and "it's not personal". For example, Netflix...they raised their rates multiple times and their customers howled and raged and left in droves. However, they all came back and many more too. Why, because there aren't many streaming services as good as Netflix. And if you have to pay $20/month for it, you will. EN is similar ie: lots and lots of cheaper alternatives, but they're not nearly as good.
  4. Not sure I even understand the problem. I use "file drawers" all the time through tags eg: Taxes 2021, Taxes 2022, Taxes 2023. Is he saying that he wants nested notebooks? I specifically prefer a limited number of notebooks and a much larger number of tags because when I export my notebooks I only have to do 7 of them and I'm done. On the other hand, since I use tags as the file drawers there are hundreds of them.
  5. Hernan, I tried to resist updating for a very long time since I have a situation with multiple win 7 machines that needed actually to become win 10 so as to get the EN v10. Finally I simply had no other choice and had to accept the headache, expense and time loss that it takes to convert everything. In retrospect it was an extremely good move in many ways. One can mess around with old updated equipment and run older programs but eventually it catches up to you and you start running into lots of problems. I bit the bullet and simply upgraded/updated everything. Much, much happier now even thought it wasn't easy. Everything (not just EN) simply works better now.
  6. It's just a personal preference. I know that many videos these days decide to forego the narrative and instead they show you themselves moving through the various stages of the app. This can work if the initial premise is very simple eg: how to create a filter with gmail. It would then show you slowly the 4 steps you need to go through to do that. This video has 5 entirely different and generic items listed in its name "tags, filtered notes, saved searches, shortcuts, quick access" but doesn't tell you what the issues are or what it's attempting to show. I'm sure that very savvy users will be able figure out what is going on but I wasn't able to (and I've been using EN for 12 years).
  7. So I did a shortcut that allows me to say "hey siri, dictate" and then the dictation goes directly to my EN inbox. It worked spendidly the first time and when I tried it again I got the message "Application reached hourly API limit"
  8. I think it's well worth it at the high price. I hope that enough people keep paying the subscription so that the product gets better and more stable for the rest of us. If I felt that there was something better than EN out there I would leave also. But there isn't. And I'm not going to shoot myself in the foot for $70/yr. I use EN about 30X/day 24/7. So now I'll be paying a 1/10 cent more for each usage.
  9. Hi Sugeeth. I can't really decipher what the video is trying to say. There's no narration, just snappy music and things happening super fast. I even slowed the action down and still can't entirely figure what you're trying to show. I'm sure it's very sophisticated but not even sure what it's attempting to show. Just my 2 cents.
  10. I was quite enamored with tabs on the web client when I first started using them and I had permanent tabs for my inbox, work notebook, home notebook etc. However, over time I stopped using them and found that I just went to the windows v10 EN app for everything. I don't really see the huge advantage of tabs when you can pretty much set up v10 in whatever way you want. However, if you're dying to have them nothing is easier than setting them up on Chrome and having as many permanent tabs as you desire.
  11. At times I have taken a notebook, exported the enex files, deleted the original notebook and then reconstituted the deleted notebook by using the enex files. This worked when I tried it with a notebook of 100 notes. I assumed it would work for all 9000 if I needed it to.
  12. Thanks for the responses. I have never seen this happen in 12 years but it seems as if removing the files in the import folder is curative. So if I backup the database file instead do I need to quit EN and shut down all the active processes before I do the backup?
  13. I've always had a directory on my win 10 C drive called "Add to Evernote". When I want anything to appear in my EN Inbox I send it here. Recently I began noticing 50-60 duplications appearing in my inbox every time I updated EN. After deleting those notes they would appear again the next time I updated (even after reconstituting). Eventually I discovered the culprit ie: there were 50 files in my Add to Evernote directory that would keep re-appearing in the Inbox even though I had moved those notes to other notebooks. This behavior was maddening but was not seen for all of the notes in "Add to EN", but only for 50. After deleting those 50 files the problem appears solved. Can't understand why this happened and if the problem may not reappear (perhaps next time with a 1000 duplications). Sure, I understand that I could delete the entire "Add to EN" directory and those pdfs would still be in my EN app but I like to have that directory as a backup repository of my files. Any thoughts?
  14. I"ve posted my little bugaboo a dozen times so I won't bore anyone with it again; but I used to be able to export thousands of pdfs from Legacy into a directory on my C drive and then manipulate them to my heart's content with Adobe Acrobat. It was a major part of my work flow. That is most definitely not possible on v10. The other thing I experienced (and it was somewhat frightening) is the corruption of a crucial note in which I kept 10 years of data stored on a pdf. That never happened to me before on Legacy but I found a work-around. Recently I experienced duplication of files which recurred over and over again and this is an ongoing mess. There have been other annoyances that I won't get into. I view v10 as a kind of buggy Lamborgini that looks beautiful and has a ton of bells and whistles, whereas Legacy was like a simple but reliable Toyota Civic. I'm not giving up EN so I've reconciled myself to making v10 work for me and to stop moaning about Legacy. Frankly, even though I loved Legacy I've deleted it from my computers and forced myself 100% into v10.
  15. I use AW dozens of times a day. It's absolutely invaluable. The only slight downside is that it requires a tiny bit of technical skill (very tiny) and therefore may not be a good fix for people with absolute zero tech abilities. However, my tech skills are pretty close to zero and I still have derived enormous use from it. A $30 investment allows you to use it on 3 different machines and they all sync perfectly.
  16. I don't really understand the AI response. That doesn't look like AW scripting language. Here is an example of a simple script in EN. When I type 14338336 it executes the following script: {tab 5}92014{tab 5}1{tab}2{tab}3{enter}{tab 13}92133{tab 5}1{tab 15}92083{tab 5}1{tab 15}92136{tab 5}1 This script takes a medical billing template which is blank and it enters procedure and diagnostic codes into the grid. That one sequence in the triggering word takes care of the entire billing of this hypothetical patient. Since we do this 40-50 times a day the savings in time is enormous. There are many, many other ways to use scripts.
  17. Hi vincent, Yes simpler is always better. I haven't used Text Expander but I will look it over. ActiveWords is indeed very powerful and extremely simple if all you are doing is text substitution or program launching. The scripting language is more powerful but requires a learning curve. Recently I wrote a script for ActiveWords that places the focus in the "Add Tag" box at the bottom and adds the tag that I want. It then jumps to the "Move Note" box at the top and adds the notebook that I want the note to go to. So in my case where I have about 15 notes a day that need to be tagged a certain way and then moved to a specific notebook this probably saves 40-50 extra clicks a day. Likewise, I use it for adding dates in various formats to my notes, moving the focus to certain fields that I want to be in etc. The usage has been limited for EN but ActiveWords has become my most relied upon program for just about everything else I do. It's the first program I load when I purchase a new computer (disclaimer: I have no financial stake in ActiveWords).
  18. Just wondering if anyone else is using ActiveWords with Evernote? ActiveWords is a very powerful program that uses universal auto correct, action triggers, macros and script writing. It launches programs, files, folders etc. It can carry out scripted sequences, date stamp and all kinds of other useful features. I use it a dozen times a day at least. I've been playing around with it within EN to automate certain tasks such as assigning tags to certain notes and then automatically placing it within a specific notebook (annoying sequences that I have to do multiple times daily). It's a fantastic program but sometimes the script writing is a bit laborious and I was wondering if anyone else had incorporated this into their EN usage.
  19. I think I've figured it out. When you choose how to hyperlink you need to choose the Copy Internal Link option from the menu but then you need to choose app link instead of web link. When I do it that way it opens up in the app. I didn't realize that before so will have to redo all 30 items now.
  20. I have created a "Documents Central" pinned note which allows me to go the Home section of EN v10 windows and see important documents in a list. Each item is listed as a clickable link. If I click that link it should take me to the driver license document which is located elsewhere in my EN v10 windows. And if you go to that note you can even see the backlink that re-directs you back to the pinned note in the Documents Central note that it came from. However, there are other hyperlinked lines in that Document Central note that for some reason open up the note in the web browser instead of in the app (it does not do that if I'm doing it from my EN iphone). Have I set these items up in the wrong way? ie: did I inadvertently make them hyperlinks that go to the web instead of hyperlinks that go to other places within the same app?
  21. This is quite a nice trick. However, I've found that if the emoji is the first character in the tag then it is difficult or impossible for me to add the tag. For example, let's say I want a tag that sits at the top of my inbox and is called !Task. Now, let's say I want to add color to it.....I could do this. I can always find this tag by simply starting to type !Task (or even just the exclamation point) and it will pop up with the nice orange emoji. However, if my tag is named with the orange emoji at the beginning, then I can never find it in the tag address box because I don't know how to type an orange emoji.
  22. Has anyone else found this to be annoying? I am going through my inbox notes one by one ie": taking notes and either deleting them or assigning them to other notebooks. The goal is to get the inbox to zero. So I take the first note, assign it a tag and then Alt-M (move note) eg:"Work". But the silly thing doesn't go anywhere. It stays right in front of me even though the notebook icon on top now indicates "Work". If I click on "Inbox" on the left panel the note will be whisked away and I can now start working on the next one. The next note is really useless and I decide to delete it. Nonetheless, it continues to stay there even though the icon at the top indicates that it is now in the Trash. So essentially, once notes are adjudicated in the Inbox they often stay sullenly in the foreground staring dolefully at their master rather than disappearing immediately (as was always the case with Legacy). I do not see this problem all the time and sometimes it works perfectly. Nonetheless, I do encounter this frequently enough as to be annoying.
  23. Does this mean that even though everything looked entirely normal I should keep my computer on because data is downloading in the background? And if so, how do I know it's downloading and how would I know when it's done? Why does the app not give any instructions regarding any of this? It's all surprisingly opaque.
  24. Thanks so much for that recco. I must have been unduly worried about doing these steps ie: choosing to delete my local data, deleting and reinstalling EN. However, I did all that and it worked and now the app is no longer misbehaving. The thing that confuses me is that even though I chose to delete all my data from this machine, after downloading EN I was able to see all of my data immediately. I always thought that if did this it would take many hours or days to reconstitute it all on the machine again. Nope, it was all back again instantly. I assume I have a profound misunderstanding of how this all works.
  25. By “remove the offending notes” do you mean that I should permanently delete them in all of the various notebooks where they reside? The issue is that these same 40 notes keep appearing in the Inbox every time I open the app regardless of whether they’ve already been deleted. A copy of each of these can be found in various notebooks and they are all crucial notes. I can’t delete them but I could rename each of them or put them in another notebook.
