  1. Hi.  AFAIK Evernote requires links of a specific type:  either web pages - http:// or www,  email addresses with an '@',  or file:/// which tells Evernote to open a local file on your computer.  As yet it doesn;t know what to do with your accord link.  You'd need to know more about Apple / ElC's rules on links,  and how (if at all) Evernote could be set up to navigate to the reference.  I'd suggest raising a support ticket - click Troubleshooting in the Help Center (link below in my sig) and scroll to the bottom of the page to see the 'Contact Support' button.

  2. Hi.  Are all these notes in the same notebook?  You may be receiving 'Conflicting Changes' notifications - if two devices are connected to the same account in Evernote and both save different version of the same note -

"Evernote creates a duplicate note with any edits made. This duplicate note is automatically saved to a notebook named “Conflicting Changes...” along with a unique timestamp. Users are responsible for determining which changes they would like to keep or discard."

The trick is to manually sync before,  during and after any changes are being made.

  3. I don't understand why it's so hard to accept that Evernote have their own agenda and will get around to stuff in their own good time.  Not doing something doesn't mean they don't know how to do it,  or are deliberately being obstructive.  It's common business sense to get rid of the small easy stuff and carefully plan for the harder jobs.  Meantime no one's suggesting we have to break out the candles and start building log fires,  just - if plan A isn't working,  try plan B.  My days usually end up around plan Z anyways...  ;)

  4. Can't find the reference,  but I do remember a post by one Employee about much-requested missing features - along the lines of "some stuff we can do immediately,  because it's just extra code;  other things need a fundamental rewrite because the mechanism to provide that feature just doesn't exist,  and we'd need to replace whole blocks of code - which already links to other features - to add it.  That requires serious resource,  risk assessment and planning.  The easy stuff we can do quickly,  the more complicated stuff takes a lot longer."

    - Evidence the recent Editor updates that hit after some years' development - which by-the-by might have been necessary before extra bells and whistles like sorting could be added...

(That's my recollection not their words so I apologise for any misinterpretations!)

Like @Metrodon says - I'm not 'against' sorting,  and I'll definitely use it if/ when it's available.  But it's not currently possible;  so I do the 'use another app' dance when I need to sort.  It's a pain,  but that's the way the world currently works.  Evernote will fix it when they're ready to do so.

  5. Hi.  You don't say whether you're a basic, plus or premium user,  and of course there are differences in the amount you're allowed to save in one note and upload in one month for each of those accounts.  It's possible you exceeded the limit to cause this problem,  though you'd need a lot of large pictures to exceed the single note / upload limits for even the basic account. Either way I'd recommend you raise a support ticket - follow the Help Center in my signature below and scroll to the bottom of the Troubleshooting page for the Contact Support button.

  6. No problem for the 'help' although it didn't get you very far..  When my Android Note 4 saves a clip I get a spinning green icon to indicate the clip is in progress,  and if you tap the icon before it finishes - which in your case should give you plenty of time - there's an option to untick 'save full article' and just save the URL.  If you clip with that option the setting is remembered.  Does it make things move faster to deliberately clip just the URL?  Not a fix I know,  but it may help..

  7. H.  No reason that I know of - are the 'blue' pages identical with the others?  Same background colour / same text colour and size / same lighting conditions?  If so,  I'd suggest you check through the Help Center pages (see the link in my sig) and contact support to raise a bug report / ask for tech support.  Scannable carries out a lot of image enhancement,  and maybe the same settings that turn out black and white pages under normal circumstances will also give black on blue if the lighting is marginal.

  8. Hi.  Closing Evernote with File > Exit will save the current note sort order,  but not the size of a new window.  If you're opening a new note in its own window,  Windows should remember the window size on close,  and open new similar windows at the same size - just tried that on my Win 8.1 system,  and it seems to work...

If it's not working for you,  sadly there are no settings to adjust.  :(

  9. Hmmn.  I looked again at 2pm (install + 2 hours) and the Backupery window said 'working';  then checked again just - 5pm (+5hrs) and it showed the same - was preparing to be underwhelmed,  but when I checked the backup file location,  a 17GB file is happily sitting there with a modified time of 12.52 which is about an hour after install.  So it looks like even my heavyweight database got copied in an hour or less,  which is actually pretty good.  The EXB file is 14GB so there's a bit of expansion when you export,  but I have USB drives that are bigger than that.  (Wouldn't recommend using one though because the data transfer rates are pants*...)

Subject to the reservations and suggestions above,  this is a sweet bit of software.  Thanks!

    * UK slang for sub-optimal in a bad way ;)

  10. OK I downloaded the app too (latest version) - first thoughts are:

    • on Install,  Windows immediately 'protected' me from unknown software - kinda unsettling if you aren't expecting it...
    • The first backup starts immediately without any warnings or options - agree with Morticia I'd like a choice where it goes,  and I'd suggest a 'backup now,  or postpone?' (for 1/2/4/8 hours) option.
    • Checking the About tab I see this is a trial version expiring on 31/10
    • Some sort of a progress bar would be good - I got 'working' but how do I know when it's finished?  Can I sleep/ switch off the machine in the meantime?

    - I'll add any further comments when the operation finishes.  Currently running at 30% disk / 90% memory (4GB Win 8.0 lappy here).  More to follow...

  11. Hi John,  thanks for your detailed answers.  My database size is 14GB / 21,000 notes - the average size,  as you'll see, is a lot higher than your model.  I digitised a library of documents so I have notes with lots of PDF pages.  At the moment I'm doing a local backup to external hard drives in two ways - including the Databases folder in my normal system backup,  and also copying the folder individually.  I'm currently running Win 8.1 and EN Desktop 5.9.2 beta on an 8GB I7 Dell.

You're right,  of course,  that restoring an ENEX file goes (by default I think) to a local notebook,  but I'm still concerned that if I ever had to restore my full database it would take me 2 months and a fair amount of extra work to get back to fully synced notes.  Nevertheless if the other choice was not to have any notes,  I think I could live with that...

Is there any chance that you'll consider offering a notebook-by-notebook backup at any stage?  That might answer Morticia's query about some notes not needing backup - like my own digitised library forinstance,  which is for reference,  not for frequent (or any) editing.  It wouldn't be a hardship to have one or more notebook(s) backed up once every 6 months,  while others got processed every few days...

I appreciate we're talking about - initially at least - a free product here,  so at some point the bells and whistles will start to incur a cost!

  12. Hi John.  I'm a little nervous about exports to Enex on a scheduled basis.  Export by default

    • might take a long time - a full export of my c.21,000 notes seemed to take forever the last time I tried
    • doesn't preserve a notebook structure
    • breaks note-to-note links
    • doesn't include any clues as to notebook hierarchy
    • restores as one potentially huge notebook that could break even premium upload limits
    • might be happening at the same time I'm editing a note - which version survives?  (If I'm managing an export of my own,  I'm -by definition- not doing anything else!)

Can you provide any more comment on these points?  I can still see that there are huge advantages to having a set it and forget it backup,  and I think it's a great idea to make it really simple for the majority of users out there who need to be convinced that backups are a Good Idea,  but a full restore might take a very long time to sort out...

  13. I have read a lot of post on why having subnotebooks have advantages and speed up the organization and recall of idea's.  So what is EN reason for not including this feature.  Would it slow people down? Are they trying to teach us a better way and we just can't grasp it? Is it to to much processing power? Bandwdth? What is the reason.

There are innumerable posts in the forums covering both sides of the argument - for and against hierarchies.  Evernote don't generally seem to feel a need to justify their product design - the simple fact is that this has been the choice since it's inception,  and they've shown no inclination to change.  They may have given it some thought,  or they may simply have followed Google who use the same structure - and have even more accounts than Evernote.

As a user,  either you learn to use it,  or you find a different product.  :(

  14. Hi Jason - thanks for the confirmation and some background,  but given that there's a long history of mobile device users with limited storage,  and more 'expert' users like me wanting to download databases that exceed the available internal storage space,  couldn't this be offered as an option?  Performance issues would be down to Evernote to solve,  or to me to accept,  as would Security problems.  Would this be accepted as a feature request,  or is the door slammed firmly shut?

  15. Hi.  You're correct that it's not easy to tell which notes or notebooks are shared.  It is possible to search by " sharedate:* " which will give you some useful information,  but I tend to share by notebooks mainly,  so give that notebook a suitable title;  and on the relatively few occasions I've shared notes,  I move them into a 'Shared' notebook so I know which ones to be careful of.  I was mainly concerned not to delete or move them by mistake,  which would have ended the share rather suddenly;  and it allows me to tell someone that I've updated a note if it's of relevance to them..

  16. Can't recall seeing OCR used in the context of converting images to text.  The phrase Optical Character Recognition does exactly what it says on the can.  It can recognise its X's and Y's and allow you to search for and find only the X's if you need to.  Evernote has published various pieces which clearly show how it works -

    https://blog.evernote.com/tech/2013/07/18/how-evernotes-image-recognition-works/

    https://blog.evernote.com/blog/2013/10/11/quick-tip-how-to-search-for-text-inside-an-image/

    - and none of them mention editable text.

As to 'needing to have full OCR' I'm sure it's on a to-do list somewhere.  It might take a while...

  17. Hi.  There's a thread somewhere here about new software to export notes to PDF files,  but I don't know anything about its capabilities.  There's also something called "FastPencil"  - book-publishing software that imports Evernote notes into a manuscript for publishing.  It seems like a possible option for getting multiple notes into a specific format.  Other than that you'd have to look to exporting something that another publishing application can use..
