How do you turn off "Press "/" to insert an element" from blank lines on a note?

Recommended Posts

This new update is in my opinion extremely distracting and annoying. I am having this issue using Evernote on a Windows machine. I do not see it happening on the mobile version. I am running the most up-to-date version on Windows which is 10.79.3. According to the release notes, this slash command note was added as a "new feature".

Any time you have empty space on a list and start to type, the message "Press "/" to insert an element" pops up in light gray.

I want to turn this off. There must be a way to do it. Does anyone know how?

According to my Windows OS version of Evernote, I am on the latest version. It is 10.79.3 and it included this slash command issue as a new feature. There is no "slash commands" option in the three dot menu next to "Share," so I don't think this can be turned off.

I don't see a way to update to 10.81.4 as you described.

I saw the "Hide inline hint" and turned it off, however whenever I type "/" the shortcut appears. How do I disable the commands as I need to use "/" in my notes?

It is a hindrance when I am typing "/" and then something else appears like a TABLE or New Note.

Fixed! Thanks everyone.

In my opinion, this was an extremely unnecessary thing from Evernote in the first place.

Here is the fix

To hide the inline hint in Evernote, you can select Note > Slash Commands > Hide Inline Hint from the menubar at the top of your screen. And I think you also have to be updated to at least version 10.85.4

This has been solved and the solution posted in this thread one month ago. Please read a thread before posting yourself.

Read this entire thread and did not see any solution posted.

I think you also have to be at a more recent version than I had. So that was not actually the solution.

Given how the updater usually keeps all clients current, I doubt you did just now get that option. This was 5 releases back - introduced with 10.81, we are now on 10.86. Maybe you didn't notice it before. They have stuck it into the 3 dots menu, probably to include the web client, but I would not have looked it up there by myself if I had not known where to go.

I found "slash commands > Hide inline hint" in windows v10.86.8 but it is not actually changing anything. I select it, restart app, and slash commands still pop up in the same note. Is this a bug anyone else is experiencing? Slash commands interrupting my ability to type today's date is truly one of the most annoying "features" I've ever encountered.

In fact the slash function doesn’t interrupt anything. Just go on typing, and it will disappear once nothing matches the slash-options. You would anyhow need to press ENTER to make any selection effective - you won’t do this while typing a date.

The switch off option is only for the grey info text showing in each new line. It does not influence the function of the slash command itself.

I've been typing the date > Enter > and then on a new line writing something since I started using evernote like 15 years ago. All my long notes have this format. Now I have to sit and wait for the dropdown to disappear to start a new line. If I forget and hit enter, it creates a new note and totally interrupts what I'm doing. I use dates in my notes, I'm sorry. I guess it's my fault?

It depends what you're typing as a date.  The rules are:  hit "/" and the drop down appears.  Type "05/05/24" and the drop down disappears when you hit the '2'

I have been using Evernote for years as a paying customer and this slash feature is driving me crazy. I have some notes where there is an entry after a date. If there is nothing to enter, I mark it with a slash. But if I now do a slash return, as I have been used to doing for years, a new linked note appears, which I have to open in a cumbersome way. So I have to make a slash and then click away the nonsensical menu. "Hide inline hint" doesn't change anything either. It can't be that such an annoying function can't be deactivated.

The menu makes perfect sense to me! If you're on 10.93.1 then use the ESC key to cancel the slash and at commands.

This "feature" is one of the worst things Evernote has ever done.

I am sure there are millions of users who do not know how to turn it off.

It should turned off by default.

LOL - turn new features OFF by default.

Then there are millions of users who don't know how to turn it ON, and there are even more millions of users who are not aware at all the feature even exists.

Not all new features, but this "feature" for sure.

They could show it once when a new note is created. Showing it on all notes and at all times is excessive.

I don't think I can remember another "feature" that is this annoying.

My problem is not the showing of hints. my problem is that when I type quickly, I often accidentally hit / and return, opening a new blank linked note that I don't want. And when I'm typing quickly it's usually because I'm taking notes and time is of the essence. Having to go back to the main Evernote to find the original note and open it causes me to lose about 30 seconds of the conversation.  This is the worst bug/feature I've seen in Evernote. I would like to disable the whole thing, not just disable or enable the hints.

I am sure large blue font will hugely impress anybody. I write this on my large blue iPhone, the one to impress everybody, so I am an expert on this big blue thing.

But „the better“ is the natural enemy of „the good“. So maybe try this instead:

It is always a shock when I'm mid-note and then suddenly I am mid-another note. Also depending on the size of the note and the speed of the computer, the dropdown takes varying amounts of time to disappear before you're allowed to hit return :(

I don’t know how you manage to be mid-note here and after a slash being mid-note over there.

What it does is showing an (annoying) popup menu. If you continue typing without hitting Enter, it folds all by itself, once all matches are exhausted.

It looks like PinkElephant has a need to harass everyone who has different needs and experiences.

Lord PinkElephant: Kindly forgive the users who sometimes need to type a slash and then press enter.

If you type a slash, then enough to create a match and then Enter, you confirm what the software has proposed you.

The one thing I don't see is an option among them to jump mid-note to another note.

You could describe when exactly you jump to the middle of another note, as you have claimed.

But you clearly don't add value to this conversation, by not answering this simple question.

Type a slash and press enter twice

(Also, please consider the possibility of not harassing other users and creating respectful and friendly conversations from the start.)

This creates a new note. It doesn't take you to the middle of an existing one.

Also consider the possibility of using precise language and not describing phenomena that don't exist, just for the sake of a sensationalist wording. This is a user forum, and you don't need to generate clickbait here.

No one used the word "existing" in this chat until you just introduced it while attempting to misunderstand us. A new note is another note. Please be precise :D

It doesn't exist here? Just go back and read your replies to others' comments. You are condescending. There is no need for that attitude.
