But then you lose the integration in Evernote and that was the starting point. There is currently only one handwriting notes app for the iPad (besides Penultimate) with full Evernote support/sync: Noteshelf.

Still, Evernote had re-written Penultimate at one point in time, so there should not be that much legacy code left from the early days. And the current drawing functionality in the Evernote app is so extremely bad that just putting Penultimate as it is in it would be a huge improvement. Replacing the specific support of the Jot Script pen with a support for the Apple Pencil should not be rocket science. But the main problem is that Evernote seems to be not interested in putting any effort in functionalities for the iPad at all. The iPadOS version is treated like the iOS version and therefore as mobile version. And of course mobile versions don't have 13" displays, trackpads, keyboards or Pencils for that matter.

I disagree. The screen of an iPad Pro 12.9" is like a MacBook Pro 13". There is absolutely no reason at all to not display the exact same layout. Why are there only two columns shown on the huge screen of the iPad Pro? Ironically the web version used in Safari on the iPad displays what the app should look like. And take the Start screen: Why on earth are there no widgets available side-by-side? The stretched quick note widget in landscape on a 12.9" screen just looks absurd.

Don't forget that the old iPad version of Evernote (pre v10) had supported drag&drop. No more. And I doubt we will ever see things like multi-window (open more than one note!), real Pencil support and full support of the trackpad and keyboard. Yes, iPadOS is rooted in iOS. But that is no excuse to handle the iPad like a big iPhone - or like mobile apps at all (the iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard is my desktop computer). Evernote could have built-in iPad support in their "mobile framework" if they want to.

And don't forget the general layout and usage of the screen space! The iPad Pro is 12.9", a MacBook Pro 13". Why is the layout different? Why don't you show three columns like on the Mac (and the web version!)?

In general it seems there is not an iPadOS version of Evernote, just an iOS version that runs on iPadOS. It would be great if anyone from Evernote could confirm they know that there is iPadOS and that iPads are not big iPhones and that they actual at least think about developing a dedicated iPad version of Evernote (using 12.9" screens, full Pencil support, full multi-tasking/window support, full trackpad/mouse support, full keyboard support).

Yes, the new Noteshelf update fixed it (without any notice!) for newly created notes. But I have hundreds of existing notes that are now unreadable. I would have to do little changes for every single note to fix it and mess up the change dates on the way.

Any advances in the investigation? The last update did not fix the problem.

As stocky2605 said this workaround is impossible. All Noteshelf notes are read-only and it is not possible to change this. Next idea to fix this disaster? But please try it for yourself before posting.

So this seems to be not an individual problem but a know bug - that is not fixed for at least a year. It would be interesting to get updates on this - HERE at the forum! What was the reaction of the support? Just another tick on their errors list (the 1000th support request of the same bug will get a t-shirt)? Any known workaround procedure?

Are you implying they will stop supporting Evernote on the iPad? Because as there will be no iOS any longer for iPad, not supporting iPadOS would mean no Evernote on iPads anymore. That would be a huge decision.

Yeah, I think that is the point. I used GoodNotes and Notability (both have PDF export with OCR). These are the reference note taking apps on the iPad, but for some reason they don't offer direct export to Evernote. If Evernote is your personal archive for everything, the transfer of handwritten notes in another app should be simple, fast and straightforward. Noteshelf is the only app besides the big disappointment Penultimate that offers a live sync to Evernote. And I was surprised to find out that Noteshelf is currently on par with GoodNotes and Notability. It is really an insider tip.

I hope all these apps (including Evernote!) will adapt fast the new functionalities of iPadOS. This will be a real game changer (opening multiple documents side-by-side!).

Personally I use GoodNotes 5 for note taking. No sync into EN, but exports as pdf, including OCR for searching in the handwritten notes.

Sometimes the sync can take longer, but nothing gets lost. Way better than having to export manually every single note all the time like in GoodNotes and Notability. Export in these apps is not just a tap, it means several taps for each note. And if you change something in the note afterwards, you have to export it again and delete the first export. With Noteshelf (and Penultimate of course) you can edit a note in Noteshelf (Penultimate) as often as you want and every change will be automatically synced to the same note in Evernote.

The Noteshelf integration with Evernote is exactly the same as the one of Penultimate. Therefore the created notes are NOT editable in Evernote - only in Noteshelf. This thread is about Penultimate and Noteshelf works as a replacement for Penultimate - in every way.

Just to follow up on the alternatives: NoteShelf 2 is really what Penultimate was supposed to be. It has the exact same Evernote sync functionality as Penultimate (read-only notes that are automatically updated), but it has full Apple Pencil support and more or less everything GoodNotes and Notability offer. If you are still waiting for a proper update of Penultimate wait no longer and go for NoteShelf 2.

NoteShelf seems to be the only other handwriting app with full Evernote sync. So it is still possible for third party apps!

Yes, but it is not needed. As I said, the normal PDF that is generated by GoodNotes contains the graphics of the writing AND the text. That's why the text of the handwritten PDF from GoodNotes is searchable in Evernote.

I think this thread is still about a replacement of Penultimate and handwriting with Apple Pencil. So per definition not for Android.

I tried Notability and GoodNotes and I think GoodNotes is currently the best Penultimate replacement. It includes a handwriting indexing and the exported PDFs include the recognized text as well, so they are searchable in Evernote. But of course the actual exporting of each note(book) to Evernote needs many taps. I really hope Penultimate is not completely dead and Evernote will come up with a update with complete Pencil support.

I'm not concerned much with automatic syncing.  The share menu makes it easy to save into Evernote in native or pdf format

But handwriting in PDFs is not recognized and indexed in Evernote, right? I could go with Notability, but what's the point of uploading manually each note to Evernote if it is not even searchable?

There were no updates of Penultimate for a year now although there are lots of open issues:

• Insufficient support for Apple Pencil: It is still possible to leave marks with the hands. The input should be Pencil only - like it is in GoodNotes - to avoid any unwanted marks.
• Leaving the app (to the homescreen, to another app) and going back will bring you always to another page of the current note. Very annoying!
• Lasso cut & paste leaves marks.

But on the other hand the functionality of Penultimate is not integrated fully in Evernote. So is there any future for Penultimate? Will there be any further updates? With the new iPad Pros and iOS 11 Apple Pencil became essential for note taking. As a subscriber of Evernote Premium I would like to know what is the answer of Evernote to this development.
