Web Clip - Access Offline / Dead Link

Can web clips saved to Evernote still be accessed if the website they came from goes down (permanently)? I can't tell if the web clips I save are pulling data from the original site to keep the clip updated, or if they are a one-time text capture.

I would like to save a lot of recipes from websites to be sure I can access them later, but I don't know if a web clip will still be accessible if the website disappears.

Hi.  Web clips are usually complete copies of the visible web site that will continue to exist even if the original goes down.  While it seems unlikely on a recipe site,  it is possible for a website designer to take action to prevent complete copies being made,  so there are no absolute guarantees..

You might also like the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. https://archive.org/web/ which has historical copies of sites...

Web Clips are a static download. They are stored as they were when clipped.

The only connection to the original website is the URL saved in the note. You can visit the site again - which will show the current site. But this doesn’t change the clipped copy.

Example: A page is clipped when it showed freely. Later it is moved behind a paywall.

The clip will still show as it was - the URL will be redirected to a login page.

Be careful. I was just recently told here by forum members that web clips may NOT be a static download. I have several old notes that are missing data apparently because something about the original website they were clipped from changed or was removed. So far, it looks like the affected notes were all stored with HTML format. Parts of the notes are now gone.

In my experience, recipe Websites can be a real mess to access. They want you to go through their endless descriptions and family reunion photos and ad links and videos before showing you the recipe text. But Evernote's Web clipper now allows you to clip in Multi-Select mode, which would let you just grab, say, the title and the recipe. It's really very flexible, but it takes a minute of mousing around sometimes to get it to select just the piece that you want. I would think that those bits of basically just text would be permanent in Evernote.

What usually works pretty well is to use the „Print Recipe“ option most sites offer.

You skip most of the storytelling, and get the plain ingredients and prep instructions. Most of the time it will save nicely as PDF.

An html clip seems like it could have resources like images linked externally in the html based on what I'm seeing with users saying very old html clips are missing images.

If the source of the image changes ie <img src="https:///website.com/img.jpg"> then the image in the clip will be an empty space.
