My Update Concerns

Other than the things already mentioned by other users, here are my concerns about updating my legacy version to the latest version.  First, I did update once, when Evernote had it's first really big redesign of the user interface (that was some time ago, not the current one), and it was a disaster, much like now.  Second, with great difficulty, I managed to roll back to my previous version, which was working perfectly before I "updated."  Now my circumstances have changed, and I just don't have the extra time and energy that would be required to modify my workflow with Evernote, to accommodate the new "improved" way of working, as I am now a full-time caregiver, chauffeur, etc. for my spouse.  Third, here's what I like about my current workflow, and which I am determined to maintain, even if it means leaving the Evernote family at some point, after many years of use.  I have info coming in, on paper statements...receipts, bills, test results, emails with and without attachments, documents from online accounts, etc.  I have two notebooks set up, which are people-oriented, since there are two people in my household, and everything relates to one or the other, and some (note most) relate to both people.  Each of those notebooks has its own topic-oriented folders that I created myself, in the way I prefer, to organize the info (organized by default by date, by my ScanSnap document scanner, which I can change if I want to override the default date naming scheme for something of a more important, memorable, or permanent nature) so that I can browse the relevant folder when needed, and if I can't locate the item quickly that way by vendor or topic, then I can use the search function, at the top of the folder hierarchy for the relevant notebook, and at the root folder level, if I need to search in both notebooks.  When I want to create original content in Evernote, I use the note function, such as notes for a doctor's visit.  Yes I am well aware that I could just scan the page with my handwritten notes, but since they are usually just annotations on a test result or list of questions I've asked the doctor, I want to better organize the info and make it legible, so I just create a well-organized, readable note for that visit that I can refer back to, when needed.  I also use drag and drop to move documents from various sources into my Evernote notebooks and their folders.  Evernote is currently an excellent end-to end document/info integrated management system which I have recommended to many others over the years, and integrates well with Fujitsu's ScanSnap scanners, and is much simpler than something like MS Sharepoint Portal and its successors, which are much bigger than the average individual or small business user needs.  So, after reading quite a lot about how the new update is organized to work, and reading what other people have experienced, I plan to just continue using my legacy version of Evernote until it can no longer accommodate my preferred workflow, and then I will export my data to a system that gives me the freedom to organize things the way I prefer.  I will continue to monitor comments here in the meantime in the hope that things will improve.  I used to work in I.T. support, and still do from time to time in retirement, so I understand all the forces at play here about why systems change, to maintain functionality and security.  There's no need to rehash those with me, thanks.

In general, v10 is the closest thing you'll find to Legacy Evernote, but perhaps for your personal use case there is something better out there. However, there are a ton of options out there to try and nothing is an exact match to Legacy Evernote. I've spent scores -- if not hundreds -- of hours trying out different tools to see if I can find something that might work better for me than v10 and I always keep coming back to it, but my use cases are different from yours so that might not be applicable to you.

...and the major drawback is:  you use Legacy for many essential tasks.  What will you do when Legacy stops working?  Which is will do at some unspecified time in the future.  You have to at least try the new version;  I'm now using it daily without (touch wood) any major issues yet...

…. beside you can’t use legacy for any Task - because Tasks were only introduced with v10. If you try to open Tasks with legacy, it will tell you the data format is not supported.

There are many features in v10 that are unique, not found in legacy. Who is just looking for replacing existing features is missing out - big.

@secolburn, I just want to say first that I sympathize with your situation. For others here, there's a book called The 36-Hour Day whose title says it all. (That's 36 hours' worth of tasks in 24 hours, not 36 hours in which to do 24 hours' worth.)

Based on what you've said about your workflow, I don't think there's anything about Evernote v. 10 that would not be compatible with it. There are still notebooks, stacks, and tags, and search works great. (I'm a little unclear about "Each of those notebooks has its own topic-oriented folders," since Evernote doesn't have "folders.") I think you could still file, locate, and search things as you have done. I don't have any experience with ScanSnap, so I can't comment on that aspect. One thing that I like about v. 10 for taking medical notes is the ability to use 3 levels of headers (small, medium, large) to help organize. Backlinks are great also: if you have a kind of master note titled "Physical therapy," for instance, and then a group of notes that it links to dealing with various therapists, exercises, or whatever, each of those notes would have a backlink to get right back to the master note.

The new interface will make you look around to find things at first, but I didn't have much trouble getting used to it. You don't have to use Tasks if you don't need them--I don't, and it's not a problem. The Home page might well not be useful, or might have more than you need, but I don't think you ever have to look at it if you don't want to. If you click on Notes in the left column, you'll see your familiar list of all notes; click Notebooks or Tags and see them. When you quit Evernote and return, it will show the view you last used, not the Home page.

As someone suggested, you could create a new Free account to try it out. It might be a better use of time to try out the Web client in the browser of your choice (https://www.evernote.com/client/web, then log in). It will let you access your existing notes through the new interface and get used to it.

I hope this is some help. You probably will not be able to use Legacy indefinitely, and getting used to an entirely new note-taker might be harder than getting used to Evernote v. 10, as somebody here said.
