Hsewell22 1
Hi all, Long time Penultimate user (9+ years) and have loved it. I recently got a brand new iPad and my penultimate will no longer download a note to a pdf. The option to do so is there like it has always been, but it doesn’t ever download it. I’ve deleted the app and reinstalled several times, I’ve updated my iPad, and turned the power off/on again multiple times. Nothing seems to fix it. I can send a link, but I can’t download to pdf. Has anyone else had this issue? Does anyone know how to fix it? I want to continue using penultimate as I have thousands of notes on there, but I will be forced to switch if I can’t send documents. 1 Link to comment
Level 5* gazumped 11,709 Posted October 14, 2023 Level 5* Share Posted October 14, 2023 Hi. Penultimate is still an Evernote app available for iPad, but has not been updated for over a year. The 'best' way to capture and OCR handwriting may depend on your personal usage - would us prefer to use paper and scan the results? A smart pen or pad? A separate mobile app syncing back to Evernote? You should do an internet search for your budget, OS and available devices, but other Evernote users have suggested these options: 🔹Goodnotes - https://www.goodnotes.com (save OCR'd PDF to Evernote) 🔹Livescribe - https://uk.livescribe.com/ 🔹Nebo - https://www.nebo.app 🔹Rocketbook - https://getrocketbook.co.uk 🔹Wacom - https://www.wacom.com/en-gb Link to comment
Level 5 PinkElephant 8,188 Posted October 14, 2023 Level 5 Share Posted October 14, 2023 Handwriting in a pdf must already be OCRed before importing it if it should be searchable in EN. The OCR done by EN will not process handwriting in pdf files. The EN OCR will only work on handwriting when contained in picture files (JPG PNG GIF). GoodNotes does it’s own OCR and exports the results with the pdf file into EN. About the others listed no idea, have no experience. Link to comment
laurence.glazier 107
I switched from Penultimate to Apple Notes to get the Copy as Text feature. Share from Apple Notes to Evernote works well and the handwriting is searchable. Perhaps too much so (false positives). 1 Link to comment
Level 5 PinkElephant 8,188 Posted October 15, 2023 Level 5 Share Posted October 15, 2023 GoodNotes builds the OCR while you are writing with the pencil. They claim you need to recognize the text during writing, analyzing the movement. It would improve the recognition rate. Don‘t know if this is true, but the search is pretty good. They have a full search in GoodNotes itself. It’s good, but lacking the options to pinpoint the search as in EN. Link to comment

Level 5 PinkElephant 8,188 Posted October 26, 2023 Level 5 Share Posted October 26, 2023 You can try support, but I doubt anybody can do anything about it. This app is old code, and those who understood probably left with everybody else when the company relocated from the US to Italy. Link to comment
Rkobat 0
Same problem. I switched to Noteshelf from now on. It's easy to export notes to PDF to share them with others. I used to use Penultimate for music writing, and then I could export my notes to PDF and share them with my band. No more. Link to comment
