Last Update shows KERNEL error LEGACY Version no longer available.

Recommended Posts

Hi,

last update crippled my Evernote beyond repair. The new version simply wont run on my Windows 7. As an emergency procedure I looked for the Legacy Version for Windows and found out that it is no longer available. The Page no longer exists. Has it been pulled down or is it a Webmasters mistake (broken Link)?

Please let us know BEFORE we uninstall anything, that the next version wont run. I use Evernote every day , i relay on it, its my work, its my everything because it stores ALL MY NOTES. I can't simply not access it because of an update. At least give me a heads up. I am a paying user. It costs me 60€/year so I pay more than many others (for some very unjust and strange reason!) . Why do we get this treatment? I read about other users being ditched like this too.

Kind regards,

MK

Hi.  AFAIK security updates and technical support for Windows 7 ended on 14 January 2020,  so I think you may be a little bit of an edge case - and will be even more so if you go back to the equally deprecated and unsupported Evernote Legacy.  It's not unknown for updates to go wrong,  so my first suggestion would be to completely remove Evernote from your system using Revo Uninstaller and retry downloading and installing the update from Evernote.com.

If you had any unsynced notes on your system,  you will lose these with the uninstall,  but if Evernote won't load I don't know of a way to back them up first.

Legacy should be available from online sources if you need it,  but I'd suggest you try to avoid going there if you're already used to v10.  All the new features like tasks and RTE will not work in the older version.

I saw elsewhere in the forums that it was purposefully pulled to continue encouraging us to move away from the non-V10 version. I've seen comments in the forums that say allowing Legacy to sync to EN servers might be gone before the end of the year.

You should be able to access your notes via the web until you can work out the solution that will get you working again from the Desktop app (whether using Windows 10 or finding the Legacy program again or migrating to a different solution that will run on Windows 7.)

There is a link that still works and allows you to download legacy. Windows

I am like you as soon as they pull legacy I am toast. I am actively looking for an alternative and so far I have had no luck. All are following the same direction of travel which might be great for collaboration but that is not what I need. I will not renew my subscription in August to Evernote.

Anybody who is running Win7 can upgrade to Win10. Technically this works. If you still need Win 7 for some old software, you can install a virtual machine on Win 10, and install Win 7 into it.

Officially EN v10 always had Windows 10 as minimum system requirement. That it worked on Windows 7 until now you can see as borrowed time. It seems the lease is over.

Same here. Last year I had to inquire why they raised the price exponentially and they gave me some made-up reason, I was about to ditch them but then decided I have sooo many notes I have no alternative but to pay them until I migrate my notes out of Evernote and to a Mac alternative or the Microsoft solution. This year I will not renew my Professional subscription since it went from 24,- EUR to 59,90 EUR / Year. I read somewhere that Pro users are paying for all those who use the 'Free' version. So we get punished for our loyalty. On another Post I opened, I asked how much Pro users pay and was surprised to see that it varies a lot. I assume based on location (like YouTube Premium does), so since I live in Germany I pay 59,90 EUR and not 18 USD like others do.

Yesterday I upgraded to Windows 10 and installed Office 365. I'll see what OneNote will do for me. It fulfills my requirements and costs me nothing.

Thank you EVERNOTE for showing me the way out to other alternative Software and Apps!

It's a very different architecture to Evernote,  but you may find it better for you: - your choice.  It's really not necessary to announce your departures here - the Forums are supported by other users,  who have taken the decision to stay - and visited by others who come back to snipe from time to time for amusement's sake.  Evernote will be monitoring its subscription losses,  and may be forced to amend its pricing again if it loses too much income.  But that won't happen for a while if at all.

Anyone who has a paid subscription pays for the free users.  This has always bugged me, but not enough to jump ship.

I don’t know who is paying $18 USD, but it is not those in the US.  I think I paid around $70 last year for personal and then $90ish when I went to professional.  I don’t renew until later this year but I expect I’ll need a stiff drink before I see the new price.

I hope OneNote does work for you.  I tried it and didn’t like it but others here have and seem happy with it.
