But those that do have a disability that makes the new UI a disadvantage for them should register this. Anyone who has impaired vision and is disadvantaged by the new UI needs to underline the need for this to be taken into account.
We are relying on beta testers to monitor this since it has not been released yet.
But I still don't get it, why should anyone accept lower readability than before, is it just for cosmetic reasons, or am I missing something?

Why do people invest in high-contrast monitors only to have UI designers degrade the contrast back to that of an 80’s LCD monitor or less?
It's important to note that poor contrast can be a serious issue for anyone using (mobile) devices in real-world light conditions, such as bright sunlight, not just those with impaired vision.

? I think if you are using the inteface, you count as a tester! I reported it.
I haven't got it yet, except for 5 minutes by mistake.
Anyway, I hope they keep an eye on this thread too...

Release note 10.72.2 says: Fixes a problem where some notes would incorrectly show as recently updated even after being viewed.
@Federico Simionato this is NOT solved: I've seen it twice by quickly stepping through the note list a few times 😞

Agreed - that column's stuck although there are 'movable' bars each side of the Titles column, they do not allow changes.
Strange that the beta testers haven't noticed / reported that fixed title width yet

This is the biggest thing driving me nuts so far. I should be able to resize the Note Title column.
Yes, the fixed column width for the note title is disturbing my workflow too! I wonder if this was intentional or just forgotten...

Yup, earlier someone mentioned a problem with the left pane icons when it is minimized, but they look fine now. Also, the block on the home page looks fixed as well. They are definitely tweaking. I'm still hoping for a compressed data view and better contrast in the left pane.
I hope they don't forget to tweak the dark theme too ...

I agree that the contrast is reduced which could cause issues for both older people the those who are visually impaired. I'm also not a fan of all of the wasted space. Otherwise I think it looks clean and I like it overall particularly the typefaces.
If there is one advantage of Electron web apps, it’s the ease with which themes can be created using CSS style sheets.
As already mentioned, If EN is serious about a modern UI, they should provide more than two themes or much better, allow users or the community to create or adapt their own themes. Since these are Cascading style sheets, only a portion of them may be made public to keep it simple and safe for the end user. So the real meaning of a modern UI is flexibility and customizability, in contrast to the rigidity of a 1980s UI.
For example, Obsidian is one of many web based (note) apps that provides dozens of themes, both from the developers and the community, which can be used to customize the app’s appearance to your liking.
Here an example of a Obsidian style sheet, very simple and self explaining, just change the green values to your liking:
/* Change the font size of the editor */ .CodeMirror pre { font-size: 16px; } /* Change the font size of the preview */ .markdown-preview-view { font-size: 18px; }
/* Change the background color of the editor */ .CodeMirror { background-color: #f8f8f8; }

It's perhaps worth remembering that operating systems have their own themes designed for people with less than perfect eyesight (e.g high contrast themes on Windows 11). It would be nice to know whether the new UI plays nicely with these themes. I'd only give the current UI about 6 out of 10 when using those themes.
While it may be possible to implement the Windows 11 high contrast themes, there is a simpler solution. IMHO, there have been no visibility complaints about the current dark and light themes. Therefore, just providing an additional theme with the current colors and font sizes would be an easy solution since it's already there and approved (in terms of readability) by the community...

Thanks, it was hidden by my dark theme viewer
edit: looks good, apart from the grey font. But I don't see any dark theme screenshot 😞

Good idea to make it customizable!
If the stylesheets were accessible, the EN community could build and provide specific themes themselves...

The blog post speaks of "A stunning new user interface ... the in-app experience [users] know and love, but repackaged into a lightweight and contemporary design. But don’t worry, we’re not moving buttons, rearranging features, or disrupting existing workflows." @Bill Myers, I think that's all the indication we've gotten of what the redesign is trying to do. "Lightweight and contemporary" I take to mean darker-gray-on-lighter-gray text, small fonts, and extra blank space, which seems to be the current iteration of the "Modern" UI movement. At any rate, that's what I saw in my brief accidental exposure.
This will only make Evernote harder to use for me, not impossible or unhealthy, as it will be for some people. (I wonder if the EU has an equivalent of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and if these types of UIs violate it for people with visual difficulties.) For the life of me, I can't understand the point in making it harder to distinguish, find, and use different elements on what is basically a Web page. If anyone here has any experience in this kind of design, please enlighten me. In particular, please point me toward any documentation of users actually liking such redesigns, either for aesthetic or practical reasons. And yeah, call me Grandpa Simpson if you want to. But back up this aesthetic with something concrete.
Yeah, it seems that the UI 'artists' at BS prioritize aesthetics over ergonomics, which is becoming a real plague these days.
In fact, I even wonder if anyone has beta tested the new dark theme at all. I can't believe this is considered an improvement, neither aesthetically nor erogonomically.
For instance the note background color in the new dark theme is fully black which looks ugly and less readable. Please take the 'old' theme's background colors which were perfect for optimal vision.
@Federico Simionato Please give us access to (some) stylesheets so that we can configure the colors and fontsizes ourselves.

I'm wondering who needed this new GUI, and are there any benefits to these changes? Are there no other priorities that need to be addressed?

I've been using it on Windows for about a month and haven't had these issues so I think something has gone wrong with the roll out. Maybe 2 versions clashing or something.
Most of the issues I've noticed over the last couple of weeks have been small like misaligned buttons/elements etc. I think column dragging is being sorted though.
I’m glad to hear that, but it would be great if there were more options for font size and themes beyond just light and dark...
Actually, the current V10 dark theme could be one of these...

Hey folks! Thank you all very much for your feedback!
We only wanted to enable the new UI for those who opted in to test it, but mistakenly enabled it for many more users. Apologies, we've now reverted that and you should see the old version unless you opted in. We'll use feedback from the beta testers to improve it.
If you want to keep exploring the new UI, you can put your email address here (needs to be the one linked to your Evernote account): https://waz9zvkd1f2.typeform.com/to/tvTldYzV#source=forum
Thanks for bringing back the old dark theme: it is so much easier on the eyes...

yeah, I loved the 'old' V10 dark theme : it had the proper font size, proper note background color, resizable column sizes for the note list
I hope that different themes will be available with configurable fontsizes, otherwise please bring back the old GUI

Not slow enough to my taste!
Two bugs I encountered the second they flipped the switch on the featureflag for the new UI: I cannot change the width of columns in the view of notes of Evernote anymore on 2 of my computers. And my tags column got SCROLLBARS-per-row in the note list/view itself...
I hope they fix this SOON, cause my workflow is being damaged (again) by changes Evernote did not test thouroughly it seems.
⚠️ @Federico Simionato Due to these 2 big bugs in the new UI, I am currently SERIOUSLY handicapped by SERIOUS bugs in the this product right now, for which I pay SERIOUS money. It's my main business productivity tool. Not amused! I didn't even install this update myself, it decided itself that it was stable enough to update.
I reported it, and it got Ticket Id #3812925
yes, a variable title width in the note list is absolutely essential!
The font size of the note list which was perfect before, has been reduced. Please make it configurable.
Zooming should go in much smaller steps, I can't use it to solve the fixed font size problem.

The app should distinguish between note changes made by the user and those made by the system, which are invisible and irrelevant to the user. As others said, the problem occurs not only after converting from the old to the new RTE format, but also with minor internal (format) changes afterwards.

OK, I'll have a deeper look into this. You may be right because my changes normally touch the begin of note's text (newest changes are always on the top of a note to see the current state of the topic 😉)
This would be great if "to avoid blocking other clients" covers API changes, too. My experience is that API changes (from Make (formerly called "Integromat"), Filterize (now suspended - as a result of increasing problems with EN changes) or IFTTT (that I use rarely)) are rejected with error messages like
- EDAMSystemException: RATE_LIMIT_REACHED: {"errorCode":19,"message":"Attempt updateNote where RTE room has already been open for note: 5c3a5028-3664-4302-b644-783f73eb0a9d","rateLimitDuration":60}
I still have a question about legacy API behaviour:
How were note conflicts prevented when the API changed a note at the same time as other client editors? Wasn't there also a problem?

As long as the room is open for this note other clients may display the note - but are blocked from changing anything because a room cannot be opened once more...
-
This allows to receive small changes from server and display them immediately. Looks nice - but has no real advantage 😉
-
hmm, this is not what I experience... When I open the same note on my PC and my phone, both can change the note concurrently...

So you're saying that the notes that get marked as edited merely by viewing them are only ones created by Web Clipper, or at least created from Websites. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason for me, other than possibly older notes being converted to the new structure.
I've also seen this in recent months with notes that had already been converted to the new format

Sure - so how are we restructuring the database to generate these codes again?
I see no reason to "restructure" the database, but apart from that, enex should be extended with these two tags just to make the export complete and consistent. Enex is an export format, not only intended for evernote import but especially for archival / backup of your data. As I already mentioned, my own enex to html implementation generates proper html, showing even more info than V10 desktop does (location, map).

New UI - Experiences Bad and Good
in Evernote General Discussions
Posted
IMHO, this is a false dichotomy. EN can simply allow users to customize their UI settings like most contemporary note apps do (even the legacy Evernote had it).
As I mentioned before, the simplest solution is to make some of the stylesheets accessible, this gives optimal flexibility, everybody happy.
If they are reluctant to do that, they should at least let users configure the system font (from the whole Inter list), fontsizes, font colors and background colors
How come a 100€/year app cannot do what the free note taking apps can?
