TextExpander Question

Recommended Posts

I use TextExpander extensively in Evernote. Snippets with plain text work fine, but I am unable to create snippets create headers. For example, if the snippet enters ## Heading 2, it enters the text with the hash marks, but it doesn't format the text as a header.

I have tried using plain text and formatted text.

I think all the markdown type formatting commands requirte a real hitting of the space bar, enter or tab rather than a pasted character.

I haven't used textexpander but you should see if it is possible to emulate sending a key stroke with textexpander.

I use textexpander and this used to be possible. Just tried it a few different ways placing tabs and spaces after the ## and nothing.

I'll mention it and see what others say. I also tried copy pasting an Evernote heading and as formatted text and it kind of works but doesn't make it a proper header.

I use PhraseExpress for the same purposes. In PhraseExpress you can configure how it pastes the texts, via emulated keystrokes, via pasting, other methods. With my settings it works perfectly with the #, ##, ### heading prefixes.

I suspect your TextExpander uses the clipboard to inject text or another block-based injection, thus bypassing Evernote registering the 'typing of your text'. You might look into your settings if TextExpander offers the way of injection I use in PhraseExpress.

I agree with the analysis, but I don't see how it can be configured in TextExpander.

As a poor workaround, after pasting, you can delete and retype the space after the ##  (or highlight the space) and replace it with a space.

Alternatively, you can use Keyboard Maestro for this, which can submit keystrokes for processing.
