Web Clipper - Bookmark Type Problem

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

Am I the online one trying to use Evernote to save interesting bookmarks and getting very strange images as thumbnails? Anyone know a fix or how to manually change the thumbnail of the note?

Clip formats types explained here: https://help.evernote.com/hc/en-us/articles/209125827-Clip-formats

Below the image of the website and the automatic image inserted as the bookmark icon which is not to be found anywhere on the website itself, wow. 😛

Thanks

It is not the web clipper having a problem - it's your home network or computer having it. The site links in the background to ads and tracking - nothing uncommon, the devs of "Free" websites offering a service finance their operation by selling your call to the most interested parties. They then deliver advertisement and try to follow you even when changing websites again. WebClipper can't always determine which information belongs to the site, and which belongs to ads. It is not necessary you see them - they are there, as you clip proves.

If you would run a proper protection agains ads and tracking, the clip would look like this:

Wow, what an awful, wrong and unfounded answer! Incredible. Please test yourself before posting publicly.

(And BTW, you accidentally educated a person very well versed in this area running this on max restriction Firefox, enhanced protection including the "strict" option. Nevertheless this issue has been there since the beginning, i.e. different platforms, different browsers, etc.)

BTW, here is the clickable link in case someone wants to try, but as mentioned, this happens with many websites.

Also it would be interesting to know the working of the automatic thumbnail assignment by Evernote. Sometimes they are hard to change even for one's own notes. For instance forwarding an email message will pick the smallest image (icon of linked in) and blows it up as the main note thumbnail. ;)

The thumbnail process is automatic, happens on the cloud server and is hard to influence. We sort of had it figured out, but EN seems to "optimize" the process from time to time, and then it is back to square 1. The last trick was to create a note, just with title and the picture you want toi be thumbnail. Exit it to make it sync, wait until the thumbnail shows. Then copy everything else you want in the note from the initial note, and paste it into the new one.

This seems to work most of the time - but we all agree it is a real PITA.

There is a long and old feature request thread about choosing the thumbnail. You can search for it and vote it up another notch - for all this will do.

Sure, you know it all. But you are plagued by the wrong pictures.

Find the mistake ...

Being able to control the thumnail image that appears in the snippet or card view is problematic. However, if you simplify the note (ie bookmark),using the magic wand that appears if you click the grey "Web clip" border, you can then delete the picture. If you are lucky (or maybe it is fixed in 10.53.2) the thumnail will also disappear from the snippet. You can then add an image of your choice, which should then also appear as the thumbnail in the snippet view.

Maybe I can help you with your eyesight - which proves as does the URL you posted that this picture is a legit content of the page you have bookmarked. Why it was selected as thumbnail remains a secret of the gremlins in the cloud servers intestines:

Just for the record I also got a 'correct' bookmark when I tried clipping - but many times clips don't work as I'd like,  or (occasionally) at all,  so its necessary to get inventive and use copy/ paste for the URL and a third party app (or more copy/ paste) to grab content.  Given the different languages web pages speak these days it seems like magic to be able to clip most of them at all.  Evernote still seems best in class in that area...
