The parent tag should search for all notes that are marked with child tags.
Or at least there should be such a setting

Happy for it to be an option (as I think it is in the legacy) but would not personally want this behaviour.

I would like this setting very much. Though I suppose one way to do this is tag all child tags with the parent tag as well - something I have not done yet myself.

I prefix my tagnames to reflect the hierarchy; for example Budget,  Budget-Housing, Budget-HousingUtilities     
I can search for tag:Budget*

The parent tag can be used as a tag in its own right. If you have „Computer“ and below it „PC“ and „Mac“, you can tag all others simply with the parent tag.

Thus it depends on you tagging strategy if you want the search to drill down or not.

Personally I think an extension to the search syntax could do the job, with an operator that decides whether to only include the exact level, or to drill down to child tags as well.
