Search quirks

Recommended Posts

Searching for the word "glasses" brings up all notes containing that word, plus some (but not all) notes containing the word "eyeglasses." If I then add the word "glasses" to those notes not found previously, they will then come up in the search with the word highlighted, in addition to highlighting of "glasses" in the term "eyeglasses."  Can someone explain this behavior?  Thanks!

Looks like embedded "glasses" is indexed (highlighted) only if "glasses" appears elsewhere in the note.

Please add further details. What Evernote platform does this occur on (Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, web)? Is the text you are getting hits on actual text, or text obtained via OCR on an image?

Remember that in-note search (e.g. Windows Ctrl+F) is different from note search. A note search on "glasses" should not match notes that contain "eyeglasses" unless they also contain "glasses" (except possibly in the case of OCR'd text)..

For a glasses search EN will only find notes that has glasses in them, and EN then highlights any instance of glasses in the notes.  Create a note with only eyeglasses in it and EN will not find it if you do a glasses search.

That's right: the note was found because  it contains "glasses" as well as "eyeglasses". Once found ,inside the note, any occurrence of "glasses" is then highlighted (highlighting is a separate facility from search). But if a note contains "eyeglasses" but not "glasses", then it won't be found in a search for "glasses"..

Thanks for the info. Is there a way to override this and include embedded instances of the search term?

Nope.  Text searches only start from the beginning of words.  You can wildcard to the end, but no middle searches.
