  1. Ian Small seems to be very genuine and transparent. It feels like he is not trying to act like he has all the answers or everything it great, he is really lowering his defenses and coming out as vulnerable as can be for a CEO which is such a rare characteristic lately.

Great job with these videos, it is really creating a synergy among the community and the developers in my opinion.

    Thank you!

Maybe It is because of how many notes you keep on it. I don't have very many and mine runs pretty well.

    12,147 notes is a lot.

Now I am up to 20K notes and depending on the computer speed varies significantly. I installed on a desktop the other week since my laptop was not working, and it was really fast on that computer. I wouldn't complain about that speed for sure and that was a decent computer as far as processor and RAM goes.

But the key to Evernote is to "remember everything" right so that means if you use it like your brain's extension you will eventually get to high number of notes, thus, it should be a fairly quick system no matter the size of the database or the number of notes in my opinion.

I have Links to Evernote in a Excel-Sheet. I would like that it opens the Evernote-Desktop not the Browser (Chrome) to watch the note. What can i do?

I have a workaround that works for me from V6.7 on the Windows app. When I reference Evernote links in Todoist, if I select the note and right click with the mouse and select copy internal link, it will copy the WEB LINK that starts with https://www.evernote.com/shard/.....

    BUT,

If I do CTRL + ALT + L keyboard shortcut within the note, it copies the APP link that starts with evernote:///view/....

I am not sure why but it works for me. Again, this might be an older version thing too with the Windows app.

    Try that out.

There's a story about Henry Ford starting out and customers were asking  for faster horses.

    Yup!

Another similarity, when people wanting CD | DVD drives in their laptops. Apple cut them out, whether you like them or not but they knew tech is going away from hard-media. You can cry about your CD | DVD backups or stuff all day long but it too became an obsolete product.

I am not saying "notebooks" are obsolete, all I am saying is that everybody should have an open mind about ways to do something better even if it is against our current methods, beliefs and biases.

Our biases control a lot ... and I think this is definitely one of them.

Tag People:  Stop suggesting tags to people who have made it clear they want more notebooks

I hate to say this and this is also going against what you are telling us not to do but I must say it:

    This is similar to:

When Apple introduced the soft keys in a phone (introduction of iPhone), people saying, quit giving us soft | electronic keys, give us bigger keys so we can type with hard keys with our Blackberrys.

My point is, (which I posted before) folder structure (which I say is the same as notebooks) is the old style of thinking. After MS DOS, with the Windows introduction, we all got programmed to have a folder structure. And it is a really hard habit to break, everybody can visualize it easily and get accustomed to it quickly as it mimics our psychical world.

It is coming from our physical world and the way we see things. But electronics world does not really need to mirror the physical world. A file does not need to be in one space unlike how we file a physical paper.

A file, document, a note can belong to many categories. Thus, the need for tags. Due to the folder | notebook structure, a note can be in only one notebook. So it is actually against the natural way our brains file things. We pull information based on categories which resemble tags.

I do understand the people who wants more notebooks and want to stick with notebooks, for the "tag people", that is like requesting faster horses, because you want your horse carriage to go faster. Other see it; dude there is a way better way of doing this, if you would only give it a try....

I used to be able to use TaskClone to Integrate Wunderlist and Evernote?

That would have been my first resource as I use TaskClone with Todoist and Evernote however it is not on their task app list yet.

I think there will be a way to sync Microsoft To-do with OneNote eventually, I saw couple of user requests when I did a search. It also works with Microsoft Flow, maybe look into that too along with Zapier and IFTTT. But I think this will be a tough integration to do at this time.

no other windows application I know of uses the Escape key to close a window

Just an FYI, MS Outlook new email composing window will close with the ESC key.

However, I would agree with this request too. Although, I generally do not pop notes out, and but when I do, I have accidentally hit ESC many times. Up voting.

Actually I never understood the issue.
I rarely type a full tag name.  I start typing rec and a dropdown list is displayed to select an existing tag.

I am with you on that one. I never created similar tags because I misspelled it or used uppercase. I start typing and select the pop up, hit enter, it is done.

Also, with the 80 | 20 rule, out of my 297 tags I probably use 20% of it most of the time, so those tags I know by heart by now. Plus my text expander helps a lot, for example "tgday" gives Tag:"!Daily" or "tgch" gives tag:"Cheat Sheet"  in the search box anyway so I don't have to remember the spelling, I just need to remember my text shortcuts.

I have had the new Surface Go for a few days and I still didn't manage to start Evernote.

Somehow it starts but it stays in the background. There is a process EvernoteTray.exe but there is no window, no UI.

There is also an icon in the task bar (right side). When I try to open Evernote from here a message window opens with this message:

"Evernote is not ready to accept clips. Please open the main application and try again."

I have installed Evernote from the Microsoft Store which is what Microsoft recommends to save battery life and security. I have not tried with the standard Evernote version for Windows.

I don't have Surface Go but this similar problem happens to me sometimes at my home PC. I click on the app, no UI and I will even get the reminder pop ups.

I generally do the CTRL + ALT + DEL to go the task manager and END TASK for all Evernote related items. Generally, there are many processes running, so I end them all and retry it. See if that works for you.

I think he very clearly and accurately described how many of us feel about Evernote lately and why the rebranding effort hit a nerve for many.

He does make really good points for sure.

I think the "legacy app" statement was powerful, if it goes towards people having to use it because it is time consuming to export 10,000 notes into a new system, that will be a big shame for Evernote. I hope the development of the app follows the marketing efforts and the new logo for sure. We shall see.

You see, everyone's tastes are different :)

I think that for storing documents (attachments), Onenote is actually better than most other similar apps. They can be placed anywhere, accompanied with notes, etc. You're not being forced into a particular layout. And I use plaintext in-line tags, so finding them works the same in any system (I generally dislike having to assign pre-canned tags from a menu).

What irritates me about Onenote are other things, slow sync (although it's been improving lately), no built-in alerts (I am not going to create an Outlook tasks for every reminder, besides I can't do it on iOS anyway), the whole concept of "Printouts", the fact that if I annotate a screenshot or a PDF printout inside Onenote the ink isn't grouped with underlying image so I better not move it accidentally,  and many other small annoyances.

But as I said.. I am no longer looking at it as the ultimate single tool, but something that supports my overall workflow. If I was using Google ecosystem on a daily basis at work, I'd use it for personal stuff as well and make it work. Makes things significantly easier.

I just tried inserting a PDF into a note in OneNote, and I must admit it is not bad! Moving the PDF within the note is kind of nice and you can place two PDFs side by side which can provide really nice comparison opportunities. And I am not a fan of the PDF viewer that was introduced in 6.8 (windows app) which is another reason why I am on 6.7. The PDF in OneNote looks like how it is in Evernote pre 6.8. I may play with OneNote a little bit more from that sense.

Another thing about OneNote that was not sitting well with me is the forced page size. You started with a letter size page no matter how big or long your note was. It seems like it is now a big blank canvas but still feels like I am wasting space when I type in a short note. I like the look of Evernote notes when it comes to that. This complaint (!) sounds stupid but that's how I felt at the time. :)

Onenote’s tight integration with Exchange, Skype, Teams, Outlook Tasks etc. just makes it too valuable of a project tool.

I agree, that is a huge advantage. I am trying to use more Microsoft Teams with my team and I just added the OneNote tab to a channel. I can easily see the benefit there by itself. You can have project notes that everybody can see and edit etc.

I used to use OneNote and I think it is a great note taking app but I think it falls short for storing documents and tagging for my use at least. I will continue to play with it under the Microsoft Teams tab to see if it has changed a lot since my times back in 2013ish.

    Bonjour,

    Merci

I use Evernote to manage appointments with VR reminder a day or two ago. Can we write notes on a calendar? This would make my appointments appear on this calendar, as on a notebook.

This is what Google Translate gave me so I am not positive.

But I think, you want to use IFTTT or Zapier to sync your reminders to a calendar app. I would start with checking those two services out.

There have been so many unfixed bugs in the Windows program for the last year or so that many users felt that the highly-touted rebranding was an indicator of misplaced priorities.

Nicely stated. We do not know what exactly they are working on or where the real priorities are. We only "perceive" what is happening behind the doors by what is being shown. They might have been working on an amazing V7.0 for Windows and just putting band aids on 6.x versions, we do not have a way of knowing. It is an "indicator" like you said.

And when people are so frustrated with the core functions of the app such as disappearing cursor, notes disappearing, or being overwritten, a marketing effort that does not solve these issues frustrate people. I  think that is easy to comprehend.

Going back to the sports analogy, your team is sucking, they need to be practicing shooting, improve passing etc. Instead, they announce that they have new jerseys and been practicing a new celebration move. You don't know if during training they are practicing the fundamentals you expect but the announcement make you believe that their focus was somewhere else.

There is information you try to relay and there is the perceived information. Perceived information may be significantly different that what is going on or what you are trying to relay sometimes.

Nonetheless, I sure hope the rebranding is getting the employees pumped up and it is a new direction for addressing many fundamental issues that have been frustrating especially windows app users.

I made a note but after some time I found that there are 2 conflicting notes with respect to that note.

Should I delete them? What to do?

Are you using a third party app to modify notes? The reason I am asking is that it happens to me when I use "Taskclone" which takes my checklist items and syncs them to Todoist but if I modify the note while this process is happening I will have a conflicting note as they are also modifying my note to put a symbol in front of the check boxes.

Another thing to consider when dealing with conflicting notes is 3rd party apps that can edit your notes.

Supposedly Trello is ranked 1st, but I don't buy it.

I love Trello but I would consider it in a complete different category. I cannot see how it can be an alternate to Evernote, you can use it in conjunction with Evernote for sure and it can supplement nicely for any Kanban board style planning. I just can't see it being an alternate to Evernote...for me. I am sure someone can come up with a way to use it, I couldn't at this time.

How about scripting to select a random note from the list.  I could do it on my Mac.
I'd use a "random thoughts" tag to limit the list to my inspirational/serendipity notes.

I would love to. But I use Windows at work. Mac is at home for personal use. Thinking about it, I should give it a try at home. I know you have shared some of your scripts in a topic before, is that one of those you shared?

    Hi,

I am wondering how, if there is a way to display random notes?

Like many users here, we have many notes, I wonder if there is a way to display random notes, so to just trigger serendipity moments:)?

    Best regards

    Moses

I would love to have something like this too.Discovering a note that you completely forgot is fun, sometimes powerful and can lead to new ideas. I wish the notes were numbered, so at least I could generate a random number in Excel and go to that note. Even that would work.

To generate something close to this, I select ALL NOTES view and scroll to a random location to see the notes in that section. Or select different arbitrary tags from the tag view to see what it would generate. But of course, it is not as random as it could be when you are selecting the scroll location or the tags since subconsciously I would make choices without even noticing.

I have several questions and comments about this forum in general. I can't post in the Community Announcements. Right here, Evernote General Discussions, seems to be the least-bad place to post. Have I missed a better place?

This is "General" discussions, so I would think you should be able to comment about the forum as well, since it will be Evernote related. Go for it I say!

  20. 1 minute ago, DTLow said:

I'm thinking there might be a different set of priorities being applied.

For yourself, purple highlighting might be the #1 priority, and you find it unbelievable that Evernote hasn't implemented it.
For Evernote Marketing, the #1 priority was the Brand.
For Evernote Management?  Maybe ensuring there are sufficient funds for the ongoing bills?
For Mac Support/Developing? Preparing for the upcoming OS upgrade?

    I understand and get that.

But if the software is not usable, meaning losing content, cursor disappearing etc. that is opposite of the mission statement (or whatever you want to call it)....remember everything. Every department will have different priorities and they will not match mine at all but when the CORE value is not working, people should switch priorities.

So when it is about the core function of Evernote which is working as a note taking app, is not operating properly, I would expect priority shift. I am not talking about feature request, or an inconvenience, a core function.

At least, that's how I operate in my business. When there is a safety violation or an issue, my priority is already dictated by that. Core problem.

One might argue that, those versions are still working etc. To me they are not unfortunately.

    Cheers!

  21. When I was reading the blog post, the 225,000,000 users made me think of something....

I feel like there is a lot of good feedback / complaining and bug reporting here in the forums. So I say, why are they ignoring some of these stuff? Thus, I looked at the numbers:

There are 437,856 posts according to the 1st page in the forums. Assuming, each of these posts are by individual users (which they are not, but let's assume for this argument)

    437K/225Mil = 0.19%

So are they treating it 0.19% of the users are making suggestions and 99.81% is content?!?!?! Of course, there are the tickets and the twitter accounts that receives reporting too which I don't have any numbers of.

In short, I wonder if having 225 million users providing false confidence to some executives about the product. To me, if you used any of the Windows versions 6.8 thru 6.13, you would really think about the quality of what you are releasing. If my team was producing that kind of obvious mistakes (we don't deal with bugs in construction, they are mistakes...COSTLY mistakes I must add), I would really stop and reconsider a lot of things.

Nonetheless, maybe a little of the subject, but that's what made me think of. The new logo is nice, I get the marketing side of things, but what makes marketing great when the product matches the marketing quality and the efforts.
