Don't know which web clipper feature broke, because none is broken (at least to my attention).

    Clipping Gmails is broken (again).

There was a discussion about pdf clipping, which showed to be a correct behavior of the web clipper. The pdf was dynamically created from the website, so it showed, but couldn't be clipped. Printing the page to a pdf, and saving this into EN is a proven solution for the cases I have encountered. This requires no fix, because nothing is broken.

You should try not to speak so confidently when maybe you don't have all the facts. I have verified this bug on sites that do not use PHP. Perhaps it's again a Gmail-related issue as I tested and verified it there. Anyone who uses Gmail and Chrome perhaps can replicate my results:

    1. Open a PDF from an email
    2. Click the 3-dots menu in the top-right, then choose to open in a new window
    3. Click the elephant logo to the right of the pdf to clip the file (see screenshot below)
      image.thumb.png.9c19e9f5fa0ed4d10ef848c882d1ba3a.png
    4. Go to Evernote and see that the PDF shows as a preview (single page or multi-page depending on your settings) within the note, but the filename of the note is mangled and double-clicking on the PDF results in an error similar to below:
      image.thumb.png.1a68edde5e54e44f1065098491c87b0c.png
    5. Note that renaming the file within Evernote (including attempting to add a .PDF file extension) does not fix the problem.
    6. Saving the file to the file system and then renaming it allows it to be opened by a PDF viewer (e.g. Preview on macOS). However, re-uploading the renamed file to the same note does not solve the issue. The renamed file seems to inherit the original mangled filename and again refuses to open directly from Evernote.
    7. In order to save this renamed file to Evernote in a way that preserves the file name and extension I was forced to create a brand new note. Of course, this defeats the time-saving purpose of using the web clipper to save a PDF file in the first place.

NB: I have sent this information to support. I separately sent the Gmail web clipper issue to support almost three weeks ago, and no human has responded to that report as of yet.

    Good luck to you.

Just to correct a statement: The Web Clipper not long ago got a nice multiple selection tool that allows to clip only the sections from a site you need.

Beside this the Web Clipper doesn’t get much attention in the forum. It seems most users are happy with it as it is.

Not sure what that user's issue is with the web clipper, but my favorite web clipper feature broke about three weeks ago, and while I notified support they still haven't responded more than 17 days later... It's clearly not getting as much attention as it used to, which is fine when everything's working, but annoying when something breaks and it takes a long time to fix. :(

Which is the same number of key strokes as my suggestion of end then space.

I don't normally add to a search term in other programs. The building up of searches using the advanced search syntax in EN is one of its strengths. It's difficult to incorporate all three scenarios we have discussed without somebody having to hit some extra keys. Currently you are doing the extra and I'm not - I'm sure if it was the other way around I would feel the same!

The difference is there's a software design convention that Evernote violates, and it just so happens to benefit you. Congratulations, I guess, but that's not a great reason to keep doing it, is it? Also, they are probably violating the convention accidentally, because of the way the desktop app is developed (i.e. with Electron*). If they used native operating system APIs, the "highlight search term" feature would happen by default as it's a built-in function in Windows and Mac. Which is why it worked that way in Evernote legacy and why it works that way in just about every other application...

*Note: to be clear, there's no reason it can't work that way in Electron apps, I'm looking at two Electron apps right now which do it. It just so happens that the developers have to be thoughtful about implementing the feature as it doesn't happen by default, unlike with native apps.

You haven't actually covered the scenario, which I personally use most, of adding to the search. In your proposal you would probably have to type {end} and then {space}. Currently, to highlight the search term so that you can type in a new search, you need to type {shift}+{Home}. So I guess EN need to decide which use needs an extra keystroke or two.

If you want to add to the search then right arrow then space. Just as you would in probably every other application you have installed on your computer right now.

I have yet one complain (reported here on EN forum many times).

When you try to use keyboard shortcuts to search. Every time I press my shortcut, I expect the search box to be cleared. But not in new EN. This is the only program I know where I have to manually clear the search box before making a new search...

This is the most annoying me behavior of this application. It is completely different of anything I have seen ever.

Reported officially, I am trying to find ticket number for it.

The idea is you can repeat searching this way. I have often a situation where I want to find notes using the same search. In these cases it is useful.

Where it is helpful as well is when you switch between searching FOR a note, and the searching IN the note. The In-Note-Search field is already populated with the note search content. I don’t need to type anything again.

This one is excruciating for me, too. It's not that the old search term should be deleted, it's that the old search term should be highlighted. Want to repeat the search? Just hit enter. Want to delete the search and replace it with a new search term? Just start typing and your keystrokes replace the previously highlighted search term. This is how it works in Spotlight, Finder, Safari, Notes, Chrome, Firefox, Pages, Numbers, Word, Excel, and on and on and on. Just about every application respects this convention except Evernote v10. It's such a small change but irritatingly inconsistent with other applications and it would be so easy to fix.

well, web clipper showed the green elephant PDF import button, so it must have recognized the PDF and  I would expect it to import as PDF or not show the PDF import shortcut. Again this woudln't be an issue if I could edit the extension later-on as was possible before V10 (or even in eariler version of V10, I don't remember that)...

Same thing just happened to me. Used the web clipper to save a PDF, and it seemed to save fine and is viewable in the note, but can't be opened because it has a slew of nonsense characters appended to it beyond the "pdf" extension. Same on the web so it's not just a desktop client issue. The weird thing is the Evernote client can see the file just fine (it renders multi-page previews, etc.) but for some reason the file name is broken and the rename file function doesn't fix it.

About the extension: First I don’t encounter this, using EN web clipper. Second an app doesn’t need to provide solutions for any weirdness that may exist.

Go to the note, click the attachment, save as (where you can already modify the extension), save it. Then import the corrected file again.

The folder it opens for the import will be the same one you had saved to before, which makes the operation quite straightforward.

Tried this and thought it would be a useful trick, except the file re-imported with the exact same nonsense characters appended after the pdf extension! Very strange. I should report to support, but I'm getting a little tired of repeatedly reporting bugs and having very few of them actually resolved.

  7. It hasn't rolled out to me, yet, but I'm interested in it. Anyone who has it, how are you using it? I'm hoping it will allow me to text search PDF files more easily (particularly when multiple PDF files are in a single note).

As far as I'm aware no one has yet shown that data synced to an Evernote account has been 'lost' through no fault of the user.

Because it's the first time the topic has been raised here (as far as I can tell) and you quoted no background.  So do your files still exist but are shown as 'untitled attachment',  or are the actual files completely gone from your note?

This is not true, it has been raised many times over the past year and while you may not remember, I know you have participated in threads where this has both been mentioned (e.g. by yours truly) and has been acknowledged by Bending Spoons (e.g. the untitled attachment issue). It is a known issue, thought to be solved multiple times over the past year. And apparently it's back, at least for one user. A little empathy goes a long way.

I am familiar with that window 😞

Today I found several notes that used to contain PDFs that after the step to V10 now are definitely gone, both locally and on the web client. Will check note history on them to see whether a previous version has been saved.

    EDIT: note history is empty...

Unfortunately, I too have experienced both issues (on the v10 desktop app for macOS), though I have not experienced either for several months, knock on wood. I've written about them in more detail in the past on these forums, and I've corresponded with Evernote support and particularly with respect to the "untitled attachment" issue have even corresponded with the BS CEO about it.

All I can suggest is to follow the basic troubleshooting steps already mentioned in this thread and then if that fails capture logs and send them into support ASAP. They have supposedly fixed bugs related to this issue over the past year but apparently there are more bugs to fix, and the logs will help. Also, one time they were somehow able to retrieve an attachment from the server even though it no longer appeared in my note history. Best of luck.

So I did what I do when I wanted an offline download: Put the iPad on charger, turned autolockscreen off in iOS settings, made EN the active app and forced syncing through EN settings. I had it run through the night, don‘t exactly how long it took.

Don't you think it's ridiculous that this is necessary? They really should do a better job of educating the user in-app and utilizing background tasks to not require such workarounds.

...or working "fully remote" from Vietnam or Pakistan.

Individual developers working remotely in (just about) any part of the world is not really a concern to me. Presumably they will be held to the standards and expectations of the mothership, and that (and the mothership's ownership structure, owners, culture, and leadership) is the part I really care about, for reasons I outlined above.

And I have already done your default procedure.

According to a quick search, your phone only has 4GB of RAM. Depending on what apps you are switching to, it's possible that it needs to close Evernote to free up RAM. A newer phone, if that's something you're already considering, may alleviate this issue.

For data protection it is relevant where the servers and the data center are, not where the development team is.

From my perspective it's not that important where individual members of the development team are physically located. What's important to me is that a company's owners and leaders are incentivized to do the right thing in terms of how they treat my data beyond a simple economic interest in the company they are running. That means being incentivized to follow the law, to be truthful with how they are treating our data, and to face consequences if they fail to do so.

Public figures have incentives to uphold their reputations. If they are connected to a community of investors, that's another reason they have to not sully their reputations. Those investors also have reasons to investigate the people they are entrusting with their money, which provides some social proof of their trustworthiness. Combine that with living / working in countries with strong legal systems and with reciprocal legal agreements (e.g. to extradite criminals), they also have incentives to follow the law and face the possibility of harmed consumers seeking reparations through the civil court system. Of course none of this is perfect, but it gives me a measure of comfort.

A notes app that is (for example) developed by a couple of anonymous developers in Vietnam, just doesn't have the same reasons to trust them with my data.

When you say the issue hasn't returned, do you mean your gmail clipping is working again?  I've tried the items you mentioned and can't get it back.  It looks like I'm back to email forwarding for a while.

No, it means the general issues I was having with Gmail (such a reconnecting... message frequently appearing at the top) hasn't re-appeared. But that could also be related to clearing my cache and cookies so I'm not sure the extension had anything to do with it. I need to do more testing with the extension back on to see if it reoccurs.

Gmail clipping still doesn't work, unfortunately. I'm re-opening a support case I previously had going regarding the web clipper. Suggest anyone else who cares about that function to also report it, otherwise it may not get any attention.

  15. Darn. I sent feedback to Google and suggest anyone experiencing issues with Gmail does the same. Click the button labeled "?" in the top-right of the Gmail screen, then click "Send feedback to Google." Describe the issue in detail.

FWIW, in addition to clearing cache/cookies, I've tried disabling all extensions except for Web Clipper and it still occurs. I've also tried disabling all extensions including web clipper, and the issue hasn't occurred since (though I need to use Gmail for longer and test further to be sure). If that holds true, then it's possible that Evernote may need to update something on the web clipper to fix this.

  16. I've been experiencing weirdness with Gmail in general the last couple of days. And this morning the clipper is no longer offering "Gmail" as an option, even through the web clipper hasn't been updated since March 4th (so likely due to a change on the Gmail side, or perhaps in Chrome). There's a Chrome update downloading now and I will test further after it installs.

The first response was automatic and generic. The ticket said I should respond with more information.
    My answer was:
Detailed description: everything was explained in the ticket. And I am pretty sure (as others) that the problem is related to the new collapse/uncollapse bullet list feature.
Platforms on which you're experiencing the issue: Windows
Activity logs: you do not need. Just fix the bullet list feature, please.

If anyone wants to really make sure that an overtaxed support department truly understands the issue, here's my suggestion:

Create a dummy note with generic text and lots of bullets / sections, make sure there are sufficient collapsible sections to have truly awful performance. Share it publicly, then send the link to support. It will immediately be very clear to them.

I recently started to use the web clipper on gmails.  Never did before until I saw a posting by another user.  It worked surprisingly well.  I wonder if they plan on letting the gmail specific integration sunset and instead have users use this.  Just speculating.  It doesn't make sense to me to have the ability in two separate integrations.

The browser-based (desktop) web clipper works better for clipping Gmails, but the benefit of the Gmail integration is that it also works on mobile. So they both have their uses.

That's just ... running away from the problem. Wouldn't people just voice their grievances on X instead?

And it'd be worse because then Evernote's PR releases on X will be peppered with negative comments, hurting Evernote's image.

Speaking for myself, I don't recall any threads that Federico participated becoming toxic, but perhaps I missed it. Still, my speculation is the recent focus on Twitter is to attract a different kind of user and potentially get exposure to people who don't currently use EN or formerly used EN, neither of which are likely to be spending much time on these forums.

Found my alternative to Evernote. It's UpNote.

It does the job for what I need. and only $25 for life, one time cost. I have slowly started migrating and so far it's working great.

Any app which sells a lifetime license is living on borrowed time. Fine for certain things where I could get some value for a few years and not be overly fussed when the app inevitably shuts down or a new incompatible version is launched. But, for something as important as my notes and knowledge repository that's just too risky for me.

Because there are millions of users (still) and a simultaneous download - even over 24 hours - would crash the site.  Updates are released to groups of users over weeks.  Anyone can go to Evernote.com and individually download the latest version if they wish.

It's a very minor issue in the grand scheme of things but best practice is to allow the small number of users who know/care to individually opt in to the latest updates by checking for updates.

This also allows support reps dealing with customers to more easily ask them to update to solve a bug they may be experiencing. The remaining 99+% of users can slowly get the rollout over the course of a week as per usual.

I don't think it makes any sense to have a "check updates" button/function that doesn't work, but mostly just gives a false impression that your software is up-to-date.
