  1. Hyperbolic statements aside, there is simply no denying that certain tasks that were quick and effortless in legacy require many more clicks and annoyingly more time in v.10. Take, for example, changing a note creation date. Such an unpleasant experience now. Or simply changing a note's notebook. Not to mention the extra time required just for scrolling, because of all the extra padding. Those are just a few examples, but it's everywhere. There may be efficiencies in v.10 compared to legacy, but I haven't found them. I don't use Evernote for work/productivity. I use it as a digital file cabinet/remember everything repository. V.10 still functions for that purpose, and better than any alternatives. It's just a lot clunkier and less pleasant to use, for me at least.
  2. OMG, why are you chiming in here, with nothing at all useful to add???? Why? I have read all those threads about delaying import, in my effort to find a solution to my problem. All I can say is, while I don't claim that legacy was perfect or flawless, I never once had an issue with importing from my import folder, or from direct scanning. Those things just worked, efficiently and well, without fuss or workarounds. So whatever speed or delay Legacy used for importing from the import folder (and from scanning) was clearly an effective and correct one. And as best I can tell, import from the import folder works fine from v.10 too. So the issue of delay is simply not really relevant here (as it is in the case of scanning), except insofar as it clearly *does* take v.10 a little longer than it took Legacy to import from the import folder, and that's how I became aware of my issue. I didn't "mess up" my install of anything. I very purposely connected the same folder I'd had as my Legacy import folder as my v.10 import folder (the import folder field was empty when I installed v. 10). I did this because it did not occur to me, though it probably should have, that Legacy would continue to import after it was no longer connected to the internet. And if it had occurred to me, I would have assumed that the fact that Legacy was importing from that folder would have been IRRELEVANT to v.10 and would not have prevent v.10 from using that folder. BS has proclaimed so loudly that Legacy is dead and gone and defunct, which means v.10 should be totally blind to the existence of old versions that use the old system and database and should not care at all what they are doing, since there is no longer any possibility of conflict. It would be completely reasonable for me to assume that V.10 could use that folder as an import folder without regard to whether my locally operating Legacy version is also still using it - because it's true. But it wasn't true when Legacy was still operational, last week. Clearly whatever safeguards were in place then to prevent duplication have not been changed - and also clearly, Legacy imports from the folder more quickly than v.10, as a general rule. Which is why the files were not importing to my currently operating version of Evernote, v.10. The problem is now solved. The folder I am using is now not one from which Legacy imports, so v.10 can take all the time it needs (not long - but longer than legacy) to import the files, and it is doing so without issue. I am sure I will get used to the second or two extra time it takes, and just add it to the extra seconds and multiple extra steps it now takes me to do many things in Evernote - starting with the seconds it takes to scroll just to see my notes. It's frustrating, since this isn't just a matter of adapting to something different, which always takes time, but of unavoidable additional time from actual inefficiencies that have been introduced, but that's the way it is, and as long as the basic Evernote functionality (that I need) remains, I am sticking with it.
  3. Actually I think I did figure it out! I still have Legacy installed, firewalled from the internet. It obviously doesn't sync, but I'm keeping it as a backup in case I need to check an older note at some point in the future that hasn't yet been converted to v.10 - and also as reassurance (and also to torture myself, since it reminds me every time I see it how much I preferred that UI!). I was using the same "Add to Evernote" folder for v.10 that I had been for Legacy, though I'd cleared it out. But it turns out that though Legacy is firewalled, it is still operating as a local app, so when I added a file to the folder, it was importing to Legacy! Legacy is much speedier with importing than v.10, so it beat out v.10 in the import 90% of the time, and once that happened, the note was considered imported by Evernote Prime - even though it actually wasn't now that Legacy is no longer connected to servers. Anyway, once I set up a new Add to Evernote folder in a different location, the import to v.10 resumed working correctly. I know there are others who have retained Legacy locally as I have, so this could possibly be helpful if anyone encounters the same issue!
  4. I'm attempting to gracefully accept using v.10 on windows, with the death of legacy. It isn't easy. My most recent issue is that pdf files I'm saving into my import folder are not importing. These are files that I am printing to pdf from a web page, and they are correctly saving and appearing in the Add to Evernote folder, which I have correctly set up in Evernote settings, but they are not appearing in my Evernote notes. Does anyone have suggestions or ideas? I've searched but haven't found anything about this issue. If I transfer the files out of Add to Evernote to another directory and then move them back in, sometimes one or two of them will import to Evernote, but sometimes not - it's random.
  5. So when you installed legacy on the Win 7 computer, that computer was connected to the Internet and you logged in? If not, how did you get Legacy to open? Even unconnected to the internet, it requires you to be logged in in order to open so you can see your local database notes.
  6. I had a strange issue the other day where a pdf attachment to one note appeared in another note - one that also had a pdf attachment, so the second note then had two pdf documents. I was working in Legacy, a few days before cutoff. The pdf attachment remained in the original note, but it was also inserted into a note in which it did not belong. I hope it was just a sync-between-versions glitch, since I was working with both notes at the time.
  7. Okay, you keep telling me this, and *I understand* so you don't have to repeat it. But once again, TdeV said: "The upgrade wanted to sync with the mother ship, but I did not provide a password to Evernote. It re-asked half dozen times." I would just like to know what he meant by it.
  8. Yes, I know, I've heard this ad nauseum. But tdeV said he installed/upgraded legacy on a machine that was not connected to the internet. I was asking how, on the chance that *maybe* there's something I, and you, don't know.
  9. How did you get the legacy version/upgrade to run on the disconnected computer without being able to connect to the servers to authenticate - in other words, how did you log in to legacy after upgrading, on the disconnected computer? I am curious whether there is a way to install and run legacy locally, with the previously exported database, on a completely disconnected computer, since there's no way to authenticate/log in.
  10. Thank you. Fwiw, I submitted my views on this point. There's a modern tendency toward increased padding in all programs and apps, but for a productivity app like Evernote, the vast amount of wasted space is inexcusable.
  11. You're not an oddball. It may sound trite, but one of the reasons I resisted switching for so long was the utter waste of space in v.10's UI. I don't use the same layout as you, but it's the same issue. I prefer the larger note list in the left column with more of the note showing. On my laptop running v.6 I could see 10 notes in the left column. Running v.10 I cannot see more than 5, no matter how wide I make the column or how small I make the font. It is utterly maddening. There is so much wasted white space above and below each note, serving no purpose, and meanwhile I have to scroll twice as much. Same on iPad. I just do not get it. At least give me the option to have a more efficient compressed layout, especially on my devices with smaller screens - like iPad mini! I've accepted that it's v.10 or nothing if I want to keep using Evernote, and I'm mostly okay with it, but every time I see that wasted space and remember how much better v.6 was in this regard, and how *stupid* this layout is for no reason, my blood boils.
  12. Predictable. In other news, my Android legacy version (which I kept for experimental purposes) logged me off and would not reauthenticate this morning. I had to install v.10, which went fine. I was already running v.10 on windows and iPad. My firewalled legacy versions running on desktop and laptop are working fine. I have not tried to see what would happen if I remove the firewall - though I did not have the firewalls in place this morning because I forgot. I did not try to sync before enabling the rules, and I still can use Legacy as before, but with no syncing of course. This is just for backup and reassurance purposes. It does sound from the few comments so far like keeping legacy un-firewalled is not a problem though - sync just fails.
  13. Ran what upgrade? Not to v 10,right, because you still are running legacy on the windows 7 computer or am I missing something? You didn't provide a password, so does that mean you are not logged in to Evernote legacy? I feel like your solution sounds like it could be great but I'm slightly confused!
  14. Oh I see, I was just misreading your sentence about precautions! But I had completely missed that sentence in the post I quoted. I only have about 7 notebooks so I guess I wasn't as focused on it, but still I will use Ctrl-shift-e when I export from legacy for the last time before the 23rd. One thing though - if I understand correctly, I don't think you'll be able to move legacy to your desktop after March 23rd. With no server you won't be able to log in after March 23rd, as @PinkElephant explains - you have to be logged in to legacy when the old servers stop running. So you won't be able to do any new installations of legacy after March 23rd. If you don't already have it installed on your old desktop and logged in on that date, your worst case scenario plan won't work. Unless I'm misunderstanding what you mean.
  15. Was it missing from Legacy too? Because that would be very strange! You had it on Dropbox, but you could always pull the image easily from legacy if necessary (which is a reason to keep it around I think). You took many more precautions than I did! I had everything backed up but nothing more than that. And I have to admit that I do not know what you mean when you say that using ctrl-shift-e is a precaution? Anyway I'm glad it worked out for you! I too am sticking with Evernote. There are no other options that have anything like evernote's functionality for the way I use it, though I rely on it so heavily that the lack of good alternatives worries me. Any change this large to something so important is bound to cause concern, but if it continues to do what I need it to do, I will adapt.
  16. So I don't understand what would happen if it tries to seek a server that no longer responds. Is the fear that it will sync the notes to nothing so you end up with nothing? But if the server isn't there or isn't responding, it won't be able to sync, so isn't it more likely you'd just get a message that sync failed, as you would currently if the server was down? Why is it so critical to keep legacy walled off from the internet?
  17. Oh no, I don’t want to give the wrong impression! I certainly don’t feel like I can move forward without fear - I am full of trepidation about this transition and hate the fact that it is happening. The only thing I can say for sure is that right at this moment I am running Legacy and v.10 simultaneously. But once Legacy is no longer supported, as I understand it, unless I have Legacy firewalled from the internet, I’ll lose my legacy-format local EN database (I think that’s what will happen?). What I don’t understand is where this idea that installing v.10 will uninstall legacy and/or change your database comes from. I mean, I didn’t do anything magical. I found the instructions for what I did right here in the forums, from @KoZz, here: https://discussion.evernote.com/forums/topic/148007-this-version-of-the-app-is-outdated-you-need-to-install-the-latest-version-to-keep-using-evernote-update-now/?do=findComment&comment=701103 In brief, these were the steps (preceded by backing up everything first to be safe if you want): 1) make a copy of the entire EN legacy folder (Program Files(x86)\Evernote) so it’s called Evernote -copy; the exe for Legacy is now in Evernote-copy folder; 2) go into the options of legacy and move the location of the database; 3) install v.10 (allowing Cleanup of old version), which will be installed in Program Files(x86)\ Evernote folder. After this the exe in the Evernote-copy folder will run legacy (supposedly it should have a gray icon, but mine does not, which makes me a little worried!), and the exe in the new Evernote folder runs v.10. No need to reinstall anything. Maybe there is something incorrect about this procedure, but it seemed to work for me. I did this just 3 days ago, and I’m running the two side by side now. As I understand, and as @PinkElephant seems to confirm, legacy and v.10 use different data structures on EN’s servers, and installing v.10 causes conversion of your notes to the new data structure (I’d already been running v.10 on my iPad, so I *think* this had already happened?) - but it doesn’t delete the legacy data structure version of your notes on EN’s servers. That’s what’s going to happen on the 23rd. This is confirmed by the fact that legacy still runs for me (or when reinstalled). And it didn’t delete my local copy of the legacy db - I had moved that to a new location. And it didn’t delete legacy itself, as I’d copied/hidden the exe folder. So I’m not sure what the installation is supposed to delete. Maybe it deletes your legacy installation if you don’t copy the Evernote folder first? Anyway, my assumption is that after March 23rd Legacy will only be useful as a backup/double check of sorts for the notes that existed as of that date, and then only to the extent it remains firewalled. Still, to me that is valuable reassurance even if it is redundant, considering how important Evernote is to my daily life.
  18. Thank you so much for this! I knew about how to get folders indexed but not that I could search for tags as you describe. I do know it's not a replacement for legacy, but it's reassuring to have it as a backup, especially since I haven't figured out or put into place a backup solution for v.10 yet. I will probably keep legacy and attempt to firewall it, for a while at least, just in case I come across a situation where I can't find a note in v.10 that I think should be there, or a note is corrupted, that sort of thing. At some point it won't be useful or I won't feel like I need it anymore. But for now it makes me feel better!
  19. Lol. Yeah, thanks for this, I'll sort through and clean up 12,000 notes in 2 weeks, in my spare time!😆🤣 I have no nested folders or stacks or nested anything. I only have about 6 folders and most of my notes are in one of those. I don't use spaces or characters or anything except regular letters in my tags. My structure is extremely simple. I mostly use descriptive note titles in a pretty standard format to find notes. I'm sticking with Evernote. I don't intend to *use* my html backups. But having them as security in case they are necessary is reassuring.
  20. The benefit of it is that if you have many thousands of notes, there's no way to check and make sure all of them are there, intact, uncorrupted, etc. There have been many accounts of people losing notes or of notes not opening, etc etc, during the conversion. Having a full, accessible, easily navigable backup in the form of legacy Evernote, where you can easily search for your notes and check them against converted versions, double check search results, etc, is reassuring, especially during the transition, especially for people with thousands of notes who have relied on Evernote for many years and are very unhappy with this change. It has nothing to do with not using v.10. Those of us who are sticking with Evernote are going to use v.10, like it or not. I'm not going to sit around looking at Legacy every day. But it makes me feel better to know my almost two decades worth of notes are safe and preserved and accessible through the GUI I am familiar with, if necessary. You may not want or need this. That's your choice. But others clearly do find the effort invested to be worth it, and simply saying that it isn't is not helpful.
  21. Was this aimed at me? If so I'm not sure what you mean. I just asked the question, why, if someone wanted to maintain legacy firewalled off, they would have to reinstall it after installing v.10, since I did not have to reinstall it after installing v.10. I wondered if I was missing something. I had already started using the new version on iPad at least quite a while ago, so I'm assuming they my notes are all converted, and now I have it on my laptop too. Of course I haven't been able to open every note to check that they're all there and uncorrupted, so I will export everything from legacy to html, just in case, and possibly try firewalling legacy, though I am not confident about this.
  22. Is there a way to search specifically for tags? If you have many thousands of notes in a folder, and tag called something common like, I don't know, "car," searching for "car" could pull up a lot of notes that have the word car in them but aren't tagged "car." Though actually, now that I think about it, I don't really even know how Windows indexing works - what does it index and what can you search? File/folder name? Contents? Can you use search syntax?
  23. I don't understand what I've done then. Because until 2 days ago I was running only 6.25.1.9091 on my laptop. Following instructions I found here I copied my Evernote folder within the Evernote directory and also moved the location of the database. Then I installed the newest version 10. It did not uninstall 9091. I did not have to reinstall it. I can run them both.
  24. Sorry if this is a dumb question - is this a single or multipage html export? I've never done html export before and I'm not entirely certain I understand the difference. I think single page will give me one page for all 6000 notes in one notebook, if I understand correctly? But maybe I don't!
