  1. I edited this post to remove unhelpful editorializing I posted earlier this morning, but left the factual content.e

So, in Evernote I have a notebook named  "Reference/Not Urgent" and have set the notebook to be available offline.

Started the app at 8:49am.  No download progress bar.

As of 9:14am, no progress bar.

As of 9:18am, finally a download progress bar.

Don’t try to download all at once. Do it one by one, wait until one has finished before starting the next.

You may try 2 or 3 at a time - when I tried, everything above 3 at a time led to a crawl.

Turn the others off. The slider has its own life: After switching off and selecting to keep/dump the data, it autoswitches on again. Now do nothing, just wait. After several seconds (up to 30 sec on a notebook with 1.000 notes) it switches OFF again.

@PinkElephant, those are good points,  but to my way of thinking, these types of  discussions are best had - and addressed -  during beta testing, not accompanying a production rollout that is supposed to (presumably) make the application more user-friendly.

  3. I keep several notebooks offline, as I often need access to content, but do not always have access to wifi or hotspot connectivity, and have done this for several years, with no problems.

As the Evernote for iOS app matured, so did my reliance on it, and happiness with it.  Until ver 10.x.

We all know what a disaster ver 10 has been, but only tonight did it occur to me to document what I was seeing, to put some level of objectivity to what I have been experiencing.

My biggest offline notebook contains between 10k and 11k notes, but that generally was not a bottleneck.

But the ver 10.x white elephant in the room has a different, and much lower standard, of functionality.  I took a screenshot at 11:17pm, with the green download progress bar not visible for the "Reference/Not Urgent" notebook.  As soon as the green download progress bar appeared (11:24pm), I took another screenshot.  7 minutes.

Never - ever - did any of the older versions perform at this godawful, abysmal speed.

The best part?  I didn't think to document this until 10 minutes after I had  launched the app and waited for the green bar to show up.

17 minutes!  Please Evernote, @Shane D., can you explain how this is considered acceptable?

  4. Almost forgot:

In previous versions of EN for iOS, there was a switch under settings to "Sync only on Wi-Fi"

WHY is this not yet in ver 10.x?  Wondered why is was getting "you're nearing your data limit" texts from Verizon.  I have to go into Settings / Evernote / Turn cellular data off.  So it's all or nothing?

As far as functionality goes, I'm really starting to think this version should have never made it past QA, or even Beta...

IF YOU HAVEN'T UPDATED ALREADY, DON'T DO IT. The new version in Windows 10, iOS, and web browsers is terrible. Worst of all for me, you can no longer search for text in an encrypted note after revealing the encrypted contents. Search overall is also really laggy. And the latest bug I noticed--when using the web interface in Mozilla Firefox as an attempted workaround--is that the web browser search box isn't formatting properly; as you type your query in the search field, the searched-for text moves left, out of view, so it looks like you didn't type the first letter (although if you switch to find and replace, the formatting fixes itself).

I cannot thank you enough:  I downloaded ver 10 for Windows last week, thinking it would be an improvement.  But it's like regressing to ver 2, or 3, of the Windows client.  No, it's actually worse than that.

If developers or software managers would at least reach out to users via this forum, they would be able to learn what we really want, need, and don't want.  In that sense, we are a great resource that the company chooses to ignore.

    Sigh.....

Today I've upgraded by accident 🙄 to V10.1 on my iPhone Xs.

I've disabled any offline download due to known issues (stalled downloads).

Starting the App takes about 2 or 3 secs (after force quit).

Surprisingly the App runs without any performance problems so far:

    • switching between Notebooks: quick and smooth
    • scrolling through lists (e. g. 'all notes' view with 6 k notes) and note content: very fast and smooth
    • switching between notes and reminders view: quick and smooth
    • searching by text: very fast
    • searching by a saved search: almost instant results
    • searching by selecting suggested tags: fast refresh of new suggested tags
    • adding tags while writing a note (tag selector): most of the time quick, sometimes a bit lagy (maybe after adding more and more tags - I always have to search for a tag due to long list)

    Device is not getting warm.

Maybe that "do not offline download" is a performance workaround? (because there are some issues and device is doing strange things while continously re-trying stalled downloads - don't know, just my 5 cent thoughts).

To summerize after 2 hours of using it: besides missing features and known issues it "feels" pretty good (speedy), UI looks great - a bit surprised to be honest.

I appreciate your summary of using the app.  I too upgraded by accident, and was very unhappy with the app's appearance generally, and still am.

    My experience thus far:

    • Making certain notebooks available offline has been amazingly slow, inconsistent, unreliable, and the download speed... it is really horrendous.
    • I suppose it's fair to say I got spoiled by earlier versions of the app being more informative with regard to download progress - up until (i think) 5 years ago, the iOS app would even show the size of each notebook - I found it quite useful.
    • One of the deficits for me, is the lack of an activity indicator showing download activity happening.  Previous versions had the animated "spinning wheel" next to the wifi symbol (upper left hand corner on my phone).
    • But just using the app to scroll through notes/notebooks is really quite fast - I was surprised.
    • Initially, searching by tag in the first version of 10 released was horrendous - often over 10 seconds to get search results using only 1 tag.
    • The UI design is good, generally.

    • Thanks 1
  7. After searching this forum, it seems I am encountering an issue that is the opposite of what others have reported.

On opening a note, I can edit the content, even though I have not tapped the "Edit" button.  And even though under Settings>Notes, Edit Protection is selected.

This seems like a potential issue, but if anyone has encountered this, is there a fix?

    Thanks

    We are all unhappy.

What exactly is your issue with the offline notebooks on the iOS client ?

    Good Morning, @PinkElephant.

I have a notebook that contains approximately 10,400 notes, and when I choose to make it available offline, the process never, ever completes.  In the most recent iteration, the 'make available offline' process had just stopped sometime overnight.  This has happened every night since last Friday.  In several instances, on starting the app, this notebook shows as being not at all offline, even though the 'make available offline' option is greyed out.  And no matter how long the app remains open (30 minutes at a time, so far), the download option never resumes.

I hope I cleared that up a little?

  9. So I have a notebook containing approximately 10k notes.  This morning marks the 6th time I have seen Evernote v10.1 (1107121) go through this irritating and useless pattern of behavior.

This app seems to prove the axiom of "New and Improved means just 'new'."

This experience feels like going from version 1.5 to version 0.74...

I was trying to like the new UI, I really was.  But then this?  I frequently use my Evernote content offline, and as such, the app - and service - are becoming almost worthless.

Is there any clarity as to when Evernote might try to fix this?  The old version had it's quirks, but was dependable and functioned properly.   What the hell has happened to Evernote?

You might be interesting in using the Legacy version

I don't find the v10 better than the legacy product (yet)
I see this as release .0 of a new product; a framework for the implementation of features

Thank you for replying, only wish I'd replied to you sooner.

  11. Hello,

I have been away from the forums for several months, and this last week was surprised by the version 10 download - I built a new PC, and absentmindedly downloaded ver 10.x, thinking it might be a huge step forward.

Am I alone in thinking this application is a pile of kludge?  I removed ver 10, and installed ver 6.25.1.9091 - because the newer version did not seem to store a copy of my database locally, there appear to be features in 6.25 that are absent in 10 - can someone say how in any sense the newer version is better than the older one?

Thanks - feeling kind of irritated at the moment - ugh

Thanks for the update. Try these steps to help fix this.

    1. Open Evernote for Windows
    2. Once open click on **Tools** in the menu bar of the application.
    3. From there hold down the CTRL key and hover over to **Help** and you will see the Help menu has been expanded.
    4. Choose **Fix All Notes** and then go back and choose **Optimize Database**.
    5. Restart your computer and then go back into Evernote

Let us know if that helps.

@Austin G, this was one hell of a lengthy process - optimizing the database - I had no idea it would be over an hour of "optimizing" but yet, the application has not stumbled once since...  Thank you for the information.

Hi. If you haven't already please try reinstalling Evernote. If the issue continues after reinstalling, can you tell what action(s) trigger the freeze. E.G. search, new note, adding a tag etc.

Hey @Austin G, thanks for the advice and questions.  I had removed and reinstalled Evernote - and regret not mentioning that in my original post.  The issue continued - and most often, what triggers the freeze is creating a new note to begin typing in it - and try (to type) but the application freezes, and I have to wait several seconds at least before I can begin using the application again.  The PC runs Windows 7, and has 8GB of RAM.

Just about every time I paste a screenshot into a note, I'm then sent up to the top of my note.

Very annoying when I'm in a long note as I then need to scroll down to where I was.

I assume this is some kind of bug?

I can confirm this happens - just created 30 - 40 lines of gibberish in a new note, pasted a photo at the end of the text - the bottom of the note - and was immediately taken back to the beginning of the note - at the top.

I created support ticket #1601816, and will advise of progress (or lack thereof).
