Level 5 jbenson2 2,149 Posted May 31, 2014 Level 5 Share Posted May 31, 2014 My computer is rapidly creating new files. Evernote is stumped. They are located in my directory:Users / Name / AppData / Local /EvernoteNW / Cache Couple examples:9fba95c2df9385ba_02aa73efe64b33afb_0 Each file is 1 KB in size There are more of them every day.1,477 files on 5/20 when Support was contacted1,622 files on 5/231,905 files on 5/271,917 files on 5/27 after a full restoration2,143 files on 5/31Latest communication from Support: "We want to let you know that we are looking into this issue, we will contact you back as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding." Version 5.4.0.3698 (271698) PublicDoes anyone have an idea what is creating these files in the EvernoteNW directory? Link to comment
Level 5* JMichaelTX 4,118 Posted May 31, 2014 Level 5* Share Posted May 31, 2014 Very strange, JB, very strange. Looks like to me that it is some type of caching operation that has gone awry. I'm running EN Mac 5.5.1, and a search of my entire hard drive for "EvernoteNW" (not case sensitive) found NOTHING. Please keep us posted. Link to comment

Yup, my feelings exactly.I had hoped Evernote would have just said to delete the bloody files. The standard Evernote directory is still there. The EvernoteNW directory is something relatively new - I've heard comments that it is related to the built-in annotation/drawing upgrade. edit: here is a comment from an Evernote employee when I brought up the EvernoteNW question in March.https://discussion.evernote.com/topic/54941-any-idea-what-evernotenwexe-does/#entry265749 I sent a message to Evernote Support to talk to Johnathan Hebert Link to comment

My oldest 1 KB file is dated April 7, 2014.It appears that it is creating up to 35 of these files per day.I never use the Evernote Web.I have only used the Presentation mode once to check it out.Annotation, maybe a dozen times in the past couple months. Johnathan Hebert 81
Hi jbenson2, Thanks for pointing this out -- it is definitely a result of the caching mechanism in a dependency of the annotation and presentation mode features. We will look into it and should be able to clean it up. Link to comment
Level 5* gazumped 12,068 Posted June 1, 2014 Level 5* Share Posted June 1, 2014 Hmmn. Hadn't noticed these until you pointed them out JB, but I got 'em too. Hopefully Johnathan can let us know how and when to remove them... Link to comment

Hopefully Johnathan can let us know how and when to remove them... The reason this caught my attention was I ran a program designed to clean up temp and cache files, but it had no impact on the EvernoteNW files. I am now up to 2,169 files. Link to comment
Johnathan Hebert 81
You can delete those files that end with "_0" if you want -- it will not cause a problem. We will try to prevent caching too much in future releases Link to comment

We will try to prevent caching too much in future releases Fortunately, all 2,100+ files end with "_0", so it will be easy to mass delete them. When I do my regular Evernote backup, I will manually clean the EvernoteNW / cache folder Link to comment
Level 5 jbenson2 2,149 Posted June 5, 2014 Author Level 5 Share Posted June 5, 2014 I got a nice pat on the back from Evernote Support today. I spoke with Jonathan. He gave me the back story on this.He was impressed that you had found the Cache location and noticed that there were a lot of files being stored there. He said that they have found the root cause and optimized the code to fix the issue.I'm impressed as well. Thanks for helping to make Evernote a better product. That said, it is not scheduled to be part of the General Release build for another couple releases. Sorry for the inconvenience. Thanks again John for being an enthusiastic Evernote user and an active Evernote Forum contributor. Link to comment
Level 5* JMichaelTX 4,118 Posted June 5, 2014 Level 5* Share Posted June 5, 2014 Well done, JB. We don't seem to have this issue in EN Mac, but I hope they pass the issue/solution along to the EN Mac team just to make sure. Link to comment
Level 5 jbenson2 2,149 Posted July 1, 2014 Author Level 5 Share Posted July 1, 2014 No resolution yet. Upgraded to Evernote Windows 5.4.1.4027 (272027) Beta 1Even though I delete them every day, I still see dozens of the 1 KB files in EvernoteNW/Cache every day. I'll continue to wait for the general release Johnathan Hebert / Support mentioned. But... I did some more research and came across a lot of duplicate files in c:\users\John\Desktop\Evernote_files 225 duplicate files - I don't even use a RSS Feed, but I have 19 duplicate rss-get-feed.gif files. Here are just a few of duplicates:http://www.evernote.com/shard/s2/sh/a8931362-1d17-4c27-8e70-12b26a937e36/ce07ecc0168e4857aa5ac81288ef082c Odd that I have so many duplicate files, especially after doing a complete uninstall / wipe / reinstall / download sync just a few weeks ago. Johnathan Hebert 81
Hi jbenson2, It may be possible that there are a few dozen files in the cache folder at any given time. However, does the number of cache files continue to grow everyday like before, or does the number of cache files remain somewhat constant over time? Link to comment

However, does the number of cache files continue to grow everyday like before, or does the number of cache files remain somewhat constant over time? The growth of new files has slowed down. But unless I manually delete them, they continue to increase. The last date I erased the files was two weeks ago on July 1.I currently have 225 files. That averages out to 16 new files each day. c:\users\john\appdata\local\EvernoteNW\cacheI am using 5.4.1.4027 (272027) Prerelease Link to comment
