Can't delete notes or pictures!

I have some old notes in Evernote ,Windows and Android, that I'd like to delete, but I can't find how to do it. Naturally I searched for advice. Trouble is, the advice does not work.

To delete a note in Windows, Evernote Help says;

WINDOWS

  • The new Evernote for Windows
    1. Right-click the note you'd like to delete.
    2. Select Move to Trash from the options list.
Older version of Evernote for Windows
    1. Right-click the note you'd like to delete.
    2. Select Delete Note from the options list.

I've done done the right click thing multiple times, but DELETE is never shown as an option, so that isn't an option

    Similarly, for Android (my cell phone and tablet), I'm told;

The new Evernote for Android Open the note you'd like to delete. Tap the More actions button (three dots), then select Delete note. Older version of Evernote for Android Open the note you'd like to delete. Tap the options button (three dots), then select Delete note.

Tapping the three dots does NOT yield DELETE as an option.

    What am I missing?

In a couple of notes, I'd like to delete one photo, but I similarly can't find out how to do that.  Any help would be appreciated.

Hi.  Are (or were) these notes shared to your by someone else?  In Windows,  what happens if you select a note and just hit 'delete' on the keyboard?

Posted

These are my own notes. I don't do any note sharing.

Selecting a note brings it up , but hitting DELETE does nothing unless the cursor happens to be on a line of text in which case, it deletes the next character after the cursor

Hmmn.  If these notes are in a specific notebook,  could you move all the other notes in that notebook to a temporary home and delete the notebook?  If that works you could recreate the notebook and move the rest of the files back...

If you select one of these notes and view the details,  is it showing an assignment to the correct notebook?

Try emptying the trash notebook on this account / signing out of the app / restarting the device and log back in.

If this does not work: It may be the notes were corrupted already a while ago - you write they are pretty old.

You could try to get at them on the web client.

Or try this on Windows, and after it repeat the attempt to delete one of them:

  1. Go to File > Sign Out [name] from the menu bar.
  2. Select the "Remove my Evernote data from this device" option, then click Sign out.
  3. Restart your computer.
  4. Sign back in to Evernote

Some of the notes are old, some are very new. I'd just like to clean house.

No luck on the web client either.

I find this to be an unusable app after the "updates". There is no deleting anything. The screens have become more complicated and user unfriendly on cellphone, and I do not have time to sit in front of a desktop every time I want to make a note. I am searching for another SIMPLER app, with a simpler format, and not so expensive. Just making something more complicated does not necessarily make it better. I wish companies had learned way back in the 50s that consumers actually realize the words "New!" and "Improved!" (and now "Upgraded!") just mean more hastle and more expense.

Hi.  If you'd like help with some issues,  please quote your device and OS/ Evernote app version numbers,  and explain exactly why you consider the app 'unusable'.  Millions of users seem to be very happy with the current setup.  If you simply posted to say 'goodbye',  then thanks and good luck.

All of this is true, except for the part about "no deleting anything," which is the topic of this thread. Evernote does more than it used to do, and therefore it is less simple. So you are absolutely right to look for something simpler and less expensive, if all you need is basic, individual text notes.

OTOH, where is it that you're unable to delete something? The original thread from over 3 years ago seems to me to involve some misunderstanding of how to delete a note. But since the thread was abandoned, it's pretty much impossible to know if you're having the same problem, whatever it was.

I too am unable to delete notes. I am on an Ipad M1 chip , latest version of Evernote , i am a subscriber.

I used to be able to click the three dots top right corner where there used be the delete option but now there is no delete.. I now have many blank notes in my notebooks.

The blank notes did have text , so i tried to 3 dot --> delete but no option , so i tried to delete all info so in effect a blank note & now i do not even get the 3 dots..

Frustrating..

Hi.  Did you delete the text in your blank notes?  If not,  it sounds like you have more issues than just deleting them.  In my (Android) 3 dots menu,  I scroll to the bottom and use 'move to trash' to delete notes - that's been the standard format for some years.

The only available local tech 'fix' is  to uninstall / power the device off and back on / reinstall - you could try another device to verify whether or not this is an issue on your iPad,  or contact Support - https://help.evernote.com/hc/en-us/articles/29101069844371-How-to-contact-Evernote-Support

(Always read the autoresponses *carefully* and reply, otherwise your ticket may just be be closed)

@gazumped , thankyou for your response , i have closed down all applications , powered down my ipad , waited 5 mins , powered it on , powered up Evernote , let it do its thing which takes 3 mins ( since it is all active sync in the cloud nowadays - horrible ) , i can see my blank note , opened it , i click the 3 dots & still no delete option ..

For the record i had text in the notes which allows the 3 dots to appear , the moment i remove all characters it is treated as a new blank text & does not give me the 3 dots options..

It is the old fail safe method of , close the application , force stop , clear cache , clear data then uninstall , power off completely so all running threads in memory are killed off then re-install from scratch , log in , wait 3 hours for the cloud to sync & even then i do not get all my notes back until the next day which is what i had to do before..

Crazy...

ScreenShot attached

Thankyou for your help but i will try to figure it out myself & hopefully i might find the reason & let you know , failing that i do not like the idea of having to un-install & re-install everytime an update happens :(

@Evernote team - you used to have a fantastic app & it just worked every-time but now i get more problems with it than i do using it , if it ain't broke then please do not try to break it ...

Kind Regards

Jimbo :)

Did you yet try to close the app, then do a FORCED restart of the iPad ?

The regular restart will not wipe the entire memory.

For me the "move to the bin" option is available (EN iOS 10.128.4), no matter if a not is empty or has content.

Hi @PinkElephant , thankyou for your time to reply , i did do a forced restart of my ipad 5th Gen on IpadOS 18.4, holding the volume button & the side button until the power device just died..I do remember helping out a while back about an update that happened early on about Evernote just getting caught in a loop when firing up or not being able to load properly & i figured that one out & posted the work around... This one is a bit more than that it seems.. For my sins i love Evernote & Skitch & pay my subscription just because it works how i like it to work but recently it is going against the grain ( i get it , syncing with the cloud & not local is a brave step but the lag man ).

Anyhoo to answer your question , yes i did force a restart , sorry i did not make that part clear as i was being facetious, sorry ..

Ipad Pro 12.9 5th Gen

IpadOS 18.4

Evernote Ver 10.128.4

Also i have access to an android phone & the Evernote latest version DOES have the Move to trash option via the 3 button menu ... Me trying another O/S before embarking on the long haul ..

I have note tried an actual web browser on a computer ( yes non mobile device ) to see but i think it too will give me the Move to Trash option as does Android ( guess work or it would seem Evernote is favouring Android & not all things being equal )..

Also for my sins , i am not going to uninstall and re-install an app most times an update has happened, so i will persevere to try to figure it out.

Maybe the Dev team use a system where updates via repo pull/push work as it is a controlled environment & the DevTest Team are actually not in the real world test arena..

Just my initial thoughts, that aside , on / in any OS there should always be a hard button to delete within that document ..

Kindest Regards

Jimbo :)

Just to mention it: Skitch is deprecated already and will likely be removed. Nothing to shed a tear in my opinion, it is / was a piece of outdated, ugly software with a horrific pixel-based engine.

On the Mac I have replaced it since long by Shottr. On the iOS devices I usually apply the native annotation tools.

@PinkElephant - R.I.P Skitch - i found that skitch helped provide the best 'How To' manuals - To be honest most mobile devices will allow you to edit pics just like skitch ..

An update on the Delete button within the 3 dot menu - it is visible on all other devices except iPad Pro for some reason - i have no option now except to un-install the app then clear as much evidence as possible then force shut then power on & see if it appears after a complete re-install..

My 3dot menu on iOS 18.3.1, EN 10.129 - everything ok except that the Print function is not working.
