Lack of notebook isolation

Something that has always bothered me about EverNote is that there is a lack of notebook isolation. That is, there is no concept of "opening" a notebok. You can click on a notebook in the left panel, but as soon as you then do a search or if you click on a tag, it returns a collection of stuff from all different notebooks. I would like to "open" a particular notebook and then have all my searches and filtering etc be local to that notebook.

It has been my experience that EN actually works the way that you want, in the "legacy" 6.25.1 version that is.  Provided you DON'T select the tag from the left panel.  Open the notebook via the left panel or the notebook dropdown in the search area.  Then select tags from the filter by tag drop down or clicking on the caret next to a tag in the note header and the search will be for the tag(s) selected in the context of that notebook.  Unless I am missing something.

Hidden shortcut of sorts, press the CTRL key while clicking to the right of the tags in the note header and you will get all notes with the same tags in whatever context you are in.

Or if you are searching in a notebook rather than filtering you can click "add filter" which appears under the search bar.

Yes your description of 6.25 behavior is correct. 

In version 10, adding a filter does respect the notebook context (add Mike P pointed out), but neither search nor holding the ctrl key while clicking a  tag, respect the notebook context.

You could go back to 6.25.1 found here until EN gets it sorted, if it is important to you.  That was the point I was trying to make, though not clearly.  Personally I am sticking with 6.25.1 as long as I can or until the missing "stuff" important to me gets fixed.  No upside in sticking myself with sharp objects.

I think what @DTLowand myself between us have demonstrated is that you can use either filter or search and respect the notebook context. To demonstrate the point imagine I want to find all notes tagged with $current in the notebook @inbox I will get this using filter:

 

or this using search:

It's perfectly doable in both ways but probably does require extra clicks compared with 6.25
