Clip Screenshot with Multiple Monitor setup

Recommended Posts

I have a new laptop (dell xps 13, windows 10) running evernote 6.21.2.8716 (the latest version)  with two external monitors (one hdmi, the other serial).

I have a problem with "clip screenshot" when connected to my external monitors. This used to work on my old laptop (same basic setup of two external monitors).

However, with my recent new laptop, when activating clip screenshot, I no longer get the cross hairs to see what I'm selecting (for example a region). And the monitor displays jump and distorts. The interesting thing is that if I click and drag, it does capture the region and send to evernote. However, I am usually off quite a bit, because I can't see my outline.

Has anyone experienced this?

I use this function many times a day, as a way to take quick notes when appropriate and would sure like to see my crosshairs again.

Note: this DOES work properly when I'm only using the laptop and NOT connected to external monitors.

Thanks, Brad

Hi.  And hmmn.  Not a multi-screen expert,  but I also have a Dell (Inspiron) running two external screens: HDMI and USB (via an AOC driver).  My screen grabs work OK when I use them - I'm getting a 'cross hair' that I can use to outline any part of any of my screens.  We're a (mainly) user-supported forum here and as a subscriber you should be able to raise this with Evernote - they may have some suggestions as to settings.  Do your screens all have the same resolution?  How are you initiating the screen grab?  Via the hotkeys?  No idea if any of that is relevant,  but it might help spark some suggestions this end...

I figured out what the issue was from playing around.

It seems to be located in the following hub  https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07VLLKHBV/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_q167Db8WMM0TG that I needed to buy in order to connect all my peripherals to the new xps 13.

I currently have my wireless logitech M510 mouse connected into one of the USB ports of this hub (I tried both USB 2.0 and 3.0). For years I have configured all my mouse buttons to activate certain Evernote tasks like jump to a search and create a new note. However, the particular clipping function does not work with this hub. If I unplug the hub and connect the mouse and a monitor directly, the hot key works perfectly. But I need more ports!

I bought this hub thinking I could plug all my peripherals in, especially the serial AND the hdmi monitor connections. However, I can only use one at a time. The hub is just not robust enough for two monitors - and apparently this one mouse hotkey function of clipping.

So I have ordered another adapter that will accommodate the hdmi connection with a USB 3 to plug in my mouse.

Having a mouse button configured to clip a region into Evernote has been a real productivity boost for me. It's a quick way to take a note. I'm hoping the new adapter works and will report back.

unfortunately, the adapter didn't work...this wireless mouse REALLY wants to be in its own port.....i have the clipping functionality I want when i plug the the mouse usb adapter directly into a USB C / Thunderbolt port. The only problem with that is that the adapter mentioned in my previous posts will not run both monitors at once (HDMI and Serial). I'm assuming this is due to power??

Does anyone have experience with that multiport adapter? If I could get that to work with both monitors, then the mouse can have its own dedicated port. I REALLY miss that clipping function....

With the hub you posted I have no experience, neither with hubbing on a windows notebook.

But I have experience with hubs on a USB-C / Thunderbolt connection with my MacBookPro.

The hub you posted may be called a „hub“ by its creators, but it looks more than an overloaded multiport-device. These often have problems with providing enough power to all outlets, even when they have an USB-C charging port. This is often routed to charge the laptop only. The price of this „hub“ indicates they use cheap chipsets designed for port adapters. They transfer the signal, but not the power.

Real hubs start in the 150-200€-region. I have one on my desk at home, and did not run into any problems up to now. It can connect 2 external HDMI-4K-monitors with 60Hz, which is easier on the eyes than the 30Hz found in cheaper hubs.

i-tec Thunderbolt™ 3 Dockingstation; 2X 4K/60Hz oder 1x 5K/60Hz; 2X Thunderbolt™ 3, Power Delivery, 1x GLAN, 4X USB 3.0, 1x USB 3.0 Ladeport, Lesegerät für SD Karten, 1x Audio/Mikrofon Jack 3.5mm

With the „hub“ adapters, I tend to use small ones with less ports. They tend to work better than the big ones with more options.

Thanks PinkElephant. I did a little more playing around and realized it was having the VGA monitor plugged in that is causing the problem,  no doubt for the reasons you indicate.

In fact,  I just posted the following review to this product. I will paste it here as it is relevant.

"This is a good product with a variety of ports. I bought it to work with my new Dell xps 13 which has three thunderbolt / USB C ports.

I have two monitors that i connect with my laptop...however, connecting the VGA into this device will give a nice display on the monitor but unfortunately breaks a function I perform daily.

It's very important to me to capture a region of the screen to make a screenshot. This is the function when you get cross hairs and are able to drag an area to take a screen shot. This is a very useful option that i can no longer use as long as the VGA monitor is connected to this hub. I have tested and tried different variations to no avail.  When the VGA monitor is connected and I activate the function to capture a region, the display just goes wonky. Capturing does actually work, however, but with a wonky display and no cross hairs, I can only guess at where I want to stop.

I realize that this might be a little thing and I admit it's a very quirky break, but being able to capture regions (something I do daily) makes me give it a 4 star."

So I guess I should spring for another adapter (USB C to VGA and HDMI if there is a such a thing) to see if I can get this VGA monitor to work on the dell xps....

Thanks for the feedback. For my MacBook Pro, I use the large docking described above in the HomeOffice. For mobile use, I just recently bought a 4-in-1 adapter just for graphics: USB-C to HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI and VGA. I did not want to be out of options when trying to present my stuff somewhere. But I think it is meant to work 1:1.

USB C Hub, Weton 4 in 1 Typ-C Hub Adapter Dex Station USB C auf 4K HDMI/VGA/DVI/Mini Display Multiport Adapter für MacBook Pro 2016/2017, Neues MacBook, Sumsung S8, Huawei Mate 10 und mehr

Since VGA is a rather aged standard, probably it does not go along well with other standards. Maybe splitting the task between 2 adapters could be a solution. It should be in the specs of the Dell what visual output options it supports - depends on the installed GPU as well.

I had the same issue on a Lenovo Yoga laptop connected to two displays. The Yoga had a higher resolution vs. the other two equal resolution displays and the Clip Screenshot that I love to use from the Evernote Icon Action was distorting everything and going only to the laptop display (not where I want to select).

The issue was solved by establishing the laptop's screen resolution equal to the external displays. Now works without an issue.

Cheers!
