  2. If this is that, check for the app version. My problem was solved with upgrading to 8.20.369737. I have upgraded tonight to iOS 12.3., and have not used EN since, but with iOS 12.2. and this app version, things were o.k.

If not, it may help to upgrade the app and clean out system residue: Open EN, sync, close the app, completely switch the iOS device off and restart it (maybe even with the option described in the apple support base for a system cleanup - how depends on having a home button or not).

If it still does not work, deinstall and reinstall, again with a full system restart in between.

And if ist still does not work, get to the guys in support. They told me on my ticket that the freezing-on-search is solved, and my experience is that this is indeed settled (iOS and app see above, iPhone 6S+ and iPad Pro 10.5).

Hint: When I open EN, especially on a weak connection and after doing some work on the cloud based data through my other devices (Mac, Win-PC or web), it may seem as being frozen for some seconds. It is not, it is just syncing, visible at the little wheel Turing at the top of the screen.

  3. Never had the Evernote edition scanner, so I can’t comment on this. I think doing the conversion to a standard ix500 is probably the best solution, because even if it will be fixed one day for Mojave, the next update may shake up things again, and again, and ...

Because I just switched OS from Win 10 to Mac Mojave, I want to contribute another observation: The ScanSnap software from Fujitsu is quite different between Win and Mac, and the windows app to me seems far better in its functions and options. The MacOS app is quite rudimentary in comparison.

What is a nice workaround is the option to scan to the mobile app, and send it from there into EN. So if using a cloud service is not a problem (some don’t want it, for legal or personal reasons), you should take a look at this option as well. It is flexible, both ways can be set up and used at discretion.

  4. Funny thread, now running over 3 web pages. There seem to be many that „leave“, but somehow still stay on to tell everybody how badly they were treated.

Let us do a comparison, with mobility:

    - Someone who is on the free account is like a hitchhiker, traveling from A to B on the goodwill of others (of course there is a reason for a free account, be it marketing strategy or an easy sharing option for non subscribers, but I am talking about people who decided for a free account, use it for the core functions and have no intention to ever pay for what they get. With EN, you can stay infinitely, other services will throw you out after a while). Fine, but stop bitching that the seat was with crumbs and a shock absorber needs service. You take it as it is, you may even have some nice talk with the driver, but that is it.

    - Then there is owning a car. It is as it is when you buy, you will have it serviced, but it will not be upgraded, so newer models will have more gadgets, and sometimes things you would like to have. This would compare to a purchased piece of software, which EN does not offer, other note taking apps do. So pick your choice, but don’t blame others that the decision showed itself later to be not as good as another one would have been. In hindsight we are all little Einsteins.

    - And then there is renting a car or a ride, or buy a ticket for public transport. Then I get a new service every time I am using it, and I have a valid contract with the other party, money for service. Then I am financing the whole thing with my share, and have the right for reasonable service in terms of the contractual conditions.

    Translation into this subject:

Hey, BASIC users (those who use it as a full service without wanting to pay): Stop bitching, take it as it is, helps to improve it etc. But do not blame others if you do not get what you would like to have. It is your decision to be with EN, and you can stay on for free or leave for good. EN makes sure you have access to your data (even when you came from a paid model with a ton of content, and are now on BASIC), and the possibilities to download your stuff and leave are numerous and well documented. Nobody is locked into anything.

All the rest: Use the access to the company we have, help get what you want and need by feeding support with good, reasonable input.

My impression is that EN has and is still gaining momentum to improve things, front end (what we are all talking about) as well as back end (which is rarely discussed, but works phenomenal in speed and accuracy). And yes, there is plenty of room for improvement because things are as they are. My feeling is that my data is in the right place, and I invest some time into helping to get things done for better.

EN support in general is friendly, reacts reasonably fast, usually has a lot of questions (which is probably needed for reproducibility), and stays with a claim as long as it is settled or clear that it is not a bug, but a feature not built into the current software. I am fine with this, a few providers do better, many are worse.

  5. No problem when it suits your workflow.

As many others I am operating a Synology as well. Testing Note Station, I was not convinced from the searchability including attachments and pictures, and from the access to my notes when traveling. Yes, I run my own VPN-tunnel with fast Connections, but when I am away, nobody can restart the stuff just in case ...

So I decided for my usecase that I stick with both.

  6. Just to keep this thread current:

Yesterday I have tried to reproduce the freezing to send a video clip about it to the support team.

Well, as I say I tried: No freezing !

Support came back to me today and told that they believe the freezing was solved (or at least reduced to some unknown sequence of events) with the latest iOS app release as of 24th of April 2019. I am now on ver 8.20.369737 of the EN app, with iOS 12.2. What I have now is a new search text field that opened above the rightmost column, where the individual notes are displayed. I have no problem with this, even when I do not understand why it was placed there - if you observe the same it probably means we are on the same version.

As I could not freeze the app as before, I would like to call it a day concerning this issue. But as many of you had the same issue, maybe you could update (if necessary), try as well and give some feedback.

Would be good if this is out of our workflows for the future. Still enough to do on the iOS app, IMHO ...

  7. For me it seems there must be an additional factor: MBP, i7, 32GB, 2TB, latest version of MacOS and EN - no issue in opening whatever. Multipage pdfs behave quite similar to plaintext notes, and this means fast.

But because my MacBook is new, it had only a month or so to collect clutter. Does reorganizing the database (hold option Key when clicking on HELP-menu, additional options will appear)  take any effect ?

  8. My observation about the apps behavior when restarting:

If there is a search string in the search text field, and the app is left (but still open), when coming back to the app it will freeze. It seems that the search will start once the app is open, right into a deadlock with restarting. It does not matter what text string, any intro in this field will lead to a "search-freeze".

The only workaround (this is clearly no "solution") is to close the app and restart it. When it opens, my impression is that the text string is still there. Then it seems there is some initializing going on, the screen goes away, comes back, and shortly after the app is usable again.

Uninstalling or setting the iPad back does not seem to affect things. This is buggy, not a once-in-a-time iOS confusion.

Very weird ! Very obstructive to the workflow !

What I do not observe: Multiple attempts until it recovers. One close-open is always sufficient to get things back. Sometimes it takes a little after restarting until it reacts, but in these cases you can see the data connection wheel spinning, meaning that there is a sync going on.

  9. My personal solution:

    Go to the note

Create an external link through the share-process

Send this link to my ToDo-Manager, in my case Things 3 (Mac/iOS only)

This creates a new item in my ToDo-list. There I can set recurring reminders, Due-Dates, etc. By clicking on the link, the EN-note with the content will open automatically. Any good ToDo-Manager will do a much better job in this, and you have all reminders in one place.

  10. Yes, i have found this. But it will cut parts of the picture away (which is the concept of cropping, I know).

What I was looking for is a reduction of file size (typically by reducing the resolution / pushing up the compression rate of the JPEG-compression) without visually cutting parts of the picture away.

To achieve this I currently use the app PicsArt, which is a nuisance, because in the free version it forces a lot of ads on you. But it is the only simple app I know that will reduce the file size without modifying the picture. Just the resolution drops, depending on your input.

  11. Tone is like a painting in the museum, you like it or not, I personally have not problem if the release notes do NOT read all like

    • somebody has died, and this has to be announced,
    • or because it’s Easter, we have hidden a few Easter-bugs in this, for you to discover ...

No problem with some easy-going release-text, as long as (!) it is followed by a brief and concise description of what I can expect when I install.

  12. How new is new ?

And have you activated file vault ?

My experience is from a MBPro, new and shiny. A little more horsepower than the air, but it was not working well for the first days.

With support from the apple hotline, we found out that there was a LOT of background activity related to syncing hundreds of GB with iCloud plus files moved from my Win-PC and building the encrypted structure on the SSD. Because EN in itself is a database, there are many transactions going on while you are typing. It is not a simple editor, grabbing letters from the keyboard as you go hacking away.

If there is this background stuff (check for a process called „mds“ in the activity monitor, another is „windowserver“), it takes away a lot of CPU power. The Apple support has the chance to run a diagnosis through the web, so use it.

It was not an EN issue, I had „beach balls of death“ in pages, safari and other apps as well, when EN was not even opened.

After the initial stuff was though, everything started to work fine, as expected.

  13. Why bother about this ? YouTube has for years taken the garbage down when releasing, and who cared ?

For me it is important that

    1. there are releases (this seems o.k., including the quite active beta scene)
    2. they solve issues we all want to be solved (yes, room for improvement, but getting better)
    3. the new stuff should be free of new bugs (yes, some more room for improvement ...)

So if they keep the guys that really count with the coding, and the marketing dptmt. do whatever they do, it is o.k. for me.

Or is anybody here who wants the marketing guys do the coding, and the SW-engineers write release letters instead ?

  14. Hello, this is a user forum, so help is based on any of us having time to look after things. It is not driven by EN staff ...

If the pics show on your mobile devices, the „master“ database in the cloud is intact.

Maybe there is an issue on your local windows database.

If you press and hold the option key before going to the help menu, more options than usual will show. Many  are related to database issues. You may try if using one of these options will make the pics reappear.

Caution 1: This puts the local database at small but existing risc. Be sure to force a sync before you start. If you have notebooks stored only locally, these can be damaged or lost. All notes on the web server (which is all not-local notebooks) are save there, and can be rebuild from the web if necessary.

Caution 2: The reindexing, rebuilding etc. takes time. Depending on the size of your EN database, the PC you run etc. it can take several minutes (in my case, i7 with SSD) to do the job. Wait until it finishes, and never start 2 jobs at the same time. Look up the findings (like feedback boxes, notes with lost / broken links etc.) before proceeding. The further down you go the list, the deeper it goes into the database, and the more damage can result.

If not sure, open a support ticket.

  15. Maybe it is officially not supported, but it can be convinced to work. Here is a screenshot of the procedure described by DTLow in the post above:

    Go to Safari

    Enter Evernote.com

Now give a long press on the refresh symbol. A little window will open: Request desktop site. Click it

Evernote will open, believing to be on a desktop. Log in, go to your profile, and quit whatever device is too much.

  16. As I have posted above, IMHO there are two independent issues:

    - When there is something in the search field, and you leave the app to open some other, and return then to EN, It freezes. Solution: Kill the app, which will clear the search field, and reopen it. This works for me 100/100, on iPad Pro and iPhone. And yes, it is a bloody nuisance.

    - Sometimes, when I open the app, it is unresponsive. This happens typically after I have entered a lot of new information through my Mac or Win client. Then the wheel of online traffic will be turning, and the app will not react while it is sucking in all the new metadata (the notes itself stay on the server with iOS ). The app is not frozen, just busy. Solution: Wait a few seconds, until the data traffic is through.

Setting up the right circumstances, I can reproduce both cases.

  17. Start yelling at Google instead .... it is their browser that causes the problems in the first line.

And do not tell that you would no pay them - you do, with your data !

If you want to stop this, and get a working webclipper I would suggest to switch to Firefox or Safari instead, or any of the smaller browsers. You will find they work just fine.

Plus install a default search engine that works without generating a pile of user data from your searches. Google will grab whatever you are searching for, incognito or not. The incognito mode only prevents data to be saved locally on your device, not with big brother. I suggest using DuckDuckGo, works just fine without personalized saving what you are looking for.

  18. The fix will only be delivered to those FF-devices that participate in the „Study“-Program - this means the program where you agree to send anonymous data for improvement measures to the FF-team.

If you clicked this away and do not participate, the fix will not be delivered automatically !

For how to get the fix, I have an article, but it is in German. So maybe search for this info in the internet.

And there is no fix for Android, as much as i have heard (don’t use Android myself).

  19. Nobody can be sure ...

Just if you read the threads in the forum, it is

    • too few users to be a breach in recent times at EN itself (then the forum would probably be flooded and offline by now ...)
    • Bad guys seem to be poking around, trying to enter, and then searching for data leading to cryptocurrency
    • typically the claim is from BASIC users that find out they can not enter because there is foreign device dialed in, often concealed as an iPhone from some remote (VPN)location. Probably among these are users that use the service less often than those who pay, and will not look after account security that much. What is it worth when it is free ?

So for me this is strong evidence that the data results from other leaks. I do not think that outgoing CEOs would hack themself into user accounts. They don’t need to, they have received money from the paying users the direct way 😎
