(Archived) REQUEST: Sub folder / note book

Mosser

Idea

Titel says it all I'm really stating to like ever note but as an earlier onenote user there are one thing i really would like to see in ever note and thats subnotebook

reason is i use evernote for university so when i have a course i organize my evernote with all the lectures slides and exercises and other stuff

but lets say i have Discrete maths. then i create the note book for DMAT. but it gets full of stuff quickly.

so if i could make a note book in that note book for slides and one for lectures it would not get as cluttered

i don't know if this is the right forum part to put it in but ill try here and see how it goes.

It's the right place and it's been discussed a lot.

The Evernote model is Stacks, Notebooks and Notes, it is very unlikely that this will change. Instead, users are encouraged to utilise tags for further organisation.

If you search the forum there are a lot of topics around this.

I agree with Metrodon - use tags.

But Evernote also allows a structure using Stacks and Notebooks.

Stack name: Mathematics

Notebook name: Slides

Notebook name: Lectures

Hi. Welcome to the discussion forums!

I think the previous posters have already explained Evernote's design decision to use a combination of notes, notebooks, stags, and tags without supporting a deep-nested folder hierarchy. This system becomes an obstacle for new users who want to replicate their physical file cabinets or digital folder structures inside the app, and I think it can be discouraging or frustrating. I know it was for me at first!

Maybe Evernote will follow your suggestion and change this system. You never know! In the meantime, I would recommend treating your account as an external brain (our brains don't use nested folders) and considering some alternative organizational strategies. I use an unorthodox minimalistic approach to my data (http://www.princeton.edu/~cmayo/minimalistorganization.html) and arrange my Evernote account making heavy use of information-rich titles (http://www.princeton.edu/~cmayo/evernote-organization.html). I also eschew notebooks, which I have found unnecessary / distracting in my system (http://www.princeton.edu/~cmayo/evernote-notebook.html). Although I don't use them much, I strongly recommend considering tags, and some of the innovative ways of using them that others have developed (http://www.princeton.edu/~cmayo/evernote-tag.html). You might find (as I have) that your account can be well-organized without lots of nested notebooks.

By the way, I am also in university, and I think Evernote has helped me a lot there. I've written a lot about it on my site (I've already posted plenty of links to it above), but don't forget to take a look at the advice Evernote's site has (http://evernote.com/schools/resources/library/).
