Selecting "Open in New Window" causes the note window to be half off-screen

Recommended Posts

When I View or edit a note and choose "Open in New Window" from the "..." menu of the note, the new note window opens at halfway off-screen.

I then have to use the Move command of the note window to bring it into a useful space on my monitor, in order to edit the note. I have attached a screenshot showing the result of opening a note in a new window.

Has anyone else experienced this?  I opened a help ticket 9 days ago, with no support having happened so far.

Random windows placement seems to be a Windows feature rather than an Evernote issue.  Fortunately Win+<arrow> will jump a window in any direction,  grabbing the title bar allows a drag,  and if you have Windows 11 there are automatic windows layouts you can use.  I have a 2-screen system with (unfortunately) slightly different resolutions,  so sometimes I open a note window on one screen that is over the screen boundaries,  but moving it to the other screen will fix the issue.  If you have a ticket number from Support,  you're in the queue;  but as they're a little busy,  9-10 days seems to be the current normal wait time.

Are you working on a Laptop and often change connected displays? In this case I've seen this effect some times because applications (not only EN) save sub-window's placement and try to re-use it even when display extensions change. It's a often heared discussion around responsibility for this: Is it Windows who should avoid this? (my opinion: no) Is it the application who should care about? (my opinion: yes. But many apps (including EN seems to be blind regarding display sizes...)

If you are using display managers like MaxTo that allows to align windows to special grid positions, the effect might appear in some cases (on my screen, some application title bars get hidden). MaxTo corrects such mis-placed windows by simply modifying any window border.

Hi @gazumped,

Good afternoon.  I wish to apologize for the delay in replying.

I would like to agree with you that random application window placement tends to be a "feature" of the Windows OS, but that has not been my experience - except for Microsoft Money - and that was more than 20 years ago.

No such issue since, until Evernote - currently installed version 10.64.3-win-ddl-public (20231016152524) | Editor: v176.15.0 | Service: v1.76.1.  it has been two weeks since I opened the ticket with support, so they must have their hands full.

Evernote issued a brief note to one of my and someone else's 2-week old tickets to apologise that there's a restructure going on to help improve response times.  You'll probably have one soon,  if it hasn't already dropped.  I'd guess they initially rather underestimated the staffing needed for a support team,  and the problem with scaling up is always is that you need experienced techical staff who are familiar with the features - and failures - of the system.  Training takes time.  Be as patient as possible - they will get to you soon!

@AlbertR, I ask that you forgive my delayed reply.  I do use EN on a connected (to my laptop) large monitor, but the laptop doesn't travel anywhere and I don't change or disconnect various monitors.  I actually am not using any display managers, fwiw...

Support closed my ticket after sending a generic response saying to clear my browser cache before starting Evernote Web.  I made specific reference to the Windows application when opening the ticket, so that was disappointing, to wait over 3 weeks to learn my ticket was likely not read attentively.  Sigh.
