Why won't the updated app let me have access to my free account?

I updated my free account yesterday because I received a notice telling me to do so because of a security threat.  But now Evernote is preventing access to my free account without my upgrading to an account that's not free.

Please help

Hi.  Device? OS? Evernote old version?  New version?  What exactly is the error message you are now seeing when you try to log in?  It sounds like you have too many devices connected to your account.  See https://help.evernote.com/hc/en-us/articles/218558068 for more.

What exactly did "updating your free account" involve? This isn't clear to me.
