There are several existing threads on this, so probably starting a new one is not going to gain it any traction. I guarantee that there are people who use quick notes and all that is needed to have them show up in the forums is for Evernote to remove this ready access.

Does it have to be an either/or, zero sum kind of thing? Version 6 gave one options. Choose your preferences.

Hi.  So dumb question first - why do you want to open Evernote?  To search your notes?  There's a shortcut for that.  To add a new note?  There's one for that too - see the bottom of the left panel for details.  In my case,  right clicking the icon also gives me an "open Evernote" option...

Thanks, @gazumped. I'm aware of the shortcut options.  I am looking for a one-click on the mouse way of doing it, as that's how I work, and that's how I did it for many years in v 6 and prior versions.  As I recall, v6 gave one options as to the behavior of the tray icon when clicked. Perhaps it's just one more feature lost in transition to v10?

  3. Evernote has what is, in effect, a "close to system tray" function.  I like that.  What I miss from v6 is a simple, direct way to open Evernote with one click on the system tray.

As it is now, a left lick opens the Quick Note window, which I never use. The Quick Note window does offer an Open Evernote option, with a further click.  Likewise, a left click on the tray icon offers several choices, including Open Evernote. Again, two clicks, not one.

But what I really miss is the ability to Open Evernote 10 with a single click on the tray icon.  Am I missing something? Is there a way to do this?

    Thanks!

I agree that this works in this specific circumstance. However there are many other ways of getting the view. This is probably not an exhaustive list:

    • Going to a note in shortcuts
    • Going to a note from recent notes
    • Hitting a backlink from a note
    • A note accessed from ctrl+Q
    • Going to the parent note from a task in the task view
    • Going to a note in shortcuts Doesn't show the Notes List.
    • Going to a note from recent notes Doesn't show the Notes List
    • Hitting a backlink from a note Shows the Notes List, but changes the note displayed in the right-hand pane
    • A note accessed from ctrl+Q Doesn't show the Notes List
    • Going to the parent note from a task in the task view Not sure about this. I don't use tasks.

@Mike P, working through this was a learning experience, for which thanks. Not really solutions to my issue, however.

  5. Friends,

This is not a "solution" per se, but as I continue to become more familiar with v10, I have discovered that there is a simple and perhaps too obvious way to avoid this issue.

    (1) Open the search menu.
    (2) Type in your search term(s).
    (3) Hit return without clicking on any of the items presented in the Go to . . . list.

For me, again in my Windows 10 desktop setup, this presents me with the good old, three-pane view, with what appears to be pretty much the same "Go to . . ." list options, now displayed in the center-left Notes List

Make sure you click in the displayed note as if to edit it, then press Ctrl+Alt+2, which is the shortcut for the Note List and should leave the focus on the note. This works for me with a note that I displayed from a shortcut. It doesn't work with notes from the Recent Notes segment.

Ah ha!  That's almost it.  Thanks very much, @Dave-in-Decatur. This move does bring back the note list.  The note list appears in its panel.  But the card for the displayed note in the main panel is not shown. Nor the cards for notes related to the search that found the displayed note.  It appears to be just the list of all notes, in whatever sort order is specified. Not especially useful in the end.

This view is one of the weirdest things in V10. I have not found an easy way of getting to the note in the normal view with the note highlighted in the note list so you can see the context in which it was created.  The hard way of partially doing it (on Windows desktop version) is . . . . .

In practice it might be better to ask why you need the note in the three panel view. For example, it might be easier to do a created date search/filter around the creation date of the note.

The situation is probably worse recently as it is quite possible to have a note in the view pane which is not even in the displayed note list. This has been mentioned in other threads.

Interesting and ingenious. Thanks, @Mike P. This behavior is weird indeed. The hard way is a fascinating exercise, but way to hard. As to why I need the three panel view, perhaps it's just habit. I like to see the note in context, I guess. That's the way my Evernote has worked for the last 14 years.

In any event, it appears that, as things stand in v10, there is no solution.

  8. In my old Evernote v6 and before, I used to always have three columns displayed on the main window: At the far left, the Side Bar with my list of notebooks, tags etc. Next, at center left, I had what I believe is called the Note List, which listed individual notes.  I had this Note List set to display as Cards. Then the rest of the screen, to the right of the Note List, displayed the current individual note.

Now, with the latest version 10 release for Windows, when I search for an item and there's only one result, or when I click on a shortcut in the Side Bar, the Note List disappears and I'm left with only two columns, the Side Bar and the current single note.

My question is, in the situation when I only have only the Side Bar and a single note displayed, how to I get the Note List back?

    Thanks for any advice.

Just select the entire column, copy (strg+c), then paste as plaint text (strg+shift+v) - should insert plain text in paragraphs…

Yes, @HeBolz. That works. Not sure what "strg" stands for on my PC, but ctrl+ works. Then, after pasting plain text (past and match style), one of course can delete the unwanted table. Thanks!

Good question. You might actually try (if you haven't yet) selecting the whole table, copying, then "Paste and match style," which might strip out the code that creates the table structure and just leave the text.

    @Dave-in-Decatur, yes, this does it.

The box around the content is kind of a baby blue, with a boxed arrow in the upper right corner that opens a drop down menu. One of the options is "Delete Table."  There is no option for simplifying format and no magic wand. So I think it is a table.

    In sum, here's what works:

    (1) Select the whole table (not just the text)
    (2) Copy the whole thing
    (3) Move the cursor out of the box, and then use Paste and match style (ctrl+shift+v), which seems to be the same as paste plain text.
    (4) Delete the table by selecting the whole table and using the drop down menu in the upper right corner.

  11. I'm using the latest update of version 10 on a Windows 10 PC.  I have some old notes from version 6 that appear in version 10 in tables with a single column containing plain text. I'm having difficulty getting the plain text out of the table, or in other words, converting the table to plain text.  I can do it by carefully selecting the text, copying, then pasting outside the table, then deleting the table. But it's tricky selecting just the text in the table without selecting the entire table.

Is there an easy way to do this?

    Thanks!

  12. OK, further research and testing reveals an interesting new twist.  The problem of recent searches not showing up in the list on my Windows 10 desktop Evernote app persists. But when I try a search using the Evernote web app (which I hardly ever use), that new search does show up in the recent searches list in the web app.

Then, when I go back to my desktop app, the search that I just executed in the web app shows up in the Recent searches area of the desktop app. But searches in the desktop app continue to fail to appear in the Recent searches list of either the desktop app or the web app.

The above behavior means that I can clear out the old "recent" search list in my desktop app by doing executing searches in the web app, since the latter then replace the former.

    I'm perplexed.

Hi.  Not affecting me (AFAICS) - have you selected "everywhere" in the search box?  Is 'Standard' search showing?  Have you tried a new search to see if that appears?

Yes, everywhere is selected. Standard search is showing.  And, as I said, I've done many, many searches subsequent to the three very old searches that are stuck in the "Recent searches" area.  Only those three old items populate that area, and actual recent searches do not appear.

  14. I'm using the latest version (10.67.4) for Windows 10 desktop.  When I open the search dropdown menu, just under the Search box, where one enters one's search terms, there's a section that perports to show one's recent searches.  I have three past searches in that list.

My problem is that those searches are from 3-4 weeks, and many subsequent searches, ago. My "Recent searches" list seems stuck.

Any ideas as to how to unfreeze it?  Is this a known issue affecting others?

    Thanks for your ideas!

There is a way of temporarily clearing the yellow highlighting from the current note without loosing the rest of the search results. In the note you are working in, press ctrl+F to open the Find in note dialog. The search box is pre-populated with your search term. Press delete to remove the search term and all the yellow highligting in the current note is removed. However, you do need to keep the Find in note dialog open, as if you close it, it will repopulate with the search term and the highlighting reappears.

Thanks, MIke.  This is interesting.  I'll try it.  But I can't help but think it's far from ideal. Evernote needs to fix this.

  16. Thanks all for your kind replies.

I just checked. Ctrl+Alt+F in Evernote 6 starts a fresh search in All Notebooks. You don't have to fiddle with the extra steps of clearing the search query (with the "x") and returning to All Notebooks.

Evernote 6 also has "Evernote Icon Action" options in the Windows taskbar icon, accessible by right clicking the icon. This allows setting up the taskbar icon so that one click (1) opens the app and (2) starts a fresh search (3) in All Notebooks.  That's one click vs. a multiple step process.

  17. Hello,

I'm a long time Evernote user just getting accustomed to v10 for Windows desktop.  So here's my first question.  In Evernote 6, there was a short cut that would start a fresh search of all notebooks, with the previous search query cleared out.  Is there such a shortcut, or mouse click, that will do that?

I've tried ctrl + alt + f in v10, but it seems typically to leave the previous search query in the box and the notebook from the previous search selected. So to start a fresh search I have to clear the search box and the notebook from the previous search

    Thanks

  18. I'd like to see this feature implemented.  I have many notes with attachments, with all kinds of words therein.  But sometimes I just want to find some simple information such as a name or an address, and would like to search the typed text only, narrowing results to the typed text only.  As it is now, I get all kinds of results from PDFs and other attachments that are extraneous to such a simple search.
