    >>> But long-term free users do not help the business.

That is simply wrong statement. Free users do help long-term. They are the starting point for those who pay - just study the customer curve for any given product.
It is adding new limitations to those who got onto a hook of the product during previous 5 years that do not help business.

Wow, are you off base! For 8 very long years, Evernote has patiently supported and encouraged free-users. The company hoped the "starting-pointers" would eventually pay for the service. Evernote realized their former CEO's assumption was wrong. The new CEO is working to correct the mistake. Based on the gnashing of teeth by a few of these vocal long-term free-users, the new plan is having the intended effect.

  2. Evernote has a unique method to count the number of synchronized notebooks. All you have to do is create notebooks, one at a time, until Evernote warns you that you have reached the limit. At that point, you know you have 250 synchronized notebooks.

They have not developed a system to count the number of local notebooks. I believe the H.R. department is trying to hire some Mesopotamians or Babylonians to develop an Evernote-based counting system.

  3. Yes, I think you are right that printing is not a priority at Evernote. There are posts requesting better printing, but I remember reading other posts where users said they never use the print option. I have 35,000 notes and use Evernote daily over the last 8 years. I cannot recall a single instance where I needed to print a note. Paper scanners, the cloud, email, smart phones, and apps have completely replaced my need to print hard copies. I prefer to rely on electrons over paper.

here's always the preserve tags option when copying a note.

Get out of town! I never saw that.

I've got hundreds of filled-in phone call templates over the past few years, and I never noticed that. The phone rings I copy the blank template while making some pleasant repartee, then start filling in the copied template.

Many thanks for pointing that out.

  5. Totally agree - I don't mean to hijack the subject, but... the vote count has little correlation to reality. Especially when the vote count can be used on 1.)  multiple threads re-stating the same topic or 2.) individual posts that contain a variety of topics or 3.) confusing vague posts.

  6. Feature voting, if done properly, can be useful. (Notice the big IF)

I spent 20 years in marketing and from my perspective, the voting process in the Evernote forum is not being done properly. Many of the voting subjects are vague, repetitive, confusing, or ambiguous.

The numbers are just not there, even after repeated urging by several users.

There are some topics that Evernote does not need a Forum vote. I noticed Evernote did not position their "Big Gorilla" post about the new Pricing Plan to allow voting.

  7. I agree with GrumpyMonkey. The number of button clicks is laughably minuscule, (including features that generate tons of user interest). Even with the down-vote option turned off, most of the vote totals don't even reach double digits! This subject, posted half a year ago, just hit 10.

And I have only seen one survey from Evernote. That survey had nothing to do with features. It was 100% devoted to how much I would be willing to pay for Evernote.

I have a hunch the average of all those survey responses show no resemblance to the 40% price increase Evernote just announced.

I believe it is getting ignored because it doesn’t get a critical mass of attention

I think you are correct. The majority of Evernote users don't have a recurring need to search for an internal partial character stream.

Also, the variety of requests on the post you mentioned don't relate to this OP's request.

EDIT: I see that you are using the same request on the last dozen of your posts. SPAM is not permitted. I will report this.

I would rather wait for a couple seconds to get a result than a non searchable software.

Well, this request for internal partial character searches has been mentioned in this forum a few times over the past 7 years. Honestly, I think you will be waiting a long time for Evernote to re-write their multiplatform software codes for a request that does not seem to have a lot of support from the users.

I have a note on sqllocaldb, a computer command. I couldn't remember the command but remember localdb. Searching for localdb returned nothing.

Finding information quickly and efficiently is one of Evernote's strengths. There are several techniques to enhance search results.-  for example:

    • detailed consistent structured titles
    • YYMMDD date prefix in title for date ranges
    • tags (lower case only, no spaces, singular - not plural)
    • intitle: search
    • key words in text
    • good understanding of Evernote's search grammar

In the example mentioned - if I realized that I could remember localdb, but not sqllocaldb, then I would add localdb as a keyword assist for future searches. I'd also add a tag.

I would be concerned with the work required to index every possible sequential group of letters in every word in my 40,000+ notes and still be searchable with my phone. I doubt partial internal character or partial number search will be supported anytime soon.

  11. I stopped sharing my Evernotes when I realized I had over 800 shared notes. I started wondering about security.

It is easy to find the shared notes with sharedate:* , but a pain in the butt to remove the share feature.

The procedure I follow seems really dumb, especially the turn on / turn off Public Link steps. But I have not found an easier and shorter method. It has to be done individually in Evernote Windows.

    • Find notes with sharedate:*
    • Right Click on the title (Note List panel)
    • Share
    • Modify Sharing
    • Click Enable Public Link (turn on) - this step really seems assbackwards and unsafe
    • [EDIT - newer verision allows turn off feature - much more logical]
    • Click Enable Public Link (turn off)
    • Stop Sharing Note
    • Close
    • Repeat

Is there an easier or safer method?

  12. By the way, that quote about two types of companies came from the Director of the FBI - James Comey

Safety in numbers? I agree as long as you don't use Evernote to store confidential or private data such as bills, check statements, real estate transactions, medical information, tax documents, etc.. Here are some comments from a lot of average Evernote users.

  13. Mark Twain did not have to worry about ransomware, unlike some major hospital chains that recently were forced to pay out.

Or get hacked in 2014 like Target, Neiman Marcus, Home Depot, Blue Cross, Athem, Sony, US Postal Service, Staples, KMart, PF Chang's, JP Morgan, AT&T, and Evernote.

There are two kinds of big companies in the United States. Those who’ve been hacked… and those who don’t know they’ve been hacked.

Of course we do have some other options

I tried responding to the Evernote ticket (how would you rate the support you received?)

I'll let you know if there is a reply.

Here is Evernote's response. Looks like my .exb backups are OK, but now I have to figure out how to export the .enex file from an .exb filel

There is not a way to import a .exb into a new account. You can export the .enex files out of the .exb and import them into a new account.

  15. DTLow - thanks for your suggestion. Just one additional question

    • My nightly backups are .exb from Evernote Windows.
    • The majority of my important notes are PDF files.
    • I have approximately 40,000 notes in 55 notebooks.

Do you think I'll be able to export them all together in one gigantic HTML file? or would it be safer to export into multiple smaller HTML files?

End of the day the files used for ransom ware are the same you would be using for a normal backup against pestilence and the rest of the data destroyers.  If ransom ware were to kick in you wouldn't be able to use your existing account anyway, would you?

Yes, but I would be willing to lose some recent data if I could restore using one of my older backups. Besides nightly and weekly backups, I maintain a set of monthly backups going back 12 months, and quarterly backups for several years stored off-site Yes, quite anal. So if the Evernote cloud is attacked, I will have the majority of my data in a usable format.

If I want to restore to a new account in a timely manner, I would have to buy another Premium account. Evernote's basic 60 MB monthly upload cap would require several months of uploading my 11 GB of data.(7.8 GB for my current primary account and 3.4 GB for my current secondary account)
