  1. Yeah - that's what I was thinking. I think the initial post is a complaint mostly about the UI revamp, but initially it came across to me as an issue with the software not updating vs a dislike for the UI (of which I have a few complaints myself). @benmarullo - see https://discussion.evernote.com/forums/topic/149750-new-ui-experiences-bad-and-good

I'm also still an old version* of Evernote 10 on Windows so I didn't get the UI revamp, but I have it on both my Macs. The UI revamp hasn't come to mobile yet.

    * Somehow it got stuck on 10.62.5 and I'm going to leave it there for as long as I can 😃

Evernote will eventually die if they dont do this.

Are E-ink devices really that popular as far as general computing devices go? I mean, I think this would be cool but I wouldn't think that Evernote's long term viability would depend on it's support of something that has well below 1% marketshare of computing devices?

There is no reason why evernote should not be able to run a version on the latest E-ink devices

All of Evernote's current versions of applications run on the Electron framework, which doesn't run on E-ink devices.

Seeing as how Bending Spoons recently pulled back continued development of their Linux client (running on that same Electron framework), I can't see them investing time into something like this.

  3. I'm mostly getting used to it, but there are still a few things that I don't think are quite as good. The space in between the task and anything else is one of them still for me too.

I do think a little white space is important, but IMO what we currently have now with the UI revamp just seems a tad bit excessive.

Another example... -- I don't have a comparison of the old version anymore, but here it is on the new:

    image.png.8bdd4fc601d7044ef6697d10f888800b.png

There is no empty line between the header and the task or the task and the table. It's just blank padding.

I really wish we could set a preference for those margins and padding.

  4. Isn't part of that space -- the part between the menu bar and the breadcrumb -- a UI bug? For some reason I thought it was and that it was fixed.

I use Evernote on both Windows and Mac, but for some reason I'm on an old version of Windows (like 10.65 or something -- pre UI revamp) and I'm going to keep it like that for as long as I can so I can't test out the latest version of Evernote Desktop on Windows.

But this is what 10.78.2 is like on MacOS Desktop right now FWIW:

    image.thumb.png.f8cf6829cf0eabf5133605996e28a869.png

And when the note is in it's own window:

    image.png.0135588cd6c085d790a1a0230afc445d.png

With the same amount of space being used on the bar for tags and reminder.

  5. Hrmmm - Also -- looking back over previous threads and stuff it really seems to me like Bending Spoons tried to warn people as best they could (without bending over backwards too far anyways).

Legacy software was awesome for many. v10 software is awesome for many. Legacy is going away and it's sad for those that really depend on it. /end (of my two cents)

  6. We should have stickied this awesome comment from someone on October 10, 2023:

They've never made a public announcement about that yet and I wonder if they even have one yet. From my own reading of it, it looks like there are three phases with sunsetting legacy at this point -- where Bending Spoons is trying to come up to speed with where it is at having taken the reigns from the previous team:

    • First phase they tried to make sure that everyone that was on legacy really knew they were on legacy and tried to help (some people might say "trick") them in to upgrading to the new version. Lots of people didn't/don't know there is a new version out there.
    • Second phase they are giving these dire warnings (and some really old clients have already stopped syncing just more ongoing casualties of out-dated software). <--- We are here.
    • Third phase a drop-dead date will be announced.

    From here: https://discussion.evernote.com/forums/topic/147884-evernote-desktop-version-5836507-yes-i-know-just-stopped-syncing-any-ideas/?do=findComment&comment=703064

A belabored and delayed update (see quoted content above):

  7. I'm going through a migration -- testing <maybe> as if I am going to use a different product for reals -- and I'm finding it surprisingly harder to migrate than I anticipated... Workflows have to change, figuring out the thing that will work best long term, learning the new product, etc. I'm doing a lot of note cleanup all along the way too which is tedious to nightmare depending on your number of notes. (A lot of my notes are working-type notes and not archival kinds of notes.)

Knowing what I know now I could do it end-to-end in a few hours (sans note cleanup), but the learning what would work for me part and trying out different things took months of light investigation and then four weeks of heavy investigation and work. It's been a pretty big time commitment for me personally.

Still though, it's not like Evernote itself is going away(*) in 30 23 days -- hopefully the worst-case scenario for the high majority still on Legacy is to upgrade to v10 and really limp along for as long as needed to adjust or migrate.

    * I still think we are going to see people that can't upgrade to v10 for whatever reason that have local only notebooks. They might be in trouble. Guess we'll see.

  8. I love the question and the idea. I wonder if anyone is doing anything new with the API let alone a Raycast extension.

Things at Evernote HQ seem a little volatile(*) to me at the moment with the acquisition, laying off of existing staff, price increases, UI revamp, restructuring of support, announced restructuring of Desktop local data storage, ending of Legacy, etc. The API also hasn't been updated to include Tasks and the RTE implementation broke a few integrations (still broken?) With Reddit and X removing free access to their API, I don't think it would be too far of a stretch for Bending Spoons to want to also charge for their API. If I were working on an integration, I'd worry that my work would be wasted so I'd probably wait a bit to see how it all shakes out first.

So, I'm also curious if anyone is writing an Evernote Raycast extension or any other extension in general and if they have any concerns about any of the above.

(* -- not saying this is a bad thing. Perhaps many of those things were badly needed. It's just a thing.)

As noted above this is also my experience. I wonder whether those people who originally signed up for the beta program for the new UI are getting UI releases ahead of other users or whether it is just "we'll roll it out to a random x% and they can find the bugs for us."

I signed up for the beta and am not seeing the latest new changes either.  The rollout seems random to me.

I *didn't* sign up for the UI beta on my main account and I got it. So -- yeah - randomly testing user interface features on a percentage of the users... That's going to take a while for many people to get used to and makes it interesting from a discussion forum perspective because two people can be on the exact same version of *everything* and still have different user experiences. Asking "which version number are you on" will be a little be less useful than before.

Duolingo has been doing this A/B testing for quite a while and many people just roll with it, but there are still so many that find it confusing even after years of them doing it.

  10. I think they are probably talking about the dictation feature in MacOS in general? If so, I did a quick test in Evernote (v10.77.3) and didn't have any duplication problems -- but I generally don't use it much either and I think the key word was "often" (as opposed to always.) But there could be something funky about the way Evernote is handling it vs an OS thing.

However, I haven't seen any issues at all reported in the forums about it over the last several months either... @SteveMS If you are talking about something different, perhaps let us know or give more details?

    image.gif.88067a3b052fc2a3a95deba620057f7f.gif

I did dictate a couple of paragraphs of longer text in case perhaps the length had anything to do with it (but still had no problems), plus I haven't used this feature much and it seems pretty handy.

  11. I haven't used the snippet view for quite a while since the thumbnails are whacked (https://discussion.evernote.com/forums/topic/80084-control-which-image-shown-in-a-notes-thumbnailsnippet-view/?do=findComment&comment=698178), so I didn't notice extra padding there, but have seen extra padding in many places with the new UI v10 revamp from last month: https://discussion.evernote.com/forums/topic/149750-new-ui-experiences-bad-and-good/?do=findComment&comment=717814

Too much white space seems to be a common complaint with the Desktop UI revamp.

Edit: you can take a survey about the new UI and give feedback here: https://waz9zvkd1f2.typeform.com/newuifeedback

  12. What platform/OS/Evernote version are you using?

On MacOS - Evernote Desktop 10.77.3, it is showing for me in the top-left hand corner in between the tasks and back link indicators.

    image.png.ed0497089e5da5e2baf75b81581cf642.png

On iPhone - Evernote 10.77.0 it shows in the top right hand corner of the screen.

I didn't think the URL was populated from just copying and pasting text for the internet though, I thought you had to use the web clipper to create a new note and then the note would be populated with it? My web clipper looks to be broken right now so I can't test that part still working.

  13. Has anybody posted about this yet? I don't think I've seen it and I just noticed it. This is on Desktop 10.77.3

The "New Note" button is just for a new note

    image.png.870e152e3e36b8adfbe547ae8399c428.png

and then there is a little button to the right with ellipsis that you'd click to get a New Task, Attachment, Audio or Sketch:

    image.png.2fbf93646ab742e03c729fec9a83110d.png

So no more having to double-click to create a new note.

    I like that.

Had I known that they were literally pulling the plug on Legacy a day later, I would have NEVER recommitted to this service.

BTW, it seems like IF YOU SELL services that you can buy on an ANNUAL basis, the TERMINATION date for LEGACY should be a YEAR OUT, so Feb/Mar 2025, not ONE MONTH from now.

I wonder if you could ask for a refund while explaining your case. It might take a few days or weeks to get a response, but it might be worth trying.

I back up all my notes weekly, but I am particularly concerned about encrypted text, which presumably I won't be able to access in any other format. How do I even find all the notes that have that??

    Try entering

    encryption:

into the search. It works on v10 anyway - I don't have legacy anymore to test with.

And has anyone found another platform in which the notebooks carry over?

I think one problem with the Legacy all-in-one export to ENEX is that it doesn't contain notebook information. So if you want to keep notes separated into notebooks, you need to export them one notebook at a time anyway. Notion can import from Evernote directly through Evernote's API (https://www.notion.so/help/import-data-into-notion) and so perhaps it preserves the notebook information. However, I think most other app/platforms import Evernote data from the ENEX file.
