Are notes stored in plain text?

Recommended Posts

I read a letter in a computer magazine which said that Evernote stores notes in plain text.  Is this true?  If so, where does it store them in this way?  On the user's hard drive, on Evernote servers, or both?  Surely this isn't good for privacy?! :o

Hi.  There's a LOT of discussion about privacy and the need for encryption in the forums - please do a search to catch up.

If you have Evernote desktop installed,  then your notes are saved to the hard drive,  and if someone with pretty basic computer skills got hold of the device,  they could probably read some of your notes.  There's a similar risk on all devices in different ways.

There are ways to get around the issues - lock your computer,  don't share passwords,  encrypt documents,  use 2-factor logins;  but the bottom line is that if you can get access to data stored on your computer,  then potentially so can someone else.

There's no such thing as complete security,  even if you kept your information on paper and locked into a safe.  If you're going to record things onto your computer they're already less secure than the stuff you locked away.  If you really want to protect some facts - bank account details and passwords for instance - don't even put them into Evernote!

Was this in a print magazine or is the article available online? Can you link to it if it is online?

It was in a print magazine and they don't seem to put their articles online.  But it was only a brief mention in a letter someone sent in.

:)
