Note List - Making gap smaller between items

I must firstly congratulate EN, as a product team you've successfully made  a once loved application consistently worse with every revision over the last two years, quite the achievement ! 

In this revsion the application is now incredibly slow, even in small to medium notes and for some reason has huge amounts of white space between everything which is great (!?) on a small screen .. 

Is there anyway to activate a 'compact' mode to get it to look like the previous version at all ? Specifically within the notes) but also within the split view where you have note titles at the top and preview at the bottom ?
