Can I not use Apple Pencil to highlight?

I might just be blind or missing something, but can you not use an Apple Pencil to highlight text on an iPad?

Select the text you want to highlight with the pencil, then click on the highlighter tool in the editors options and select the highlighters color.

There is no special pencil mode in EN. Thus the highlighting works as in all other EN workflows, which makes it a bit counterintuitive.
