Gibberish

Recommended Posts

My daughter took a lot of time putting together things for a book she wants to write.  She did it in Evernote because she doesn't always know which computer/ipad will be available.  Now we logged in and all of her work is gibberish.  It looks like what happens when you try to open a document in an unsupported format.  She did not use any documents, but typed and copied and pasted name ideas off of the web.   She can probably recreate all of her work, as inconvenient as that may be.  My issue is if Evernote is going to eat my documents then I don't want to use it.  Does anyone know what is going on or how to fix it?

On what platform are you seeing the gibberish? Web? Mac? iPad? First step would be to check your Web account. I'm unaware of any scenario when text has completely turned to random characters. The first possibility that comes to mind is another language may be set on the device, but that wouldn't look like a bunch of random characters.

The other - slight - possibility is that she has somehow imported a file in a proprietary format and it is being viewed as text.  If the beginning of the scrambled section contains something like, "[Content_Types].xml" or "%PDF-1.4" then she may have a Word docx or pdf file respectively imported as plain text.

Gbarry,

She first found the problem on our ipad and I immediately went to our desktop and checked evernote on the web.  Both places have the same text.

logandb, At the bottom I have pasted the text.  I don't see anything that could indicate a file extension.

Thank you both for your replies.  I appreciate your help in this perplexing matter.

Jlopez, Gbarry and any forum users that might be able to help, will still need you to clarify what you mean by "desktop." As in, in addition to your iPad, what kind of desktop are you using? i.e. a Mac, Windows 7, Windows 8 or the Web version?

Sorry, my desktop is an older windows xp. I have also checked it on my android (samsung galaxy 3)phone, and it was a little different. The preview screen on both the windows machine and the iPad show the gibberish. The preview screen on the Android shows the original writing, but shows the gibberish when you click in to see the full note. Hope this helps.

That is definitely gibberish. I would suggest submitting a support ticket here: https://evernote.com/contact/support/ticket/

And then send along the ticket number to myself so I can check up on it. We'll likely want to grab a log. I would submit the issue as an "iPad" issue because it sounds like the issue began there, but also include where most of work was created--so whatever primary device (or Web) was used to gather the information for her book.

Sending a log from the get-go will help us immediately review for errors. I would try to pull a log from both the iPad and whatever other device you have that may have been the source (the point where the text changed to gibberish). Instructions to pull a log are below:
