Giving up on Evernote due to basic performance problems

Recommended Posts

I have been having miserable performance problems with Evernote for over a year and I'm about to give up on the product.

1) I observe these problems when using Evernote for the most basic note-taking tasks; E.g. note-taking that I can perform in Notepad++ while Evernote is is refusing to run acceptably.

2) I have been unsuccessful in researching solution(s) to these performance problems.

3) Is there any 'new' documentation on addressing Evernote performance problems?

4) Can anyone suggest a replacement for Evernote on Windows to be used, primarily, for very basic note creation and editing?  Can anyone suggest a forum (e.g. at Reddit) where such topics are discussed?

5) I am using Evernote on a not-powerful Windows 7 laptop but, using 'ProcessExplorer', I see that I have sufficient memory and CPU available to expect Evernote to run smoothly

6) Note a previous inquiry that I made into this problem: https://discussion.evernote.com/topic/115648-looking-for-evernote-documentation-diagnosing-and-fixing-evernote-performance-problems/?tab=comments#comment-514332

Hi.  This is not meant as some kind of defence rant for Evernote - there's ample reported evidence that some users appear to have crippling performance issues,  and in that case it makes sense to jump ship in favour of something that actually works.  As far as I can see though your previous inquiry was more about finding a helpful diagnostic tool than actually finding a specific cure,  though we did invite you to provide more information about the exact nature of your issues.

There are quite a few posts in the forums providing possible solutions to performance issues from simple reinstalling to firewall blocking and index rebuilding.  As a subscriber (if you still currently are) you'd also have access to support via https://help.evernote.com/hc/requests/new

If you are satisfied that there's nothing more for you here,  I'd suggest doing some web searches for note-taking software.  There are dozens of Evernote wannabe apps out there with more and less features,  and the app that works for one person may not be suitable for another.

Some former Evernote users swear by OneNote - others swear at it, because it transpires there are two different versions with different feature sets,  which (as I understand it) are not feature compatible - one won't show notes from the other.

After Evernote's notoriety for various real or imagined crises there are always a flood of posts about alternative apps - like https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/lightweight-onenote-evernote-alternatives/

More recently there's been this series - starting here: https://www.slashgear.com/evernote-open-source-alternatives-part-1-turtl-30551531/ and https://www.reddit.com/r/Evernote/comments/97sr77/evernote_replacement/

There's also more in the forums -

Depending on your specific use case you may find that one option stands out.  While I've had problems from time to time with Evernote,  I have (so far) always considered the cost to me of spending time auditioning other apps would far outweigh the benefit of working with Evernote to fix problems that I'm experiencing,  or give them enough technical detail to confirm that I am suffering from a device or OS - related quirk that they need to fix in a future release - and then gritting my teeth with work-arounds until they do fix it.

Best of luck with your search - please let us know if you do find a viable alternative.
