@Stuhrer I notified our engineering team for the Web client about the issue you're experiencing.

We noticed that you have an older version of Chrome from 2016. Can you please try updating your browser on Linux to the latest version (Chrome 78) and report back to let us know if you're still experiencing the issue?

OK, I‘ll try this on Monday but I am not sure whether I have the authority to change my system at work. I shall report back on Monday. Thank you and have a good weekend.

    @Stuhrer Thanks for reaching out!

Thanks for trying to find the reason for my problem!

It is related to my environment at work. I now tested it on Safari, Chrome, and Firefox on my Mac (actually I was surprised that Firefox now works with the new Web interface). In all three browsers it works but not in Chrome under Redhat Enterprise 7.5 at work as mentioned earlier. Unfortunately, at work I am relying on the Web interface due to the lack of a client for Linux.

The problem is not really related to search. The upgrade to the new search feature (which is awesome by the way) was just a coincidence. Something else must have been changed. When I use the new search e.g. using 'tag:.caas' which searches for all notes of a certain project I see the correct tag appearing in the search box. But when I press enter or click on the found tag I get the error message I described. The same happens when I click on such a tag in the tags window.

My workflow is really simple. I work for a number of different projects and I keep track of my work on these projects with Evernote. All notes for a project carry a special tag starting with a '.<project>'. Notes for issues which need to be worked on additionally carry the tag '.<project>-open'. This easily allows me to show all notes belonging to a project or all notes which need work. When I finish the work on a note/issue I just remove the tag '.<project>-open' and keep the tag '.<project>'.

But for the problem this is irrelevant. All tags starting with a special character result in the described problem. It would be a lot of work to change all the tag names to ones without special characters, and I am also reluctant to change it because I like this way organizing my notes.

I also tried switching languages used by my browser and by Evernote without success.

Can I provide additional information e.g. using Web developer tools of browsers etc.?

  3. Hi,

Thank you for the quick answer. The new search was just activated for me yesterday and the described problem just appeared with this update. And I now think it is not the search but the problem is related to the tags with special characters. I use a dot for project-related, '@' for location-related and '#' for people-related tags. When I now search for such a tag or select such a tag in the tags window I get an error message. I took three screen shots. The first shows that I am actually in the classic editor version so this doesn't help.

The next shows some of my tags starting with a dot. I tested all tags I use with three different special characters which are as mentioned above '.', '@', and '#'.

When I now click on such a tag I get the following error message:

When I then click on 'Reload Page' I see all notes and not only the ones carrying the selected tag.

My system is Redhat Enterprise 7.5 and Google Chrome 54.0.2840 (64-bit). My locale is en_US.UTF-8.

  4. Searching for notes with tags starting with special characters like #,@,. is completely broken. It is also not possible to go back to the non-beta version of the Web-Interface beause the new search is active for this version as well. The Web-Interface is now almost useless for me because it totally breaks my workflow.

  5. The Web Client was last updated more than a year ago. There were rumors that Evernote is working on a new client but it seems to me, nobody cares any more. I am still using it on a daily basis under Linux and I am still hating the work I need at home on my Mac to cope with the shortcomings of the interface and to turn my note into useable ones. Evernote please at least let us know whether there will be a new client for the Web which is more useful. While the number of my notes grows the risk of the need to switch to a different system is getting higher every day.

  6. When my notes get too long I split them up into several notes. Then I create a special note with links to all of these notes in a table of content. This can be done in an easy way by selecting the notes for the TOC. Each note gets a link back to the table of content at the top. In this way I can easily maneuver through these notes all belonging to a single topic. Sometimes I even use this in a more complex, nested way. The top TOC note links to Sub-TOC notes etc.

  7. OOOPS,

I have been working for quite some time with the new interface now and I never experienced the diplicate note issue except when I used multiple tabs. Today all of a sudden I have > 30 duplicate notes containing different states of my note I am currently working on. Luckily, the one last modified was the complete one.

I immediately moved away to the old version because it allows me to delete multiple notes. I will stay with the old and still much better version until something happens with the new interface.

And looking to the update schedule I am not very optimistic that this will be any time soon. Considering the recent development with Evernote I think I need to switch to another solution soon. I have a very bad feeling because at the moment nothing much is happening and not just with the Web version. What are they doing?

  8. Evernote is not "multi-user" safe. It is possible to edit the same note on two devices or on two browser windows at the same time but the result is that when a sync happens and the server identifies conflicting contents of the same note it is duplicated. A solution would be to introduce a locking mechanism that ensures that only one client/browser window is able to edit a note or a transaction mechanism like the ones used for databases.

Until such a solution is implemented you need some self-discipline. At least you don't lose content. In case a duplicate note is created you have to carefully inspect which one contains the content you need or you might event try to combine the content.

  9. When I started working with Evernote I used it with an organization I was used to before. The concept of tags was new to me and it took some time to digest. But after some time I started to appreciate it. It actually allows you to organize the information in a similar way as your brain works. Your brain does not put information into a hierarchical tree-like structure (notebooks and sub-notebooks). It keeps it in context and creates relations between information in a very complex way. With tags you can do the same. You can link a note to different contexts using tags. Today I am using just two stacks, one for work related notes one for private and less than 10 notebooks per stack but about 200 tags. And actually I could live with one notebook only and exchange e.g. the stacks 'work' and 'private' by two additional tags.

  10. I am trying to figure out where my Evernote Data lives so that I can back it up.

I have two macs. My main machine is an iMac. On that machine, onto which I have a Scansnap scanner attached, when I go to the following, there is only 1K of data: Users/Library/Application Support/Evernote.  This file does not exist on my 2nd mac. By the way, the only folder here is called "quick-note". There are no other folders!

On my other mac (MBA), which is my travel machine and not my main mac, the Evernote file contains 180MB and is the following location: users/library/containers/com.evernote.Evernote>  This mac is not attached to the scanner.

    Three questions:

    1) Where is my data on the iMac?

    2) Why is it different on my two macs?

    3) How do I back it up?  This is critical as I am considering storing important records, articles, and book drafts that I want to maintain for years.

    1) You can determine the location of the current installation by going to Evernote > About Evernote, then hold down OPTION (alt) key to reveal the DB location.

    2) Are you using the App Store version on one and the direct download version on the other? Due to special sandboxing requirements for App Store versions they use different database locations.

    3) Most important is to backup your local notebooks. The others are on the Evernote server and should be quite safe. To backup local notebooks export the notes as ENEX files. These can be imported later.

However, you will lose some information:

    a) The ENEX files contain no information about the notebook. You will have to create the notebook structure at import time again.

    B) Note links to other local notes will not work after import

  11. Thanks Stuhrer. Just curious - which important problems are you referring to?

Well, when I look to the problems and complaints reported in this forum there seem to be many. I also find and report bugs and I would like to have better editing possibilities for Mac, iOS and the Web client that I am using at work under Linux. And the '*****-storm' like discussions regarding the latest Penultimate and Mac updates will give the developers enough to work on for the coming weeks and months.

  12. Nobody is asking for a change in the default operation of the delete key - only for an option to require confirmation. Are people really arguing that Evernote should not offer that option?

And besides (not that this is relevant, but what the heck), hitting Delete-Enter is maybe a microsecond slower than just hitting Delete.

Well, usually I am sure that I want to delete a note and when I make a mistake I still can find the note in the trash. I don't need a confirmation when there is a trash. But an option to use a confirmation or not would be fine but I think we have many much more important problems to fix.
