I read it and ended up confused: EN will make sense out of meeting notes, that the note taker himself doesn't understand. WOW !

But maybe my translation app just fooled me  😇

It looks to me like AI note summarisation, as Notion or Mem have already. But could be wrong. I was hoping for more info what will be done in that article :)

I tried that and it does work. It’s a long story but I reached out to someone at OneNote and had a bad experience with it. Like condescending, if you don’t like it by a Windows machine or use a different browser type response. I wasn’t looking for them to rebuild the clipper. I know they dropped it because Apple changed things up but that particular person‘s response turned me off of OneNote and subsequently all Microsoft products. I refuse to use them now. If they have just been decent in their interaction, I would probably have it in my arsenal of tools but because of that one person I will never recommend or use their products to someone that doesn't use them already.

But then again, I'm the type of person that I rarely forgive, and I don't forget, especially with businesses that treat their customers that way.

I am not even going to get started on my current opinion of the whole situation with Evernote. I'm waiting to see where it goes and what bending spoons response is but it's not looking good.

I am still shocked by no Bednig spoons response or any kind of notification about all of this. Did they gave any hints to you "Evernote Experts" or any road direction where all of this is going?

So I give up. I have yet another response from Evernote restating my increase to USD180, and they have not answered any of my specific questions. I've spent enough time trying to get an answer from them that justifies this level of increase. So I will be cancelling the auto-renewal on my subscription and using alternatives.

The next comments are about what I will do instead, so if this is not of interest, thanks for reading this far!

I've moved away from Evernote as my daily note application since Roam Research was released, and I have since moved to Logseq, and I am now experimenting with Tana. I'm finding Tana an excellent place to capture information and make it searchable with its combination of bidirectional linking, transclusion and super-tags, a very useful combination.

Evernote is a very long way away from matching those features.

I use todoist for task management and Fantastical for calendar management. Fantastical is particularly good at handling multiple calendars, and todoist offers very powerful capabilities for managing my tasks. Yes, I pay extra for those, and the integration of tasks and calendars that Evernote is developing into one tool is of limited benefit to me, and it is a long way behind these specialist tools.

Evernote has become a document reference as none of the tools I've mentioned handle documents well. Over the years, I have loved Evernote's ability to find obscure documents because of its full-text indexing of file content, including the OCR of handwritten stuff. I have also used tags extensively as another way of finding documents.

I'm a little surprised at what I will use to replace this use case - Google Drive. I use Google as the basis for my "business" (it's just me), so I have access to the full range of corporate tools Google provides. As you would expect, the search is at least as good as Evernote, and I can find any content in a document, including handwritten images.

Over the past few days, I've started experimenting with Google's "labels" to replace the tags. My most common tags are for the organisation, person and project, so these structured ones seem to work well. I used to tag notes with subject notes, but I am finding I use Search to find notes related to subjects now, so I've largely stopped doing this.  And Google also seems to be pretty good at "fuzzy" searches, such as when I misspell something in my notes. For example, searching for "corproate" in Evernote returns only notes where the misspelling occurs. Google returns documents where both "corporate" or "corproate" appear.

And I can use these features without paying extra, now saving myself almost NZD300.

As long as Bending Spoons allows me to access the archive of notes that Evernote is becoming for me, I will continue using it. But I am saying goodbye to the elephant as part of my toolset with regret and sadness. It has been through a lot with me!

Offtopic, I plan to go in your direction, but with a combo: Bear ( quick notes, meeting notes, capture, next week should upgraded beta Bear 2 also come ) + Notion ( summarization, projects, different tables) + Todoist ( task manager ) + Googe Drive/Synology/Icloude - still to decide ( storage manager). Also playing a little with Mem, whom I find very interesting + has a nice send email functionality.

Was looking at Tana, but tbh looks confusing.

Anybody needs to know how much the service is worth.

One can indeed buy a lot of ToGos for 180 bucks ... although I still don't find anything even close to 180 for Professional officially. This are the prices for a yearly subscription (per month), picked from the official EN website in German a few minutes ago. I get the same prices, just without the Free option when I use my Personal account to log in, instead of a Free account credentials.

    I have now monthly: CleanShot2023-03-08at03_24_47.png.10721ba70c4a0a5c45ee5849e211f0c2.png

But if i go on plan change i have:

So actually my monthly price is different if i would update now, it would be 1 eur more than i am paying now.

So Evernote did get back to me, but I missed the original message. The TL;DR, the increase is real.

Evernote wants me to pay 80% more to access the same set of features that I currently have. And as you will see from my billing history below, when they removed the Annual Premium Plan, I had to upgrade to Professional to retain the premium features. At least I got true boolean searching. So solely due to Evernote's subscription plan changes, my cost to use Evernote has increased from USD70 two years ago to USD180 due this month—only a 250% increase in cost.

I have until the 17th to decide, but unless something changes, I have had enough of this approach to customers. The money is less of an issue in this case; after all we are only talking about 2-3 coffees (my currency of choice!) a month difference. It is more this significant increase with a very generic explanation to a long-term customer (and regular beta tester).

These comments are from the email that I sent to them:

"In addition to the increase in price, I am getting concerned about the lack of information you provide to your long-term users - and I include myself in that category. While there were things to criticise about the previous owners, they actively shared their work. I hope that the new owners change their current approach - the loyal following you have purchased deserve more than this desultory approach to communicating changes.

Unless you can provide me with a much more compelling proposition other than I get to keep using what I already have for 80% more, you have lost a long-time customer."

@PinkElephant And these are the facts as presented by Evernote. I wonder why some plans are changing so much now when others remain the same. I have asked why this is happening and if I get a response, I will share it here.

Here is the clarification from Evernote:

"Thank you for contacting Evernote Support. My name is Anna, and I'm happy to assist you today.
I understand that you received an email that your plan's price will be increasing to 180 USD per year. With this, you want us to justify beyond the generic text included in the email you received on why you should stick with your current plan despite the increase in its price. I appreciate you taking the time to reach out to us regarding this matter and send us a copy of your billing history in advance.

To begin with, allow me to clarify the history of your payments since 2021:

    • March 16, 2021 - You paid 69.99 USD for an Annual Premium plan. For context, we removed this plan in July 2021.

    • July 25, 2021 - You upgraded to Annual Professional, which is a different service level compared to the plan you purchased last March 16. Since this upgrade was made while your Annual Premium plan was ongoing, you got prorated credits (deduction on the plans' actual rates) for both of the subscription plans.

    • March 17, 2022 - Your Annual Professional plan renewed at its regular rate in the amount of 99.99 USD.

With regard to your main concern: I may not be able to provide a more detailed context regarding the specific improvements that we're currently working on since I don't have access to the app's roadmap. Rest assured that the increase in price is for the overall improvement of the application on all of our clients (mobile, desktop, and www.evernote.com) in order to serve all of our valued customers better."

So, just to understand this clearly :) they want that you pay 180 USD per year vs 99,99 that you paid until now?

The layoff announcements continue on LinkedIn. Heavily skewed to software developers, QA, and other product people over the last couple of days. They include Geoff Barry, whom I don't know, but whose posts announcing a new desktop release I always read religiously.

Some people on Blind (an anonymous app for Tech people to chat about the industry) are claiming that the three rounds of layoffs total 50% or more of EN staff. I don't know whether that's true or whether that's exaggerated, but clearly the cuts run deep. There continue to be no open positions posted on the EN website, so it's not just a question of Bending Spoons wanting to trim certain skills and hire in others.

I'm beginning to get concerned that the primary focus on BS will be on monetizing their acquisition, not on improving the product. And that makes me sad.

Unfortunately this layoffs are normal thing in M&A. Specially if BS team will take over much more  on their people, which is normal. Sorry for Geoff Barry to be layed off as he was on all new update posts :). But, again, no communcation what is happening, or road map. Not a good sign for me and i dont like it. Just my 5 cents.

Ever been in such a situation ?

You have a multi layered dilemma here: Internal measures, in BOTH companies, the financial side (worse if you are publicly listed), your company network of suppliers (due for a shakeout as well), the customers.

If you have a few customers, it is simpler, you talk to them directly, confidentially. But with an atomized customer base like here ? Not communicating publicly for a while may be the best out of several bad options.

In times where the first LinkedIn profiles go on „searching“ while the employee information is still going on timing is plain impossible.

Anybody can interpret not being communicated at himself. For me they can spare me the snake oil vendors blahblah.

I would go for a nice roadmap instead …

I was in similar situation, but "my" company was acquiring other one. General misunderstanding guys from other company had was that we were the same, we were not, we were same on paper but as we actually bought them  layoffs were mainly on their side and our people just reorganised their positions or took positions from them. This is now happening in EN, and this is normal process. But, this doesent mean that there was no communication to customers and internal staff, there was, and there was lot of it.

But yeah, i would go for very nice roadmap as you said . Show us something, show us direction, plan, idea, whatever. Just say something :)

We have some people here who want more communication.

How so: Sending mails to the customers, telling that next week the marketing department will be handed the last paycheck ? Probably before anybody talked to these fellows in person ? Come on guys, don't be naive.

The running system is more robust than depending on a few marketing guys, or devs. Otherwise Twitter would have tweeted the last Tweet months ago. Same here.

It is not "more communication" but any communication whatsoever. I dont expect that they announce to us layoffs or internal company plans, BUT, direction of the company, first few steps, video message ( hey it is 2023 ), any nice message from BS site or social networks, anything. Until now, we had one Ian Small goodbay letter + very bare new CEO letter with cachy popular frase "i am evernote user". So yeah, some structured communication would be nice, just to stop people of thinking what will happen next. And there was enough time to do that. This is communication failure by the book.

THanks Gazumped.  I don't think it's the device because when I got home I noticed the same problem there ie: I can see the little green icon next to gmail but clicking it does nothing other than take me down the same path.  I will hopefully receive an email from EN tech support.  I assume this has something to do with Google account or maybe Gmail account.

Have the same issue, just checked. Was deauthorized and when authorizing got same message as you, Google script error.

  10. It looks i have this issue. Internal links were normally working, and now they stopped.

Format is as usual: file:///path but it is not opening file anymore.

    Anybody have same issue?

UPDATE: It started to work after i confirmed with a mark in popup "always allow opening internal links".

Maybe this popup in EN needs to be checked before this works.

On Windows desktop you can do two down arrows and then hit enter. "Everywhere" is then selected and the cursor returns to the search box.

Alternatively go to "Notes" first (alt+ctrl+2) and then open search (alt+ctrl+F). As you are not in a notebook you are automatically searching everywhere.

Thnx. Arrow down moves on Mac OS also to Everywhere. That is that. Would never thought, i was looking for tab :)
