Adding the words "In my opinion" somewhere in this post would make it more useful. Everybody thinks what they see is happening to everyone else. Based on my experience, they added multiple features and made it faster, and Evernote does what I need to do pretty well. Not perfectly; anyone who finds a perfect choice for every use case should by all means post the information.
In my opinion, Evernote is a poor choice unless you've already inextricably entwined your life with it (as I have). They have no support to speak of, and I've never seen a comment from anyone who actually works for Evernote in these forums. They do not care. At all.

Have you actually asked for support on any of these issues, or even posted here?
If you can ask polite questions rather than ranting about how things aren't as good as they used to be, we'll try be positive and helpful...
Yes, both. Multiple times.
Have you ever received support in less than two months? I haven't. And then it's never actually helpful. Posting here is the only place where I ever receive helpful answers, which are usually along the lines of "Yup, you're right, that doesn't work anymore."
I would be less inclined to make negative posts if anyone at Evernote even began to pretend to care about us users. Meanwhile, I reserve my right to ***** and moan about a product that has done nothing but go downhill in every respect. It's a shame that EN has left loyal EN users like yourself to be its support desk. I would much rather complain to them directly but, as I my have mentioned, they don't care AT ALL.

I've been living in fear of this for months now. I looked all over for alternatives, but the effort required to switch is more than the effort required to put up with the terrible "improvements" they've made to EN.
I would advise either finding an alternative now, or putting up with the new version in spite of its crappiness. I don't trust the new EN owners to let us know well enough in advance of Legacy's demise.
As long as you're OK with less features, slow response time, no support, and an outrageous price hike, I don't see that there's anything to complain about... 🙂 -

I'm deeply offended by your sudden, capricious price change and new restrictions on my account. You took your product from useful to absurd, and I'll be joining the tens of thousands searching alternatives. I doubt a moderator will approve this, but please pass along to the greedy new management team: goodbye you greedy *****. It will be a real joy to not use your product in the future. I loved and recommended Evernote to everyone. Now I'm excited about deleting it from all my devices.
A small price hike, a slight reduction in file limits - that would be fine. But this sudden greed grab making your little side app cost more than Microsoft office for a year? You just aren't worth it. There are great alternatives, and you will help them grow - the last good thing you do for anyone.
And not only did they hike the price, they removed multiple features and made it slower. And there's no support to speak of anymore. I spent quite a while looking around for an alternative, but I just couldn't find anything that wouldn't take a lot more effort than just adjusting to the crappy new EN release. But I heartily recommend finding an alternative if you can, as EN is obviously a terrible choice unless you absolutely can't do otherwise.

I actually thought that clicking on a link in a note opened as a separate window did open the linked note in that window. I'm positive that it did that very recently, so the new, very stupid behavior of opening it in the main window must have been introduced in some update. There is a way to click on a link in a note opened in a separate window and get the linked note to open in another separate window: use Ctrl (probably Cmd on a Mac) when clicking. The main window will still stupidly open, but the linked note will open in a foregrounded separate window.
Thanks for that. It's at least better than what I was doing before!

MacBook Pro Monterey 12.7.3 EN 10.73.3
I have EN loaded on my Windows desktop at home, but don't use that functionality on that computer. Will try it to see if this may be a Mac-centric issue...

I've finally upgraded to v10 out of fear that Legacy will stop working. Still don't understand why it was decided it'd be a good idea to REMOVE features for the new version (and make it slower), but hey, what do I know.
In Legacy, if I had a note open as a window with (application) links to other notes, clicking on a link would open the linked note in that window. Alternatively, I could right click and choose to either open as a tab in the same window, or open the note in its own window.
In v10, clicking on a link within a note seems to return to the home screen with the linked note open in preview (which doesn't always work on the first click, and is then slow to load). Right clicking only offers the "open" option, which does the same thing as clicking on the link. This is putting a serious damper on my workflow. I don't see any settings to change this behavior. Just wanted to be sure I wasn't missing something...?

I'll second that emotion.

@kkarney No company needs to put everything into a new generation product as into the predecessor. Streamlining and cutting away bloat is easier when you start all over anyhow. If you don’t like it, switch to another product.
Legacy was deprecated the moment v10 released, in October 2020. From that moment the deprecated client got a grey instead of a green icon. The version count was only upped in the last digit, because there was nothing new.
Deprecated doesn’t mean it will stop working. But it means no more bug fixes, no support, no new features.
Technically the clock counted ticking with the introduction of RTE sync in May 2023. Since then it is a permanent technical burden to supply data to a legacy data structure. That was as well the moment when legacy users received a warning in their clients that can no longer be ignored.
The first is 3 years from now, the second half a year. How many more calls for action are needed ? My answer: None. Just set a date, and pull the plug. Data access is secured by using a v10 client. Mimimi by the last legacy holdouts is assured anyhow, no matter when.
So maybe be happy that it’s not my decision to take.
Yes, I'm extremely happy that it's not your decision to make. Your life seems to be dedicated to criticizing anyone who criticizes Evernote. I didn't come here for an argument, I was hoping to get some suggestions of alternate products -- e.g., your so diplomatically stated "If you don’t like it, switch to another product." And I'm sorry if I didn't use the exactly correct terminology -- I meant to ask when syncing to Legacy will be deprecated.
It does seem to me, however, that a company who charges for their product should offer support for it even if it's only to tell the end user that they will be SOL at a specific time. But i can't even get that common courtesy out of Evernote.

3 things to keep in mind:
1) Nothing was removed. Everything that is there in v10 was added - 100% new code, no carry over. If something is not there, it was either seen as not necessary or too hard to reproduce, or both.
2) Nobody ever promised a legacy clone, just build with newer technology. There is no "one legacy", because the old clients were never integrated, and each one had properties that another lacked (just as example: Tabs only on legacy Mac, Import folders only on legacy Windows). What all legacy clients have in common is a massive technological debt, which lead to a practical stalemate in the years before v10 launched. These were the old days, but they were not good at all.
3) There is a new client generation called v10, and it exists out of its own right, not because it is so nicely mimicking legacy. Nobody should expect to find exactly THAT twist he relied on for years in the new version. Often the twist will be there, but different, or in another place, but maybe the twist is missing, and that's it.
Anybody on legacy now had 3 years after the old clients were deprecated to orient himself, make market research and decide about what to do. What will happen is not that the last legacy user can turn the switch - the switch will be turned no matter if there are still some users holding out. Anybody can decide whether he will finally wants to bring a candle to find the way out.
#1 & 2) I don't care. I'm a paying customer. I have a specific way I use EN, and if you made that go away, I have every right to be upset. 3) Actually, I think it's perfectly reasonable to think that any new version of software, even if it's brand new built from the ground up, should include all of the useful features of the old version, not the removal of same.
Now, if someone had said -- "we're deprecating Legacy on XX/XX/XXXX" that would have been helpful, and I might have started looking for an alternative sooner. But as it is, who knows when that will be? Nobody at EN, apparently. -

In asking the next question I don't want to seem aggressive. Just asking who did you ask? If your questions came to these forums then your fellow users probably can't give an answer. We just don't know.
The answer I've seen to the end of Legacy question is 'we have not made any definite plans to end Legacy'. In practice there is a big effort underway to get Legacy users to switch. I hear on the grapevine that 80% of those who were using Legacy have switched to v10. So at some point the remaining 20% will prove to be intransigent and the end will be announced. For now you'll only get the we have no plans yet answer.
As to why tag sorting wasn't built into v10 I think there will never, now, be an answer. The people who made that decision and didn't choose to build it in have left. They didn't remove tag sorting. In building v10 from the ground up they just didn't include it. The current owners have inherited the product at the state of development when the purchase was completed so will have no answer to 'why'. Perhaps it will be added in some future UI/UX update. That won't help your current dilemma.
To get an answer from Evernote then, of course, you'll need to engage with the overwhelmed support team.
And in answering the question, I don't want to seem like a jerk, but yes, I have asked EN directly. Their overwhelmed support team has not bothered to reply to several recent emails, and I've asked the question of them before as well. No definitive answers to anything. I'm sorry, but if your support team is overwhelmed you either need to a) hire some more staff; b) improve your product so that it doesn't require so much support; or c) both of the above.

I think the announcements over the past three years about Legacy being replaced and the more recent big red flashes across some accounts about outdated software might be some form of clue?
You'll find lots of comprehensive listings online in sites like https://noteapps.info or https://toolfinder.co
And yes, I'm another hold-out that converted about 18 months ago. After a rocky start I actually got used to the new layout.
Oh, I've seen the announcements. But any time I ask "Why was tag sorting removed?" or "When will Legacy stop working?" I get nothing (other than a lot of folks telling me to suck it up and make the switch). I just really don't understand why those two questions are so hard to answer with actual answers. It's bad support, plain and simple.
-
I just want to be able to sort by tag. That's all I want. Nobody will explain why this feature was taken away nor why it cannot be reinstated.
And I will admit, I am partially motivated to switch by my disappointment in EN's support (or total lack thereof). I would like to find a product developed by folks who actually give a s**t about end users. I used to think EN did. It is now quite evident that they do not. -
Since Evernote Legacy appears to be going away, and since nobody at Evernote will either give any firm info on that or express any concern over those of us who are reliant on its features, I would like to find an alternative. I do need something that works both with Windows and MacOS.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

It's unfortunate that nobody at Evernote will actually address the question of when the Legacy version is going to stop syncing.
It's also unfortunate that they removed features that so many of us use every day. Yes, I know there ore other ways of doing things, but I had a method that I used for over a decade, and then it was taken away for NO APPARENT REASON, and that's very, very annoying.
If I got the feeling that anyone at EN cared about this, that would help. But they obviously don't.

Evernote really doesn't care about this. They won't even give us an explanation for why it was removed. I keep getting a notice that I *must* upgrade from Legacy. I'm very nervous that it will just stop working (e.g. syncing) some day soon. Asking for help seems to do no good.
-
My entire life is based around being able to sort tags. I don't understand why that feature was taken away. I can't upgrade without a complete overhaul to my modus operandi. That is not something I have time for. And now I'm being told that the legacy version is going away. Why? Why? WHY??

This (7.14.1) was the last tolerable release of Evernote. It doesn't work with my new MacBook. This company rivals Microsoft for making gratuitous changes that nobody needs whilst simultaneously removing features that many of use every day. Why??
-
Well, i can't get the Legacy version to install on my new MacBook, so I'm stuck with the lame current version. Why do you remove features when you go to a new version?? Sort by tag is a necessary part of organizing my day - EVERY DAY. Now I can't do that... It's not as if I can switch to a new app to replace Evernote -- I'm in too deep. But it seems like every new version removes something I use daily. It's extremely annoying..

Seriously, why would you take the top list view away without warning us pre-upgrade?? Now i have to figure out how to re-install a legacy version. Thanks for wasting a lot of my precious time.

Thanks!!

Opened my first ticket on this on March 19... Then another on April 11... Nothing.
I wouldn't complain if I wasn't paying for this service, but I am. It's starting to get annoying, as I depend on this plugin, and forwarding just isn't the same.

Evernote replacement suggestions AND how to transfer 10 years worth of data
in Evernote General Discussions
Posted
Shhh. Don't say anything negative. You will be chastised.
Speaking for myself, I think the new version is terrible (slow and missing features I used to rely on). There is no support whatsoever (except the defensive kind offered by customers in these forums).
But I'm sticking w/ Evernote. Why? Because, like you, I have more than 10 years of my life inextricably bound to EN, and the effort to switch to something new is just too much. There are ways to transfer data to a new app (I was able to do this with Notion, for instance), but I found that adapting my workflow to a new app was simply more of a PITA than giving up and staying w/ EN.
My greatest fear is that the total radio silence from EN support means that it's not long for this world. I just hope they give us a chance to get things together before they close up shop and disappear completely.
