Carl has some very specific points to his use case, which might not apply to everyone. In my experience, v. 10 finds notes with PDFs containing text I've searched for in the main search bar. To find the text in the PDFs within those notes, if the PDFs are more than a page or two, I go to a note, make its PDF(s) viewable as single or all pages, not just title (my default view), and then use the search function within the note. The search term will be highlighted in the PDF.

I'd suggest trying it out for yourself using the Web client, which will be the latest version of v. 10 (https://www.evernote.com/client/web). Search for text you know is in a PDF in a particular note, and see if the note is found, etc.

To be clear, every other instance of text in the PDF document is found.

It is only this one line with the part number string that does not get picked up in v10 as in was in v6.

It has something to do with the formatting within the PDF document which apparently is somewhat obscure and created by some kind of auto script by my corporate resources.

I mostly use EN with the SideList view mode, thereby having 3 vertical sections across screen. Left - the EN menu, centre the found Notes, and right a view of the note I've selected.  I can usually tell from the Title of the note which note I'm looking for but as Dave discusses, I can click in the note view and then CTRL F to search for a word if it is something particular.  I usually can find work related stuff quite quickly but my personal interest stuff.... ugh!  It's why I have notebooks set up to hold notes on the specific interests.

Just wondering is the text being highlighted when its text in a PDF or image in a PDF... either or both?

I can't speak to what happens with images in a PDF that is dropped into an EN note.  Have not tested this nor is it common in my workflow to have an image in a PDF that gets dropped into an EN note.

When I search, using a modified string where the problematic prefix is removed,  and my TEST note created just today is one of several notes found, it is the modified string in the body of the PDF that is highlighted

That modified string is also highlighted wherever it is found in my older notes, both in the PDF body and the bare text I copy & paste into the EN note after the PDF is dropped in.

I don't recall in the past, last  checked several months ago, that the text in the body of the PDF was highlighted.  I think this is new.  Previous in v10 it would have been only the text I added that was highlighted.

The reason I went thru and edited ~2000 notes to copy & paste from the Acrobat view of the PDF was to obtain the part number string.  When I had this problem way back when, I was not able to find notes using any part of the part number using v10 search.   Did I test at the time dropping just the prefix?  I can't recall for sure.  I'm positive I would have tried searching the NNNNNNN portion of the part numbers as that is unique to a custom product being built for clients.

Has this issue been resolved yet Carl?  I am worried, since we are losing legacy....

    @Meandering muse  No and Yes.

Since my last posting I went through 1700+ PDF's I had dropped into a separate note for each, and:

    • opened each one into Adobe Acrobat,
    • selected the portion of the PDF that was not getting picked up by Evernote which was essentially all of the middle portion of the PDF
    • pasting as text these contents into the same note as the PDF.

I've also been doing this for all similar PDF's newly created  since I identified the issue.

Just a reminder, this was a bonafide issue that I submitted to Evernote Support that they acknowledged with a support ticket.

I not familiar with the coding internal to a PDF document but something in the PDF's, created by the company I work for,  was not being picked up when Evernote assimilated the document.

These were all quote and/or order acknowledgements with part numbers.  There would be multiple line items in the body of the PDF.  The ability to track part numbers was what I wanted.  The line in the PDF with the  part number was not being picked up.

    i.e.

Upper body of PDF had client info, ship to address, terms, etc and my company's logo and info, all of which gets scanned and picked up.

A graphics strip spanning width of page to separate above and main body below.

    1  AAA-NNNNNNN-NNNNA    <<< Part number
A cryptic description of the item is in this line.
        More description.
        Sometimes a s 3rd line with info.

2  AAA-NNNNNNN-NNNNA    <<< next part number in order
A cryptic description of the item is in this line.
        More description.
        Sometimes a s 3rd line with info.

3 AAA-NNNNNNN-NNNNA    <<< next part number in order

and on and on for as many items as in order, sometimes spanning 3 pages.

A graphics strip spanning width of page to separate body above from a summary statement

It was the information in the line with the "1 AAA-NNNNNNN-NNNNA" that was not getting picked up.

@Meandering muse seeing your inquiry today I went back a couple of years and found a PDF that had never been dropped in a note and created  a new note for it. This was a bare PDF in an EN note, I did NOT add in the body pasted as text.

I allowed a minute for Evernote to assimilate it.

Using the Windows app, I then clicked on Notes in the left hand menu and in the Search field above it pasted in the completer AAA-NNNNNNN-NNNNA part number.

The new note was NOT found.

But... I had already stumbled over this a few weeks ago, the "-" hyphen in the part number can cause problems in search.  I then brought up all notes again and in the search field pasted only  "NNNNNNN-NNNNA" removing the "AAA-" prefix.

Now the new note is found per the part number in the body of the dropped in PDF.

Similarly, another line of products have part numbers per this format  AAA-NNNN.

Again, searching on the "AAA-NNNN" will not find the new note.  But If I remove the "AAA-" and search only on the last "NNNN" it will.

I'm not sure why the alphabetic prefix in the part number is preventing it from being found.  I did try quotation marks around the entire part number i.e. "AAA-NNNNNNN-NNNNA" but that did not help.

But now, versus many months ago, I can search on the last portion of the part numbers and find those PDF's.  Its' possible this was the case when I originally obtained my support ticket but I think at the time I would have tried this variation.   In any case, by copying and pasting as text, I can find the entire string.

A couple of noted items with the migration to the new version.

    1. With the old v6 system, if I dropped the PDF into a note and then went to open the note in Acrobat using mouse over PDF right click "Open", sometimes the old system would refuse to open the PDF.  I would do this in order to copy and paste the part numbers as text.  It happened routinely and I had a work around for it but it was wasted time.  Now with v10, it has been 100% reliable. Two thumbs up!! 👍👍
    2. When you search in ALL Notes, and it brings up multiple responses in search results, it allows you to sort these by  the Updated and Created columns. NOT by Location or Title columns.  Two Thumbs Down !!!  Booo Hisss!  👎👎
    3. I preferred the older v6 search system where you brought up a notebook and it would only search in that notebook versus now having to use the "Stack" prefix but using "Stack" is a functional solution though a few more mouse swipes and clicks.

I've had to make small adjustments in my daily work flow with v10 but overall I find it more reliable in ensuring my notes are in my phone when I'm in the field.  I have not seen a that old issue with duplicate notes from an un-synced edit in a long long time.

I've made an interesting finding that resolved the issue for me on Windows 10. Hopefully it can help others too.

Evernote appears to get date format settings from the Windows display language, not the Regional format

I had my region set to English (United Kingdom) and all other apps seem to obey this, but Evernote was returning dates in US format. Based on long-standing frustration I figured this was just Evernote being rubbish.  Then I saw Mike P's post with screenshots of UK formatted dates -- so it has to be possible to change this.

Digging deeper I found that although my `Regional format` was set to United Kingdom, my `Windows display language` was set to English (United States). Changing them all to UK has resolved the problem.

Shift-Alt-D shortcut now returns dates as dd MMMM YYYY

re: "Changing them all to UK"

I tried this hoping it would natively invoke the ISO 8601 YYYY-MM-DD  format.   It did not.

Annoyingly, it did change the keys on my keyboard.  Ex:  Shift Top Row number 3  keys in the UK £  symbol instead of the North American #.  Shift apostrophe '  to key in a quote mark "  ....  keys in the @ symbol.

I've reverted back as it was driving me bonkers.   Sticking with my AutoHotKey script for now.

Hi.  Thanks for the background,  but if you would like to see this fixed,  you (and everyone else affected) should report the issue to Support.

This is usually the point at which everyone groans and points out how slow the process is,  but the choices are:  don't report it and hope that Support will maybe decide to do something about this - if even they are actually aware that some users find it a problem:

Or report it yourself and give Evernote some direct feedback about why you find this an issue.  Evernote can ask questions if they need to,  and can ask you for a copy of your device log to see exactly what's happening when things go wrong.

I had thought it had been reported.  Can't find the other thread this was discussed in atm.  My comments were to enlighten the OP about the ongoing EN behavior and the work around and to confirm the quit/restart method as a short term work around for their issue.

  6. Currently on my laptop

I had noted last week after an EN Windows app update that once again when I double click on a note to open it in its' own window that it would only open on my #2 monitor and this is when the main EN window is NOT in full screen mode but only a partial screen.  For several versions having EN in a partial window (less than full screen) would open the note window on the same monitor as the main EN window.  So this was a surprise but I was still able to drag the window back to my laptop screen from monitor #2.

Reading this thread today, I tested it again and sure enough it was still happening.  I was surprised because I thought I had closed Evernote on Friday for the weekend using the menu File\ "Quit Evernote" option.

So I immediately quit EN using that method and now when I start EN the partial window technique is working again to have a note window open on the same monitor.

However, I think this is a behavior EN needs to fix.

  7. 🙁  As I have posted here before, I support the demand to have   yyyy-mm-dd   supported inherent to Evernote as a date format.  I don't support Pink Elephant's position on the issue.

It is just easier to use yyyy-mm-dd to sort information from most recent to oldest especially with files with the Windows File Manager.

  8. I've been cleaning up hundreds of notes that have a PDF dropped in them in my paid Evernote.

This has been occurring over two or more versions of Windows Evernote app with the current version being:

    10.63.4-win-ddl-public (20231006121931)
    Editor: v176.13.0
    Service: v1.75.5

I click on "Notes" and then set a Filter using "Located in Notebook" for a specific notebook that has these notes with PDF's in them.

Once my "Located" filter is set, I type into the Search field my text characters.  I've tested this using different phrases and get the same result.

This  search, using the "Located in Notebook" filter, results in ALL notes in the notebook being found.  Which is NOT correct.

    But....

If I open my Notebooks stack in the sidebar and select the specific notebook I want to search and then key in my text characters, the search engine correctly finds a handful of notes with those text characters.

This has to be a bug with the "Located in Notebook" filter, correct?

  9. @Mennis  OP - can you "DUPLICATE" the note and then work on the copy?

Yesterday I experienced an issue with a note where during the creation of the note I saw a delay after I either dropped in a PDF or I applied some formatting to text shortly after.  It was not long but notable - the screen paused for ~2 seconds.

I went away from this new note to work on other notes and when I came back to copy in some text, I was not able to edit.  It was as if I was locked out of the new note.  This is on my main device for note creation - a laptop running Windows 10.

This morning I was still not able to edit that note.  I then shifted over to a Windows 10 desktop and was able to open and edit this note.  I didn't make any changes, simply confirmed I could see the cursor pulsing in the note.

Shifting back to the laptop I was still not able to edit it.

I then tried something that has worked for me in the past - I Duplicated the note.  The Duplication option is found when you select the note and right mouse button click.

I was then able to edit the new copy and deleted the original.

I'm using the Windows app on the laptop and the desktop devices.  The laptop Evernote app was updated a couple of days ago so I've been watching for any glitches in its' behavior.  Never tried the browser version to resolve this issue.

  10. I updated my Evernote on my laptop by using the manual download from Evernote's download page and signing in.  Unfortunately it seems to have wiped away the Legacy v6 copy I was trying to retain due it has some PDF search functionality that V10 has not fixed as yet.

The laptop version now shows as "win-ddl" and I was able to move the database to a location where it will be automatically backed up.

Also a relief to have fixed the "permissions" issue in v10.60.5   v10.59.5  with this new v10.60.4.

From what I've read its a Windows store restriction. I think they run apps under different security levels. If you install from the direct download you get the feature.

Wow!  *facepalm* this is a clusterF***

I'm not sure how to ensure I get a direct download.

I typically look under the Help menu and "Check for Updates"

I have seldom gone into the Windows Store and tried to update there.

So, I have no idea why my Laptop is from the Windows Store and my Desktop is from "DDL".

After the latest update today, my current Evenote, version 10.59.5-win-ddl-public (5236)

    Tools/ Settings/ Preferences/ Application

    scroll down to bottom.

I'm getting that dang low space warning.

Further to this post, I was able to move the local database on my office DESKTOP but when I went to do so on my laptop, the option was not there.

I checked the version information and they almost identical, with one small difference.

DESKTOP (has option to move to other location)

"ddl" I presume stands for Direct Down Load from Evernote.

That this option does not show on my laptop leaves me scratching my head.  Any ideas what is going on with this?

    (10.59.5   is whacked.  Waiting for 10.60 )   🤔

  13. I'm sitting here watching the back & forth and pondering how this is going to affect offline note performance on my phone and on my laptop.

I guess I need to find one of my dead zones or simply turn off WiFi and Cell data and see what happens looking up information.

My sole reason for going with Evernote back in 2013 was offline look-up of information stored locally in my phone or on my laptop.

And those friggin reminders on my laptop to migrate from legacy to v10 when I already have v10 installed.   Can Evernote coders not work out a  piece of code that detects that v10 is running along v6?  Not confidence inspiring!

  14. @Boot17  Thanks!    Will watch for this.

Doesn't seem to happen on all notes though or maybe it does it is so quick that it is not noticeable.  It might be a predictive function as I work my way through a date sorted list of notes so that by the time I get to the next note, it has already been "converted".

I've been going through several hundred notes to add in info that v10 does not enumerate (per a PDF bug) and I can say that most of these notes have not been viewed from before the RTE singularity (yeah.... all the latest features in EN are like a SciFi movie to me now). 😉

    .

  15. Been using  Windows v10 for a solid 2 or 3 weeks since the new Sync feature was added.  I'm forcing myself to leave v6 unused.

There are a few oddball issues with v10 - one of them is that it will seem to freeze for a fairly long period of time - maybe 30 to 60 seconds - as if it is checking back with the main EN servers and my data connections was not available.  It does not do this often but often enough that it has become a thing - one time I was on a client call and trying to confirm some info.

    What is this lag?

Oh NVM..... I think it is the issue per this thread....  when I try to view a note I think I can still see the Title but all the body text is not viewable while frozen, just a blank area.
