If you have the installer, you can always reinstall. But you need to do it NOW, because you need to be logged in to access your data.

First sync legacy, then quit the app and make a copy of the EN database folder. Rename it (like putting an .OLD at the end).

Then install v10. Follow the instructions.

After you have v10 running, log in, check that it works and is syncing your notes. Leave it open for a little to allow the initial download, then quit it again.

Now install legacy using the installer. Open, log in. You can wait until it has downloaded a fresh copy. It is important you stay logged in ! Even when closing it, never ever log out.

After the database is recreated (the copy you made before could serve as a backup), you use the Firewall to cut the legacy client off from the server.

Set up a Firewall rule that blocks all server traffic. From now on the Firewall must always be running before you open the legacy client.

Personally I think it is close to useless. But it should work this way

Why do you have to reinstall legacy if you already have it installed and running? All you've done is move the database location.

  2. I have, much to my great disgust, finally downloaded new Evernote to my laptop (Windows) - I have had it on my ipad for a while. I'm not happy about it. I've had very poor luck with it on my iPad, frequently finding myself unable to pull up notes in searches that I know are there.and that come up readily when I search on my Android version (not updated). This is, right now, my major complaint (apart from the GUI, which has way too much wasted space for my taste), as I haven't had a chance to test it thoroughly - that I don't trust the search/indexing. Also, the instantaneous sync has not been so instantaneous for me, and I often feel the need for a sync button that isn't there.

Anyway, I have been using Evernote for at least 15 years and have over 12,000 notes, and none of the alternatives fit my usage patterns well, so I'm going to find a way to adapt. I'm currently running the new version concurrently with a version that doesn't seem to be truly Legacy (no gray icon), but is an older version (9091).

The one issue that has me extremely concerned and confused is backups. I've read everything I can find on these forums and am so unhappy about the fact that the notes don't reside on my local machine, as they did before, which gave me constant almost-real-time backup of my notes as long as I had multiple daily incremental backups of my machine.  But now that's no longer the case,-so I have to find another backup solution, and it seems like the options are limited.

I saw on a recent post that Backupery is retiring its Evernote product and will no longer support or update it. So it seems like that leaves Evernote-Backup as the only option (as I'm not counting the built-in Evernote options) - is that correct?  Can someone explain exactly what evernote-backup backs up, beyond the note contents/titles/attachments? Does it also back up note meta-info, like tags, dates created & updated, source URLs for clipped web pages, etc.? And by some miracle does it preserve internal links?  Does it back up all the note version info or just the current version of the note?

I'm not sure any of this matters, since it appears to be the only option, but I still would like to know, and also just to confirm that I'm right that the notes aren't stored on the local machine anymore and so can't be backed up that way.

    Thanks!

I made the 2024 monthly calendar template myself from the 2023 version, with Monday being the first day of the week.

This one looks like the old ones, which I like because of how I use the little banners where the day numbers are, but I can't seem to access it - says shared link is invalid.

I can tell you two reasons why this is wrong - it's not every thread,  just quite a lot;  and while @PinkElephant can be a tad.. direct.. in his views,  he's not often wrong.  Oh - and personal attacks are not permitted in the Forums.  Everyone has an opinion,  but let's keep it polite please?

I actually feel that pink elephant's responses border on personal attacks many times, they are just couched as  reasonable and logical, in the way that gaslighting is. But they have the effect of calling the OP ridiculous or idiotic for their complaints. I find it very frustrating that it's never reined in.

Regardless, in this particular case, their response makes no sense to me - I would go so far as to say that it's wrong. I don't really care about that in the end though - what I care about, though not really all that much in the scope of things I care about regarding Evernote, is being able to use a text shortcut when searching.

Specifically, in my case I had used it for Intitle, which, because of how I organize notes, is my most frrquently used search parameter. Others of course might use text shortcuts in other ways when searching, to improve the efficiency and speed of their workflow.

Actually you have your opinion, and I have mine. But of course your opinion is so much better ....

Know what: Ask support. Given their current reaction time you will have ample time to calm down your nerves and go to a quiet mood before they answer. And they get paid to be nice, which may work to your advantage.

I'm perfectly calm. It's just odd that I come to these forums once every 5 months or so, and in **every** **single** thread, you are coming up with the most elaborate and circuitous reasoning for why people's perfectly valid and reasonable issues and criticism and complaints are wrong. It's like you're an Evernote developer apologist. I love Evernote and rely on it for everything, but there are legitimate reasons for people to complain and be unhappy. Failure to recognize an operating system's text replacement, for example. Which apparently is in fact a "known issue," not a developer choice because of some special precision required for Evernote search, or whatever.

There is a simple reason - text replacement happens all the time, and it can go against what I search as much as it can go in favor.

So I think it is not allowed intentionally in the search field - search terms have to be precisely typed to bring up the right notes.

Why?  Why?!  Very annoying indeed  in my case brings up nothing - as hollow as the statement itself.

This makes absolutely no sense at all. Do you spend all your time on these forums just to be contrary and argue with every single criticism and comment that people make, because that is what it seems sometimes. Obviously, if someone has specifically and explicitly chosen and created a specific text replacement on their iOS device, then that is what they want, whether they are searching or doing any other task on their iOS device. By using the text replacement, I *am* "precisely typing" my search term. I am just doing it using a code that I myself chose for that term. It's not like Evernote  search is  some critical security issue that respecting text replacement might compromise or something.

Furthermore, text replacement on certain Android keyboards works perfectly fine in the Evernote search box.

Therefore I still have no understanding of or satisfactory explanation for this bizarre behavior. Why the heck can't I use my text shortcut for "intitle"?!

  7. I just got a new iPad and made the switch to v.10. I had managed not to updated the app on my old iPad, but now with the new one I’ve been forced to update to the new one. I’m a longtime Evernote user - probably close to 15 years.

So far it’s not as bad as I feared, but there’s one odd issue. I have a number of text replacement rules set in the General/keyboard settings of the ipad to speed up searching in Evernote - eg, “itl” is replaced with  “intitle:”, along with a number of other similar rules for search terms I use frequently. This worked well in the old versions of Evernote. But in v.10+,  the general iOS text replacement rules do not operate in the search bar. They work fine in the body of notes, but if I type any of my text replacement shortcuts in the search bar, nothing happens - there’s no replacement.

Has anyone experienced this? Is there some reason for this seemingly inexplicable behavior or is it a bug? It’s a fairly small issue but I’m finding it so annoying!

  8. Wow, yes, you sure are correct, I somehow completely missed this enormous thing that happened and have kept right along using what I guess was the last v. 6.xxx (Windows), since I never got a notice to update and...while I thought I subscribed to the blog or list or something, I guess I must not. I feel a little dumb for not having looked into it further before posting, but thank you for politely alerting me! My very brief review does not make excited about this update, but I will read more and decide what to do. I still use a very old (pre-2018) version of Evernote on my desktop, because I prefer it in many ways (for one thing, I don't get the margin problem when using the web clipper) even though it has some annoying bugs, but I've kept my laptop up to date - maybe not anymore though.

    Thanks again!

  9. I try to keep track of Evernote updates but sometimes miss things. I've been using the 2-step shuffle, which I discovered on my own, for ages, but it's an incredible pain, and today I decided to google for solutions to the incredibly annoying wide-margin problem (which I experience when I clip  articles in Simplified format from either Firefox or Chrome). I found this thread, but nothing since last January. Has anything ever come of this proposed fix?
