But everytime my computer starts, I get the following error:"Could not add tray icon, error: The operation completed successfully." Any ideas?? I do see in Google search results that people faced this problem in 2010 in version 4.x. Has there been any fix found yet??I'm using version 5.8 Thanks & regards. Link to comment
Level 5* gazumped 11,666 Posted January 4, 2015 Level 5* Share Posted January 4, 2015 You seem to be reinstalling Evernote every time the computer loads - check that your startup link is to the application executable, not the install package. Other than that, if your Evernote is running satisfactorily and you don't have a tray icon - will you miss it? If not, don't worry about it. If you will miss it, consider uninstalling, restarting and reinstalling Evernote - but research what you have to do to achieve that first; mistakes can cost you data... Link to comment

There are two startup entries related to Evernote, both in the Startup folder (instead of the usual Windows registry entries)."EvernoteClipper" with the Command "D:\Evernote\Evernote\EVERNO~2.exe" "EvernoteTray" with the Command "D:\Evernote\Evernote\EVE53E~1.exe"Following the clue that these are nothing but shortcuts that Evernote created in my Startup folder, I went to my Startup folder only to find that the path those shortcuts point to are perfectly in alignment. So, EvernoteClipper shortcut points to "D:\Evernote\Evernote\EvernoteClipper.exe" and the EvernoteTray shortcut points to "D:\Evernote\Evernote\EvernoteTray.exe". Both these paths are correct and the respective executables are there in "D:\Evernote\Evernote\" folder. I even did File->Exit in Evernote and ran these executables through the Start->Run route and they run perfectly. Then I did a little experiment whereby I unchecked the EvernoteTray startup item in msconfig, leaving the EvernoteClipper item checked, and restarted my machine to see if that resolved the problem and it did! Upon restart, no errors, nothing! So I think it is safe to arrive at the conclusion that EvernoteTray is the culprit in my case. What is intriguing is that when I ran EvernoteTray command ,i.e. "D:\Evernote\Evernote\EvernoteTray.exe", via the Start->Run route, it ran perfectly. You 2 cents on the issue @gazump?? Are there any services that EvernoteTray relies upon that might not have started when EvernoteTray startup item is executed? Link to comment
Level 5* gazumped 11,666 Posted January 5, 2015 Level 5* Share Posted January 5, 2015 AFAIK Evernote Tray is exactly what it says on the can - a shortcut icon that lives in your tray. The only services it should rely on are purely Evernote. Full marks for the logical testing - since you were missing a tray icon in the first place, clearly that's what was not starting properly. Just to close the loop on this - how about following the link back to Tray.exe and right-click / "send to desktop" to create a shortcut. Put that shortcut in your startup folder and see if that one works OK... ? Link to comment

Then sent a shortcut of the EvernoteTray.exe to my desktop. Then Cut-Pasted the newly created shortcut into my Startup folder, replacing the default(Evernote created) EvernoteTray shortcut.Then I restarted the machine. But again the same error message when my Windows starts..."Could not add tray icon, error: The operation completed successfully." Also, I went through the EventViewer logs but seems like Evernote doesn't record this error there either! Link to comment

EvernoteUser-EU 4 Posted January 6, 2015 Author Share Posted January 6, 2015 Regarding installing Evernote to C:\, I can't really commit that because my C drive's got only 1.5 GB space left which I am not sure I should consume further, lest it affect my system performance. But I've a good news too....because your suggestion to install Evernote forced me to explore that possibility, I realised that 1.5 GB is clearly not sufficient for my Windows. So, I unistalled my Adobe Creative Suite 2. Then to see what Evernote puts in its own Activity Log, I restarted my machine so as to generate a fresh activity log. Voila! No error this time! And I can see Evernote Tray Icon and its associated reminder notifications! Does this imply Adobe CS2 was the culprit? Link to comment

I went through the activity log this time and the results aren't very encouraging. The finding is that Evernote starts logging in its Activity Log only when it actually starts. But since in my case, it isn't able to start at Windows logon, it doesn't log anything in the Activity Logs then. So my Activity Log starts when I manually started Evernote from the 'Start Menu'. This I confirmed from the Event Viewer. enotesb43 3 Posted July 14, 2015 Share Posted July 14, 2015 This has just started happening to me following a recent update which allegedly fixed the annoying repeated popup asking me to go premium. The update did indeed stop the popup appearing every time I clicked in Evernote but it has messed up the tray icon. Searching the web I found this thread and others going back to 2010! Looks like Evernote regularly messes up this tray icon. I'm not sure what benefits the tray icon has so I'll live without it for now in the hope that it gets fixed in a later update. Its yet another reason I'm reluctant to go premium - along with the major differences between the desktop & mobile UI. Link to comment

Another solution that I'm using these days is to upgrade my windows from WindowsXP to Windows-7. I haven't faced this issue on WIndows-7 and I've updated my evernote atleast twice while being on Windows-7. Having said that, I have also bookmarked your link for future reference...just in case evernote is jynxed again!! Link to comment
